Characterization of selected LDEF-exposed polymeric films

The characterization of selected experimental and commercially available thin polymeric films which received 10 months of exposure to the LEO environment on the Long Duration Exposure Facility is reported. The visual appearance of most specimens changed due to exposure. However, except for a silicon-containing copolymer film, chemical characterization including infrared, thermal, and X-ray photoelectron analyses showed that the molecular structure of the surviving material had not changed significantly in response to exposure. Surface texturing due to atomic oxygen erosion was documented using various microscopic analyses. The possibility of continued post-exposure degradation of some polymeric materials is proposed.

LaRC-RP41: A Tough, High-Performance Composite Matrix

New polymer exhibits increased toughness and resistance to microcracking. Cross-linking PMR-15 and linear LaRC-TPI combined to provide sequential semi-2-IPN designated as LaRC-RP41. Synthesized from PMR-15 imide prepolymer undergoing cross-linking in immediate presence of LaRC-TPI polyamic acid, also undergoing simultaneous imidization and linear chain extension. Potentially high-temperature matrix resin, adhesive, and molding resin. Applications include automobiles, electronics, aircraft, and aerospace structures.

Synthesis and characterization of polyamide-imides

The synthesis and characterization of polyamide-imides (PAI) derived from four different dianhydrides and three isomers of diaminobenzanilide are discussed with emphasis on the effect of combining an amide linkage in the diamine portion with other bridging groups in the dianhydride portion of the polymer backbone. It is noted that all of the amide-imide polymers exhibit high-glass transition temperatures, high thermooxidative stability, and a relatively good solvent resistance. These aromatic PAIs are characterized by high thermal stability due to chain stiffness, crystallinity, and intermolecular hydrogen bonding, and are considered to be good candidates as high-temperature films, coatings, and fibers for aerospace applications.

A study of thermal transitions in a new semicrystalline thermoplastic polyimide

A polyimide derive from 4,4'-isophthaloyl diphthalic anhydride (IDPA) and 1,3-bis (4-aminophenoxy 4'-benzoyl) benzene (1,3-BABB) having semicrystalline behavior was prepared and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Thus a poly(amic acid) film cured in air for one hour each at 100 and 200 C displayed an endotherm at 286 C, followed by a crystallization exotherm at 317 C, and a second melting transition at 350 C. The 286 C melting point appeared to result from earlier solvent-induced crystallization. Films cast from DMAc, air dried, and soaked in methylene chloride could not be induced into semicrystallinity. The fully cured polyimide has a Tg of 216 C. Films heated to temperatures as high as 100 C for one hour in air were transparent and light yellow in color. Those films heated to or above 125 C were translucent. Polarized light microscopy revealed the presence of spherulites 608 micrometers in diameter in a sample cured to 275 C in air. Two film samples, one cured to 275 and the other to 325 C, were evaluated for tensile and ultimate strength, modulus, and percent elongation at 25 and 200 C. These values remained essentially constant at each test temperature.
