New constraint on the Np 237 ( n , γ ) Np 238 integral cross section using the Godiva-IV critical assembly

Accurate knowledge of the 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np cross section at fast neutron energies is important for applied nuclear science. The presently available experimental data has large disagreements in the fast neutron region. Perform a model-independent measurement of the 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np integral cross section using a well characterized fast neutron source and compare the result with previous measurements and current nuclear data evaluations. Provide an integral measurement that can be used as a benchmark for current evaluations. Multiple samples of 237 Np were irradiated in the Godiva-IV critical assembly. Following the irradiation, the samples placed in a γ-ray counting setup and the γ-rays emitted from the decay of 238 Np were measured over a time period of approximately 7 days. Multiple γ-ray decay branches of 238 Np were observed. The observed activity of 238 Np was used to calculate the amount of 238 Np produced during the irradiation via the 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np reaction and an integral cross section of 342(11) mb was measured for the Godiva-IV neutron spectrum. Further, the 238 Np half-life has been measured with a result of 50.31(5) hours. The 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np integral cross section measured in this work is in agreement with overlapping 1σ error bands to ENDF/B-VIII.0. However, the measured value is 3σ away from the calculated integral cross section using JENDL-5. This measurement offers a reliable benchmark for future 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np cross section evaluations.

Half-life of Ge 71 and the gallium anomaly

Recent discussions about the origin of the so-called gallium anomaly have motivated a remeasurement of the half-life of 71 Ge. Here, we have conducted three separate measurements using dedicated planar Ge detectors—one with 55 Fe as a standard, one with 57 Co as a standard, and one standalone 71 Ge measurement. Our results yield a half-life of 11.468±0.008 days, which is consistent with, but significantly more precise than, the currently accepted value. With this experiment, the potential explanation of the gallium anomaly being due to an unexpectedly long 71 Ge half-life has been ruled out, leaving the anomaly's origin as an open question.

237 Np Fission Spectrum Cumulative Fission Product Yield Measurement Using Godiva IV Critical Assembly

Precise integral measurement of fast neutron-induced fission product yields for various actinides is of high interest for applied nuclear science. The goal of this effort is to improve uncertainties in fission product yield values of 237 Np. Fission was induced in a NpO 2 (NO 3 ) target using the Godiva IV critical assembly in burst mode. The irradiated sample was transferred to a high-resolution γ-ray detection setup within 50 minutes. γ-ray list mode data was collected from 50 minutes to 1 week after the irradiation. γ-ray spectroscopy was performed to analyze the time dependent γ-ray yields using an automated peak search algorithm to identify isotopes by their decay γ-ray energy and half-life. Finally, the initial activity for each isotope identified was used to calculate their fission product yield.

239 Pu Fission Spectrum Cumulative Fission Product Yield Measurement Using Godiva IV Critical Assembly

Precise integral measurement of fast neutron-induced fission product yields for various actinides is of high interest for applied nuclear science. The goal of this effort is to improve uncertainties in fission product yield values of 239 Pu. Fission was induced in a pure 239 Pu (>99%) target using the Godiva IV critical assembly in burst mode. Further, the irradiated sample was transferred to a high-resolution γ-ray detector within 45 minutes. γ-ray list mode data was collected from 45 minutes to 1 week after the irradiation. γ-ray spectroscopy was performed to analyze the time dependent γ-ray yields using an automated peak search algorithm to identify isotopes by their decay γ-ray energy and half-life. The initial activity for each isotope identified was used to calculate their fission product yield.

Quick Look Report of Godiva U233 shot March 2022 Data Collection Activities

This report discussing the March 2022 irradiation of U233 on the Godiva critical assembly using burst mode and subsequent analysis of the fission products starting at 65 minutes post irradiation, and ending 12 days later. The Short-Lived Fission Product Yield (SLFPY) project is one of many efforts under the Nuclear Physics Multi-Lab and related Venture Project. The objective of the SLFPY project is to provide improved measurements of fission product yields for select nuclides. The SLFPY project consists of measurement and analysis campaigns. To produce fission data, samples of actinide material are irradiated in a high-flux neutron environment. These samples are quickly placed in front of a detection system where both gamma singles and coincidence spectra are collected as a function of time. Gamma spectroscopy is performed on the irradiated material on site near the irradiation facility, starting as soon as feasible after the irradiation and continuing for 7 days or longer. Following the data collection, time-dependent fission yield analyses are performed using gamma-ray spectroscopy. This document summarizes the measurement campaign performed March 21 - April 4, 2022 where sub-gram quantities of 233 U nitrate (UO 2 (NO 3 ) 2 ) were irradiated in the Godiva reactor. The Godiva burst #2076 conducted under experiment IER 504 had a temperature change of +156 degrees Celsius, lasted 13.32 microseconds, and had a reactivity of $\$$1.089. The targets consisted of uranium oxide solution deposited in a quartz tube and packed with quartz wool. The flame-sealed quartz ampoules were used to contain the uranium samples for the irradiation and count activities. On March 22, 2022, at 10:27:00 a.m. the three uranium ampoules, along with a witness foil pack, were irradiated in the Godiva critical assembly using burst mode operations.

Experimental achievement and signatures of ignition at the National Ignition Facility

An inertial fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility, conducted on August 8, 2021 (N210808), recently produced more than a megajoule of fusion yield and passed Lawson's criterion for ignition [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)]. Here we describe the experimental improvements that enabled N210808 and present the first experimental measurements from an igniting plasma in the laboratory. Ignition metrics like the product of hot-spot energy and pressure squared, in the absence of self-heating, increased by ~ 35%, leading to record values and an enhancement from previous experiments in the hot-spot energy (~ 3×), pressure (~ 2×), and mass (~ 2×). These results are consistent with self-heating dominating other power balance terms. The burn rate increases by an order of magnitude after peak compression, and the hot-spot conditions show clear evidence for burn propagation into the dense fuel surrounding the hot spot. These novel dynamics and thermodynamic properties have never been observed on prior inertial fusion experiments.

Integral Measurement of the 237 Np($n$, γ) 238 Np Cross Section with Fast Neutrons

Accurate knowledge of the 237 Np($n$; γ) 238 Np cross section at fast neutron energies is important for applied nuclear science. The presently available experimental data has large disagreements in the fast neutron region. A measurement of the 237 Np($n$; γ) 238 Np cross section was performed using a well characterized fast neutron source and the results was compared with previous measurements and current nuclear data evaluations. This will provide an integral measurement that can be used as a benchmark for current evaluations. The observed activity of 238 Np was used to calculate the amount of 238 Np produced during the irradiation via the 237 Np($n$; γ) 238 Np and an integral cross section of 359(10) mb was measured. The 238 Np half-life has been measured with a result of 50.34(7) hours. An integral measurement of the 237 Np($n$; γ) 238 Np cross section has been measured. This result has been compared to the calculated integral cross section using the ENDF/BVIII.0 and JENDL-4.0 evaluated cross sections and found to be in good agreement with ENDF/BVIII.0 value of 367 mb. The JENDL-4.0 evaluation yields a value of 312 mb, which is significantly lower than the measured cross section.

Uranium integral fission product yields for a spectrally-shaped 14.1 MeV neutron source at the National Ignition Facility

This paper describes the experimental results for an energy tuning assembly created to modify the National Ignition Facility deuterium–tritium fusion neutron source into a notional thermonuclear and prompt fission neutron spectrum, which has applications in integral measurements, nuclear data benchmarks, and radiation effects on microelectronics. The Monte Carlo neutron transport utilized MCNP5 to estimate the ETA-modified fluence using the ENDF-B/VIII.0 and IRDFF-II continuous energy nuclear data libraries, and SCALE Sampler was used to estimate the systematic nuclear data covariance using ENDF-B/VII.1 and IRDFF-II in a 252-group structure. The experiment fielded eight activation foils and a highly enriched uranium sample. This provided fifteen reaction channels that were used in a forward-fit comparison to the modeled results and to unfold the neutron spectrum using STAYSL. Gamma-ray spectrometry was performed on the activation and highly enriched uranium foils, and the reduced Χ 2 between the modeled and experimental values was 1.21. The results from the STAYSL unfold, reduced Χ 2 = 1.62, indicated that the modeled neutron spectrum was achieved and the systematic nuclear data uncertainty associated with the neutron transport and activation product cross sections was representative of the experiment. Integral cumulative fission product yield data were collected for 37 mass chains with a combination of gamma-ray spectrometry and radiochemical analysis. Fission product analysis was generally in agreement with two models using a semi-empirical fit and the General Observables of Fission code, with the exception of mass chains 88, 109, 111, 112, 113, 129, 139, 142, 144, 151, and 156.

Search for elements 119 and 120

In this work, a search for production of the superheavy elements with atomic numbers 119 and 120 was performed in the 50 Ti + 249 Bk and 50 Ti + 249 Cf fusion-evaporation reactions, respectively, at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at GSI Darmstadt, Germany. Over four months of irradiation, the 249 Bk target partially decayed into 249 Cf, which allowed for a simultaneous search for both elements. Neither was detected at cross-section sensitivity levels of 65 and 200 fb for the 50 Ti + 249 Bk and 50 Ti + 249 Cf reactions, respectively, at a midtarget beam energy of E lab = 281.5 MeV. The nonobservation of elements 119 and 120 is discussed within the concept of fusion-evaporation reactions including various theoretical predictions on the fission-barrier heights of superheavy nuclei in the region of the island of stability.
