SPACE: the SPectroscopic, All-Sky Cosmic Explorer

We describe the scientific motivations, the mission concept and the instrumentation of SPACE, a class-M mission proposed for concept study at the first call of the ESA Cosmic-Vision 2015-2025 planning cycle. SPACE aims at producing the largest three-dimensional evolutionary map of the Universe over the past 10 billion years by taking near-IR spectra and measuring redshifts of more than half a billion galaxies at 0 < z < 2 down to AB approximately 23 over 37r sr of the sky. In addition, SPACE will also target a smaller sky field, performing a deep spectroscopic survey of millions of galaxies to AB approximately 26 and at 2 < z < l0+. Owing to the depth, redshift range, volume coverage and quality of its spectra, SPACE will reveal with unique sensitivity most of the fundamental cosmological signatures, including the power spectrum of density fluctuations and its turnover, the baryonic acoustic oscillations imprinted when matter and radiation decoupled, the distance-luminosity relation of cosmological supernovae, the evolution of the cosmic expansion rate, the growth rate of cosmic large-scale structure, the large scale distribution of galaxies. The datasets from the SPACE mission will represent a long lasting legacy that will be data mined for many years to come.

A red envelope around a dominant elliptical galaxy in an X-ray selected poor cluster

A photometric and spectroscopic study of the optical counterpart of the X-ray source 1E 1111.9-3754 has revealed a poor cluster of galaxies dominated by a very luminous giant elliptical. Three-color surface photometry of this galaxy shows that the elliptical body is surrounded by a large envelope with colors redder than the galaxy. The formation of this system in a high velocity dispersion poor cluster is briefly discussed.

X-ray and optical observations of X-ray-selected BL Laceratae objects

Results from several X-ray and optical observations of five X-ray-selected BL Lacertae objects are reported. X-ray light curves covering periods of up to 6 yr reveal that the X-ray flux from these objects does not show large-amplitude trends over this time scale. Variations of up to 2 mag have been observed in the optical. The soft X-ray spectra of three objects have been measured with the Exosat Medium Energy detectors. Energy spectral indices range between one and two. In one case (1E 1415.6 + 2557), evidence for photoelectric absorption in excess of that due to the local interstellar medium has been found. A new optical flare from 1E 1402.3 + 0416, with rise and decay time of order of a few weeks, has been detected.
