Osiris-Rex Shape Model Performance During the Navigation Campaign

The Navigation Campaign of the OSIRIS-REx mission began when the first image of Bennu was recorded by the PolyCam high-resolution imager on Au-gust 17, 2018. In the ensuing months, two teams began building shape models based on imagery taken during the Approach and Preliminary survey phases to be used for the transition to landmark navigation in the Orbital A phase. The orbit determination team began analyzing and characterizing the performance and errors associated with each shape model delivery working closely to iterate on the next shape model delivery. By the end of Orbital A, shape models produced by the Altimetry Working Group and JPL exceeded pre-launch performance re-quirements. This paper provides a summary of the analysis performed during operations.

Multi-Arc Filtering During the Navigation Campaign of the OSIRIS-REx Mission

The Navigation Campaign of the OSIRIS-REx mission consisted of three phases: Approach, Preliminary Survey and Orbital-A. These phases were designed to optimize the initial characterization of Bennu's mass, shape and spin-state to support a safe orbit insertion and a quick transition to landmark-based optical navigation tracking. The standard orbit determination filtering techniques used to navigate the spacecraft were unable to fit data from these three phases simultaneously due to numerical issues associated with the nonlinear dynamics and the long arc length. Consequently, a multi-arc filtering algorithm was implemented in order to combine the information from each of these arcs. Multi-arc solutions for Bennu's spin state and gravity field are presented here.

OSIRIS-REx Orbit Determination Performance During the Navigation Campaign

The OSIRIS-REx mission Navigation Campaign consists of three sub-phases: Approach,Preliminary Survey, and Orbital A. Approach was designed for initial characterization ofBennu while matching Bennu's heliocentric velocity. Preliminary Survey provided the firstspacecraft-based estimate of Bennu's mass. This phase consisted of five target flybys witha close approach distance of about 7 km. Orbital A was a two-month phase devoted to theNavigation Team learning the close proximity operations dynamics and environment aroundBennu and transitioning from center-finding optical navigation to landmark feature-basednavigation. This paper provides a detailed summary of the orbit determination performancethroughout the Navigation Campaign.
