Track Level Compensation Look-up Table Improves Antenna Pointing Precision

The pointing accuracy of the NASA Deep Space Network antennas is significantly impacted by the unevenness of the antenna azimuth track. The track unevenness causes repeatable antenna rotations, and repeatable pointing errors. The paper presents the improvement of the pointing accuracy of the antennas by implementing the track-level-compensation look-up table. The table consists of three axis rotations of the alidade as a function of the azimuth position. The paper presents the development of the table, based on the measurements of the inclinometer tilts, processing the measurement data, and determination of the three-axis alidade rotations from the tilt data. It also presents the determination of the elevation and cross-elevation errors of the antenna as a function of the alidade rotations. The pointing accuracy of the antenna with and without a table was measured using various radio beam pointing techniques. The pointing error decreased when the table was used, from 1.5 mdeg to 1.2 mdeg in elevation, and from 20.4 mdeg to 2.2 mdeg in cross-elevation.

Command Preprocessor for Radiotelescopes and Microwave Antennas

The LQG controllers, designed for the NASA Deep Space Network antennas have small tracking errors and are resistant to wind disturbances. However, during antenna slewing, they induce limit cycling caused by the violation of the antenna rate and acceleration limits. This problem can be avoided by introduction of a command that does not exceed the limits. The command preprocessor presented in this paper generates a command that is equal to the original command if the latter does not exceed the limits, and varies with the maximal (or minimal) allowable rate and acceleration if the limits are met or exceeded. It is comparatively simple since it requires only knowledge of the command at the current and the previous time instants, while other known preprocessors require knowledge of the terminal state and the acquisition time. Thus, the presented preprocessor is more suitable for implementation. In this article analysis of the preprocessor is presented. Also the performances of the preprocessor itself, and of the antenna with the preprocessor is illustrated with typical antenna commands.

Radiotelescope Low Rate Tracking Using Dither

Radiotelescope access to a certain part of the sky requires very low tracking rate in azimuth. The improvement of the low-rate tracking pointing throught the dither implementation is discussed in this paper

Balanced Placement Of Vibration Sensors And Actuators

Mathematical approach that involves Hankel singular values leads to method for estimation of optimal placement of relatively few vibration sensors and actuators in multivariable flexible structure. Approach extends and complements previous developments regarding approximate decomposition, to Hankel singular values, of singular values of controllability and observability grammian matrices of multivariable flexible structure. Mathematical constructs also described in "Designing An Approximately Balanced LQG Compensator" (NPO-19000).

Sequential Design Of Rotation Control Of Flexible Structure

Improved procedure devised for designing and adjusting linear quadratic control system for somewhat flexible rotating structure like large radio antenna, large telescope, or robot arm. Basic purpose is making structure track desired rotation (for example, to rotate at specified rate to track celestial object or to slew to new observing direction) and suppressing vibrations, excited by wind or other external phenomena or by changes in angle and angular-velocity commands. Linear quadratic controllers for rotation tracking and suppressing vibrations designed separately.

Balanced LQG Compensator for Flexible Structures

The analysis of open-loop balanced flexible structures has been extended for closed-loop structures. The relationships between weights/ variances and characteristic values for the system as well as between weights/variances and plant/estimator pole location are derived in this paper. Thus, the weights can be determined in advance to meet the requirements of a closed-loop system.

Model reduction for systems with integrators

The reduction algorithm for systems with integrators is derived. The algorithm is based on balancing the antigrammians and has the same computational effectiveness as the regular balancing procedure. It was applied to the reduction of the NASA Deep Space Network antenna model. As a result, the 90-state model has been reduced to a 27-state model, which preserves the full-model properties.

Sequential design of a linear quadratic controller for the deep space network antennas

A linear quadratic controller design procedure is proposed for the NASA/JPL Deep Space Network antennas. The procedure is developed for an antenna model divided into tracking and flexible subsystems. Controllers for the flexible and tracking parts are designed separately by adjusting the performance index weights. The effect of weights on system performance is a crucial property, and is analytically described in this paper. The procedure is illustrated with the control system design for the DSS 13 antenna.

Balanced systems and structures - Reduction, assignment, and perturbations

New results on properties of balanced linear systems and structures are presented. Balanced representation is defined for systems with poles at an imaginary axis or at the origin. Grammians do not exist in this case, but antigrammians are introduced which make balanced reduction possible. System grammians of specified properties are obtained by assigning the sensor and actuator configuration. The latter is determined using input-output assignment procedures introduced for general systems and specified to structures. A system is said to be uniformly balanced if all its Hankel singular values are equal.

Model reduction for flexible structures

Several conditions for a near-optimal reduction of general dynamic systems are presented focusing on the reduction in balanced and modal coordinates. It is shown that model and balanced reductions give very different results for the flexible structure with closely-spaced natural frequencies. In general, balanced reduction is found to give better results. A robust model reduction technique was developed to study the sensitivity of modeling error to variations in the damping of a structure. New concepts of grammians defined over a finite time and/or a frequency interval are proposed including computational procedures for evaluating them. Application of the model reduction technique to these grammians is considered to lead to a near-optimal reduced model which closely reproduces the full system output in the time and/or frequency interval.

Model reduction for flexible space structures

This paper presents the conditions under which modal truncation yields a near-optimal reduced-order model for a flexible structure. Next, a robust model reduction technique to cope with the damping uncertainties typical of flexible space structure is developed. Finally, a flexible truss and the COFS-1 structure are used to give realistic applications for the model reduction techniques studied in the paper.

Model reduction for flexible structures - Test data approach

A reduced model of a system is obtained by truncating part of its state variables. Hankel singular values and component costs determine which component is deleted or retained in the reduced model. In this paper Hankel singular values and component costs of a flexible structure are obtained from the resonance test data, rather than from the system matrices. Test data, besides system dynamics, include also actuators and sensors dynamics. For this reason, the reduced model obtained from test data can be far from the optimal one. In this paper the reconstruction of the flexible structure indices from the joint actuator-sensor-flexible structure indices is discussed.
