Ka-band Phase Measurement System for SWOT Mission

The KaRIn (Ka-band radar interferometer) instrument for SWOT (surface water ocean topography) mission faces unique challenges in terms of phase stability and group delay stability requirements to achieve centimeter level accuracy for height measurements. Conventional altimetry assumes nadir point return and measures a single range. SWOT will require additional angle of arrival information to provide swath coverage. Errors in differential phase and common group delay can both act as primary sources of systematic errors in determining the height using interferometric data. The ground support equipment (GSE) necessary for the performance requirements verification gets a fraction of the error allocation from the instrument. A phase measurement system capable of measuring millidegrees and working with pulsed excitation is developed and the preliminary results are described in this paper.

A W-Band Spatial Power-Combining Amplifier using GaN MMICs

In this paper, we describe a miniature powercombiner for monolithic millimetre-wave integrated circuit (MMIC) chips using spatial power-combining with cavity modes. We have designed GaN MMIC power amplifier chips for 94 GHz, and illustrate the concept of the W-Band Spatial Power Combining Amplifier (WSPCA). Using 1 Watt, 94 GHz MMIC chips in a two-way cavity mode combiner, we were able to achieve 2 Watts of output power with 9 dB gain and 15 % PAE. This technique could be extended to high power MMICs and larger numbers of chips to achieve higher output power in a compact size. The applications include earth science radar, but may be extended to other applications requiring wider bandwidth.

Cryogenic Low Noise MMIC Amplifiers for U-Band (40-60 GHz)

In this work, we describe monolithic millimeter-wave integrated circuit (MMIC) Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) and mixer designs for U-Band, also known as the WR19 waveguide band (40-60 GHz). The LNAs were fabricated in NGC’s 35 nm InP HEMT MMIC process. The MMICs were packaged in WR19 waveguide housings and tested for noise, both at room temperature and cryogenically. We present the results, including a comparison to the state-of-the-art, and discuss applications for amplifiers in this frequency range. To date, these are the first cryogenic 35 nm InP MMIC results covering the 40-60 GHz range. We achieved a noise temperature less than 30 K over the 40-60 GHz range, when the amplifiers were cryogenically cooled. These results are comparable with other results in the literature, and we believe are the lowest reported for MMICs in the 50-60 GHz range.

A 75-116-Ghz LNA with 23-K Noise Temperature at 108 Ghz

In this paper we present the design and measurement results, both on-wafer and in package, of an ultra-low-noise and wideband monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) amplifier in the frequency range of 75 to 116 GHz. The three-stage amplifier packaged in a WR10 waveguide housing and fabricated using a 35-nm InP HEMT technology achieves a record noise temperature of 23 K at 108 GHz when cryogenically cooled to 27 K. The measured gain is 22 to 27 dB for frequency range of 75 to 116 GHz. Furthermore, the amplifier utilizes four finger devices with total gate width of 60 um resulting for improved linearity.
