The ion-ion acoustic instability

This paper considers the linear theory of ion-acoustic-like instabilities in a homogeneous Vlasov plasma with two ion components, a less dense beam and a more dense core, with a relative drift velocity. Numerical solutions of the full electrostatic dispersion equation are presented, and the properties of the ion-ion acoustic instability are studied in detail. At relatively cold beam temperatures, the instability is fluid-like, but it becomes a beam resonant kinetic instability as the beam temperature becomes of the order of the core temperature; if the mode is unstable, its threshold lies well below the threshold of the electron-ion acoustic instability. An electron temperature anisotropy enhances the instability, and at sufficiently large beam-core relative drift speeds, electron magnetization can either detract from or enhance the instability.

Electromagnetic ion beam instabilities - Growth at cyclotron harmonic wave numbers

The linear theory of electromagnetic ion beam instabilities for arbitrary angles of propagation is studied, with an emphasis on the conditions necessary to generate unstable modes at low harmonics of the ion cyclotron resonance condition. The present results extend the analysis of Smith et al. (1985). That paper considered only the plasma parameters at a time during which harmonic wave modes were observed in the earth's foreshock. The parameters of that paper are used as the basis of parametric variations here to establish the range of beam properties which may give rise to observable harmonic spectra. It is shown that the growth rates of both left-hand and right-hand cyclotron harmonic instabilities are enhanced by an increase in the beam temperature anisotropy and/or the beam speed. Decreases in the beam density and/or the core-ion beta reduce the overall growth of the cyclotron harmonic instabilities but favor the growth of these modes over the growth of the nonresonant instability and thereby enhance the observability of the harmonics.

Plasma instabilities in the terrestrial magnetosphere - A review of recent theoretical research

This paper reviews recent theoretical research on plasma instabilities in the terrestrial magnetosphere. This paper is organized with respect to particle free energies: electron-ion currents, electron beams, ion beams, electron anisotropies and ion anisotropies are successively considered. For each free energy, the associated instability properties are summarized, and their applications to magnetospheric physics are briefly described. Theory and simulations which have established close correlations with observations are emphasized.

Electrostatic beam instabilities in a positive/negative ion plasma

This paper examines the linear theory of electrostatic waves and instabilities in an unmagnetized, homogeneous Vlasov plasma. The first configuration considered is that of a stable plasma with three Maxwellian components: electrons, positive ions, and negative ions. The dispersion properties of the lightly damped ion modes are studied as a function of relative electron density and relative component temperatures. The second configuration considered is that of a tenuous electron-ion beam with drift speed streaming through a negative/positive ion plasma. If the beam is very tenuous, an electron beam instability is excited; if the beam is more dense, the instability becomes Buneman-like with parabolic dispersion. The thresholds and maximum growth rates of these instabilities are described as functions of the beam density and drift speed.

Linearly polarized magnetic fluctuations at comet Giacobini-Zinner

The fully electromagnetic linear Vlasov dispersion equation for instabilities in a homogeneous, magnetized plasma is solved. Parameters appropriate to conditions observed during the ICE encounter with comet Giacobini-Zinner are used to study the polarization of electromagnetic instabilities driven by the relative streaming of two ion components. If the ion/ion relative drift is near the Alfven speed, the associated long-wavelength modes may be approximately linearly polarized at relatively small angles of propagation with respect to the magnetic field. The relatively inhomogeneous plasma background of the comet may impose such oblique propagation, so that this result provides an alternate explanation to the observations of linearly polarized waves near the comet.

The development of shell-like distributions from newborn cometary ions

One-dimensional hybrid computer simulations that are spatially homogeneous are used to investigate the evolution of newborn cometary ions that interact self-consistently with the solar wind. Cometary ions injected at a constant rate are scattered by the growing electromagnetic fluctuations resulting from the associated free energy, and the scattering at relatively low fluctuating field amplitudes leads to shell-like velocity distributions which subtend about 4 pi in solid angle but which have small spread in speed. Shell-like distributions are found to occur when the ion injection rate is relatively slow, when the injected ion mass is relatively light, and when the energy density of the fluctuating magnetic fields exhibits linear growth.
