Addition of tabulated equation of state and neutrino leakage support to illinoisgrmhd

Here we have added support for realistic, microphysical, finite-temperature equations of state (EOS) and neutrino physics via a leakage scheme to illinoisgrmhd, an open-source GRMHD code for dynamical spacetimes in the einstein toolkit. These new features are provided by two new, nrpy+-based codes: nrpyeos, which performs highly efficient EOS table lookups and interpolations, and nrpyleakage, which implements a new, adaptive mesh refinement (AMR)-capable neutrino leakage scheme in the einstein toolkit. We have performed a series of strenuous validation tests that demonstrate the robustness of these new codes, particularly on the Cartesian AMR grids provided by carpet. Furthermore, we show results from fully dynamical GRMHD simulations of single unmagnetized neutron stars, and magnetized binary neutron star mergers. This new version of illinoisgrmhd, as well as nrpyeos and nrpyleakage, is pedagogically documented in jupyter notebooks and fully open source. The codes will be proposed for inclusion in an upcoming version of the einstein toolkit.

Handing off the outcome of binary neutron star mergers for accurate and long-term postmerger simulations

In this work, we perform binary neutron star (BNS) merger simulations in full dynamical general relativity with IllinoisGRMHD, on a Cartesian grid with adaptive-mesh refinement. After the remnant black hole has become nearly stationary, the evolution of the surrounding accretion disk on Cartesian grids over long timescales (~1s) is suboptimal, as Cartesian coordinates over-resolve the angular coordinates at large distances, and the accreting plasma flows obliquely across coordinate lines dissipating angular momentum artificially from the disk. To address this, we present the HandOff, a set of computational tools that enables the transfer of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) and spacetime data from IllinoisGRMHD to harm3d, a GRMHD code that specializes in modeling black hole accretion disks in static spacetimes over long timescales, making use of general coordinate systems with spherical topology. We demonstrate that the handoff allows for a smooth and reliable transition of GRMHD fields and spacetime data, enabling us to efficiently and reliably evolve BNS dynamics well beyond merger. We also discuss future plans, which involve incorporating advanced equations of state and neutrino physics into BNS simulations using the HandOff approach.

Thermodynamics conditions of matter in the neutrino decoupling region during neutron star mergers

In this work we investigate the thermodynamics conditions at which neutrinos decouple from matter in neutron star merger remnants by post-processing results of merger simulations. We find that the matter density and the neutrino energies are the most relevant quantities in determining the decoupling surface location. For mean energy neutrinos (~9, 15 and 24 MeV for ν e , $\bar{ν}$ e and ν μ,τ , respectively) the transition between diffusion and free-streaming conditions occurs around 10 11 g cm -3 for all neutrino species. Weak and thermal equilibrium freeze-out occurs deeper (several 10 12 g cm -3 ) for heavy-flavor neutrinos than for $\bar{ν}$ e and ν e (≳10 11 g cm -3 ). Decoupling temperatures are broadly in agreement with the average neutrino energies, with softer equations of state characterized by ~1 MeV larger decoupling temperatures. Neutrinos streaming at infinity with different energies come from different remnant parts. While low-energy neutrinos (~3 MeV) decouple at ρ~10 13 g cm -3 , T~10 MeV and Y e ≲0.1 close to weak equilibrium, high-energy ones (~50 MeV ) decouple from the disk at ρ~10 9 g cm -3 , T~2 MeV and Y e ≳0.25. The presence of a massive NS or a BH influences the neutrino thermalization. While in the former case decoupling surfaces are present for all relevant energies, the lower maximum density ( ≲10 12 g cm -3 ) in BH-torus systems does not allow softer neutrinos to thermalize and diffuse.

Compact Binary Progenitors of Short Gamma-Ray Bursts

In recent years, detailed observations and accurate numerical simulations have provided support to the idea that mergers of compact binaries containing either two neutron stars (NSs) or an NS and a black hole (BH) may constitute the central engine of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs). The merger of such compact binaries is expected to lead to the production of a spinning BH surrounded by an accreting torus. Several mechanisms can extract energy from this system and power the SGRBs. Here we connect observations and numerical simulations of compact binary mergers, and use the current sample of SGRBs with measured energies to constrain the mass of their powering tori. By comparing the masses of the tori with the results of fully general-relativistic simulations, we are able to infer the properties of the binary progenitors that yield SGRBs. By assuming a constant efficiency in converting torus mass into jet energy epsilon(sub jet) = 10%, we find that most of the tori have masses smaller than 0.01 Solar M, favoring "high-mass" binary NSs mergers, i.e., binaries with total masses approx >1.5 the maximum mass of an isolated NS. This has important consequences for the gravitational wave signals that may be detected in association with SGRBs, since "high-mass" systems do not form a long-lived hypermassive NS after the merger. While NS-BH systems cannot be excluded to be the engine of at least some of the SGRBs, the BH would need to have an initial spin of approx. 0.9 or higher.

General Relativistic Simulations of Magnetized Plasmas Around Merging Supermassive Black Holes

Coalescing supermassive black hole binaries are produced by the mergers of galaxies and are the most powerful sources of gravitational waves accessible to space-based gravitational observatories. Some such mergers may occur in the presence of matter and magnetic fields and hence generate an electromagnetic counterpart. In this paper we present the first general relativistic simulations of magnetized plasma around merging supermassive black holes using the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic code Whisky. By considering different magnetic field strengths, going from non-magnetically dominated to magnetically dominated regimes, we explore how magnetic fields affect the dynamics of the plasma and the possible emission of electromagnetic signals. In particular we observe, total amplification of the magnetic field of approx 2 orders of magnitude which is driven by the accretion onto the binary and that leads to stronger electromagnetic signals than in the force-free regime where such amplifications are not possible.
