A Portable 3D FFT Package for Distributed-Memory Parallel Architectures

A parallel algorithm for 3D FFTs is implemented as a series of local 1D FFTs combined with data transposes. This allows the use of vendor supplied (often fully optimized) sequential 1D FFTs. The FFTs are carried out in-place by using an in-place data transpose across the processors.

Parallel Climate Data Assimilation PSAS Package Achieves 18 GFLOPs on 512-Node Intel Paragon

Several algorithms were added to the Physical-space Statistical Analysis System (PSAS) from Goddard, which assimilates observational weather data by correcting for different levels of uncertainty about the data and different locations for mobile observation platforms. The new algorithms and use of the 512-node Intel Paragon allowed a hundred-fold decrease in processing time.

Image-Enhancement Aid For The Partially Sighted

Digital filtering enhances ability to read and to recognize objects. Possible to construct portable vision aid by combining miniature video equipment to observe scene and display images with very-large-scale integrated circuits to implement real-time digital image-data processing. Afflicted observer views scene through magnifier to shift spatial frequencies downward and thereby improves perceived image. However, less magnification needed, larger the scene observed. Thus, one measure of effectiveness of new system is amount of magnification required with and without it. In series of tests, found 27 to 70 percent more magnification needed for afflicted observers to recognize unfiltered words than to recognize filtered words.

Mars rover local navigation and hazard avoidance

A Mars rover sample return mission has been proposed for the late 1990's. Due to the long speed-of-light delays between earth and Mars, some autonomy on the rover is highly desirable. JPL has been conducting research in two possible modes of rover operation, Computer-Aided Remote Driving and Semiautonomous Navigation. A recently-completed research program used a half-scale testbed vehicle to explore several of the concepts in semiautonomous navigation. A new, full-scale vehicle with all computational and power resources on-board will be used in the coming year to demonstrate relatively fast semiautonomous navigation. The computational and power requirements for Mars rover local navigation and hazard avoidance are discussed.

The sensing and perception subsystem of the NASA research telerobot

A useful space telerobot for on-orbit assembly, maintenance, and repair tasks must have a sensing and perception subsystem which can provide the locations, orientations, and velocities of all relevant objects in the work environment. This function must be accomplished with sufficient speed and accuracy to permit effective grappling and manipulation. Appropriate symbolic names must be attached to each object for use by higher-level planning algorithms. Sensor data and inferences must be presented to the remote human operator in a way that is both comprehensible in ensuring safe autonomous operation and useful for direct teleoperation. Research at JPL toward these objectives is described.

Picture-Element Comparator

Proposed circuit, called "neighborhood comparison operator," compares data from neighboring picture elements (pixels) to find peaks, ridges, and valleys in picture data. Circuit also able to expand or shrink pixel regions. Circuit concept developed for image-processing computers. Circuit handles data stream of 12-bit pixels rather than conventional 8 or 16 bits. Consist entirely of standard logic chips.

Programable Pipelined-Image Processor

Computer serves as pipelined processor for imagery or other two-dimensional digital data. Processor does feature extraction, smoothing, edge detection, texture measurement, and stereoscoptic area correlation. Also plans routes for obstacle avoidance by robots and solves two-dimensional partial differential equations. Image processor consists of modular units: each includes set of computing elements of types particularly useful in pipelined-image processing. Flexible interconnection scheme used to route data to subsequent stages of pipeline.

Function Generator for Image Processor

Basic elements of function generator are memory chips and interpolator chip, which incorporates multipliers and adders. Memory includes CMOS static random-access devices. 120 ns cycle time of devices allows real-time processing of image data.

Neighborhood comparison operator

Digital values in a moving window are compared by an operator having nine comparators connected to line buffers for receiving a succession of central pixels together with eight neighborhood pixels. A single bit of program control determines whether the neighborhood pixels are to be compared with the central pixel or a threshold value. The central pixel is always compared with the threshold. The omparator output plus 2 bits indicating odd-even pixel/line information about the central pixel addresses a lookup table to provide 14 bits of information, including 2 bits which control a selector to pass either the central pixel value, the other 12 bits of table information, or the bit-wise logical OR of all nine pixels through circuit that implements a very wide OR gate.

PIFEX: An advanced programmable pipelined-image processor

PIFEX is a pipelined-image processor being built in the JPL Robotics Lab. It will operate on digitized raster-scanned images (at 60 frames per second for images up to about 300 by 400 and at lesser rates for larger images), performing a variety of operations simultaneously under program control. It thus is a powerful, flexible tool for image processing and low-level computer vision. It also has applications in other two-dimensional problems such as route planning for obstacle avoidance and the numerical solution of two-dimensional partial differential equations (although its low numerical precision limits its use in the latter field). The concept and design of PIFEX are described herein, and some examples of its use are given.
