Improving Multifunctional Sorbent Technology for Carbon Dioxide Adsorption

The MultiSORB system aims to improve life support on the ISS and other craft such as the Orion capsule via new technologies that enable more efficient CO2 adsorption. This means that life support systems can function with less power and greater reliability while still processing nominal quantities of CO2. The technologies explored in this poster include the use of zeolite paste in the creation of novel geometries, along with the use of state of the art heating/cooling systems such as titanium heat pipes.

Bench Scale Heat Pipe and Vapor Chamber Testing for Space Applications

NASA’s space missions demand better and more efficient carbon dioxide removal systems. wo challenges present themselves in improving the state of the art pellet adsorption beds: power minimization and uniform heating for carbon dioxide desorption. Titanium heat pipes and vapor chambers were found to be excellent candidates in solving these problems because of their passive heating nature, tolerance to high temperatures, and capability of direct implementation into these adsorbent beds. This research work compares these different titanium heat pipes (HPs) and vapor chambers (VPs).

Redesign of Carbon Dioxide Removal System for Multifunctional Sorbent Bed Testing

Carbon dioxide removal is a key function of Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) on the International Space System (ISS). Currently, this system uses pellet beds however they have known issues such as flow channeling and uneven heating. The Multifunction Sorbent (MultiSorb) project is developing 3D-printed zeolite beds with embedded heaters to address these issues. This poster lays out the steps in modifying the Carbon Dioxide Removal and Compression System (CRCS) to test the MultiSorb beds.
