Translator Plan: A Coordinated Vision for Fiscal Years 2023-2025

Translators serve a unique role in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility, offering scientific input through various leadership and service roles. The Translators direct the creation of value-added products (VAPs) and analysis tools that make ARM measurements more accessible to the scientific community. Translators also serve as liaisons between users and the ARM infrastructure, collecting information about priorities and communicating ARM data and services. A key group focus is supporting the DOE Atmospheric System Research (ASR) program scientists and ASR’s efforts towards a process-level understanding of cloud-aerosol interactions, and in reducing uncertainty in global climate model projections. The ARM Translator Group (Table 1) consists of the five Translators, a representative of software development, and one from the Data Quality Office (DQO). Additionally, the ARM Engineering and Process Manager participates in this group and provides input and direction from ARM and its programmatic priorities.

microbasew.c1

The continuous baseline microphysical retrieval, Wacr-based (MICROBASEW) VAP is a baseline retrieval of cloud microphysical properties. MICROBASEW uses a combination of observations from the W-band, zenith pointing radar (WACR), the ceilometer, the micropulse lidar (MPL), the microwave radiometer (MWR) and a merged thermodynamic profile (MERGED SOUNDING) VAP in order to determine the profiles of liquid/ice water content (L/IWC), liquid/ice cloud particle effective radius (re) and cloud fraction.

Lifting Condensation Level Height (LCL Height) Value-Added Product Report

The lifting condensation level height (LCL, m) is determined from continuous surface-air observations of relative humidity and temperature as the altitude where the surface-air moisture equals saturation following a dry-adiabatic ascent. Values are computed from surface meteorological observations for 16 facilities belonging to the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility Southern Great Plains (SGP) atmospheric observatory and for 133 Oklahoma Mesonet (OKM) stations. The LCL Height Value-Added Product (VAP) was developed for use by the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) ARM Symbiotic Simulation and Observation (LASSO) project (Gustafson et al. 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020).

ARM FY2022 Radar Plan

The fundamental objective of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) radar facility is to provide high-quality radar observations to the scientific user community with an overarching goal of improving the treatment of clouds and precipitation in climate models. ARM has a complement of 32 radars, including scanning and zenith pointing varieties (Table 1). The effort to maintain and operate these radars is significant and requires a large, distributed staffing commitment. However, at available staffing levels, ARM’s experience dictates that it is not feasible to ensure the continuous, high-level operations expected by the ARM user community for all radars at all locations at all times. Therefore, priorities must be established to routinely manage select radar operations every fiscal year.

KAZRARSCL-CLOUDSAT Value Added Product Data Stream

The KAZRARSCL-CLOUDSAT Value-Added Product (VAP) is based on the KAZR-ARSCL VAP, which provides cloud boundaries and best-estimate time-height fields of radar moments. The KAZRARSCL-CLOUDSAT VAP applies a statistically-derived calibration offset to reflectivity fields in order to align them with observations from the spaceborne CloudSat Cloud Profiling Radar. For details on the offset values applied, please refer to "Kollias, P., Puigdomènech Treserras, B., and Protat, A.: Calibration of the 2007–2017 record of ARM Cloud Radar Observations using CloudSat, Atmos. Meas. Tech. Discuss., https://doi.org/10.5194/amt-2019-34, 2019."

Cloud optical depth and liquid effective radius retrievals from SPHOT zenith radiances

A new three-channel (440, 870, and 1640 nm) retrieval algorithm for cloud optical depth has recently been developed by Christine Chiu and her co-workers [Chiu et al., 2012]. This VAP is to implement the three-channel cloud optical depth retrieval algorithm as an ARM operational VAP. First, simultaneously retrieved cloud optical depth and effective radius datasets will be generated by using the pre-calibrated zenith radiance measurements taken from the ARM Sun-Photometer (SPHOT) and the NASA AERONET and Satellite-based surface albedo derived from MODSI. Finally, the algorithm produces uncertainties along with the retrieval products. This VAP outputs a daily NetCDF file.

Emergent Concepts from a Community Ideation on AI4ESP

This AI4ESP white paper is the outcome of an open ideation session led by PNNL that numerous institutions participated in. The leadership team included Amy Goldman, Huiying Ren, Tim Scheibe, and James Stegen. The white paper is broken into two sections: (1) A summary of the ideation session, and (2) a short summary of a ‘meta idea’ that emerged from combining multiple ideas spanning the three primary focal area themes articulated in BER’s AI4ESP guidance: A - Data Acquisition and Assimilation, B - Predictive Modeling, and C - Insight from Complex Data. The white paper, therefore, has two goals. The first section is meant to be a resource for innovating around how to pursue open, community-based ideation in virtual environments. The second section is meant as an example of the kinds of ‘meta ideas’ that can emerge from bringing diverse ideas together in a single shared space. We consider the second section to be a submission to BER’s request for white papers around AI4ESP.

The Usage of Observing System Simulation Experiments and Reinforcement Learning to Optimize Experimental Design and Operation

Various organizations regularly conduct field campaigns across the globe designed to probe and improve atmospheric process understanding. However, these campaigns are mostly designed ad-hoc, and rely on anecdotes and knowledge of what was successful in previous campaigns. Such ad-hoc experiment design results in sub-optimal instrument siting and operation strategies. Inadequate targeted data collection of extreme weather is a major limitation to Earth and Environmental Systems Science Division (EESSD)’s goals of data model integration (4.5.3), which limits the knowledge gained through the collected observations, holding back significant advances in predictability. While advances in instrument design are always chipping away at these limitations, we are not optimally utilizing the instrumentation we currently possess.

ARM FY2021 Radar Plan

The fundamental objective of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) radar facility is to provide high-quality radar observations to the scientific user community with an overarching goal of improving the treatment of clouds and precipitation in climate models. ARM has a complement of 32 scanning and zenith pointing radars, not including the radar wind profilers. This large number of radars and deployment locales require an enormous commitment of effort to keep operational. It has been the experience in ARM that all these radars cannot be always operated at a high level, and priorities need to be developed to properly manage operations every fiscal year. This document provides an overview of the FY20 activities and documents the priorities for FY21.

microbasekaplus.c1

This microbasekaplus datastream is produced by re-writed micorbaseka vap (microbasekaplus) in python under ADI framewrok, and added uncertainties for the microphysics. The original Microbase VAP was developed in 2002. The primary purpose of producing this VAP was to provide the required microphysical values for input to the Broad Band Heating Rate Profiles (BBHRP) VAP in order to generate estimations of radiative heating rates. It served the Radiatively Important Parameters Best Estimate (RIBPE) VAP in the capacity of providing baseline cloud microphysical values as input. Microbase produces cloud microphysical properties based on cloud radar measurements taken at all fixed ARM sites.
