Assessment of Needs for a Neptunium Certified Reference Material

This document describes the results of a detailed assessment of needs within the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry (NAC) section at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for a neptunium certified reference material (CRM) used for instrument calibrations and measurement control. Also included is a summary of input from several other organizations that expressed interest for such a reference material as well as a general needs analysis within the broader nuclear analytical community based on a literature search of publications describing measurements for neptunium.

Sister Rod Destructive Examinations (FY23) Appendix D: Fission Gas, Fuel Burnup, and Fuel Isotopic Measurements

As a part of DOE NE High Burnup Spent Fuel Data Project, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is performing destructive examinations (DEs) of high burnup (HBU) (>45 GWd/MTU) spent nuclear fuel (SNF) rods from the North Anna Nuclear Power Station operated by Dominion Energy. The SNF rods, called sister rods or sibling rods, are all HBU and include four different kinds of fuel rod cladding: standard Zircaloy-4 (Zirc-4), low-tin (LT) Zirc-4, ZIRLO, and M5. The DEs are being conducted to obtain a baseline of the HBU rod’s condition before dry storage and are focused on understanding overall SNF rod strength and durability. Composite fuel and defueled cladding will be tested to derive material properties. Although the data generated can be used for multiple purposes, one primary goal for obtaining the post-irradiation examination data and the associated measured mechanical properties is to support SNF dry storage licensing and relicensing activities by (1) addressing identified knowledge gaps and (2) enhancing the technical basis for post-storage transportation, handling, and subsequent disposition. This appendix documents the status of the ORNL Phase 1 DE activities related to fission gas sample analysis, fuel burnup analysis, and fuel isotopic analysis of selected sister specimens in Phase 1 of the sister rod test program.

Inline gamma-spectrometry of fission product elements after rapid high-pressure ion chromatographic separation

Analysis of irradiated material shortly after irradiation can be non-trivial due to highly radioactive activation and fission isotopes increasing dead time in gamma-ray detection systems, often requiring a “cooling-period” between receipt of a sample and the subsequent analysis. A direct separation–detection method has been developed combining ion chromatography and inductively coupled mass spectrometry for rapid, low-level analysis of fission products; it cannot, however, detect certain short-lived species below the detection limit of the system. In this paper we report the implementation of an inline gamma-ray detector, which was added post-separation, pre-analysis, to test the quality and utility of elementally-isolated gamma-ray spectroscopy.
