Origin of Dark Material on VESTA from DAWN FC Data: Remnant Carbonaceous Chondrite Impators

NASA's Dawn spacecraft entered orbit around asteroid (4) Vesta in July 2011 for a yearlong mapping orbit. The surface of Vesta as imaged by the Dawn Framing Camera (FC) revealed a surface that is unlike any asteroid we have visited so far with a spacecraft. Albedo and color variations on Vesta are the most diverse in the asteroid belt with a majority of these linked to distinct compositional units on the asteroid s surface. FC discovered dark material on Vesta. These low albedo surface features were first observed during Rotational Characterization 3 phase at a resolution of approx. 487 m/pixel. Here we explore the composition and possible meteoritical analogs for the dark material on Vesta.

The Impact History of Vesta: New Views from the Dawn Mission

The Dawn mission has completed its Survey and High-Altitude Mapping Orbit (HAMO) phases at Vesta, resulting in 60-70 meter per pixel imaging, high-resolution image-derived topography, and visual and infrared spectral data covering up to approx.50 degrees north latitude (the north pole was in shadow during these mission phases). These data have provided unprecedented views of the south polar impact structure first detected in HST imaging [1], now named Rheasilvia, and in addition hint at the existence of a population of ancient basins. Smaller craters are seen at all stages from fresh to highly-eroded, with some exposing atypically bright or dark material. The morphology of some craters has been strongly influenced by regional slope. Detailed studies of crater morphology are underway. We have begun making crater counts to constrain the relative ages of different regions of the surface, and are working towards developing an absolute cratering chronology for Vesta's surface.

Synthetic environments for simulated missions

Synthetic environments offer Space Flight projects an opportunity to perform rapid, comprehensive, and rigorous modeling of the critical elements of a mission in order to compute quantitative measures of design performance, associated risk, and actual mission utility value.

Estimating the Mass of Asteroid 433 Eros During the Near Spacecraft Flyby

The terminal navigation of the Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft during its flyby of asteroid 433 Eros on December 23, 1998 involved coordinated efforts to determine the heliocentric orbits of the spacecraft and Eros and then to determine the relative trajectory of the spacecraft with respect ot Eros.
