Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Strategic Research and Development Insights for Digital Twins

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is pleased to provide our response to the NITRD RFI on Digital Twins Research and Development. Digital twins are virtual representations of physical systems, leveraging real-time data to simulate and predict behaviors. ORNL is advancing digital twin technology across various disciplines, including neutron scattering, networking, science ecosystems, supercomputing, secure facilities, mobility technologies, materials design and discovery, power systems, fusion reactors, biological sciences, and earth observation. These efforts aim to enhance scientific research, operational efficiency, and decision-making processes. ORNL facilities, such as the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), Grid-C, Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), and Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), provide the infrastructure to develop and demonstrate these digital twin technologies. In this document, we lay out key challenges, research gaps, and future opportunities based on our experience with digital twins that aim to serve as useful contributions towards a National Digital Twins R&D Strategic Plan. In the remaining document, we address nine of the thirteen topic areas specified in the RFI.

Violation of the Cauchy–Born rule in multi-principal element alloys

Multi-principal element alloys are a novel class of materials that are formed by combining multiple elements in high concentrations and show exceptional properties compared to conventional alloys. These alloys have high configurational entropy due to inherent atomic disorder. The Cauchy–Born rule is a popular homogenization method for linking atomistic to continuum length scales. In this Letter, we use ab initio density functional theory calculations to report that the Cauchy–Born rule, which holds in conventional alloys in the absence of defects, is not valid in multi-principal element alloys. Further, the violation of the Cauchy–Born rule in these alloys is attributed to the presence of atomic disorder due to which the deformations are inhomogeneous. Our results also show the deviations in deformation are related to the magnitude of the stretch and shear by power laws.

Order Parameter Engineering for Random Systems

The chemical short-range order (CSRO) in crystalline materials influences the properties, and its effect is significant in the context of multicomponent materials. Here, we propose a scheme for the CSRO parameter or Δ-parameter in terms of the number of like and unlike bonds in the multicomponent systems. The OPERA or Order Parameter Engineering for RAndom Systems scheme for semi-canonical and canonical ensembles is proposed. The proposed framework of Δ-parameter with OPERA framework can generate the single-phase supercell with desired CSRO without explicit energy calculations and provides a computationally efficient scheme for exploration of the CSRO. We demonstrate the applicability of the Δ-parameter as a scalar quantity for describing the CSRO in multicomponent alloys and oxides (FCC-CoCrNi, BCC-MoNbTaW, and (CoCuMgNiZn)O).
