Microstrain screening towards defect-less layered transition metal oxide cathodes

Microstrain and the associated surface-to-bulk propagation of structural defects are known to be major roadblocks to developing high-energy and long-life batteries. However, the origin and effects of microstrain during the synthesis of battery materials remain largely unknown. Here, in this study, we perform microstrain screening during real-time and realistic synthesis of sodium layered oxide cathodes. Evidence gathered from multiscale in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and microscopy characterization collectively reveals that the spatial distribution of transition metals within individual precursor particles strongly governs the nanoscale phase transformation, local charge heterogeneity and accumulation of microstrain during synthesis. This unexpected dominance of transition metals results in a counterintuitive outward propagation of defect nucleation and growth. These insights direct a more rational synthesis route to reduce the microstrain and crystallographic defects within the bulk lattice, leading to significantly improved structural stability. The present work on microstrain screening represents a critical step towards synthesis-by-design of defect-less battery materials.

LT-LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 : A Partially-Disordered, Composite Rock Salt Cathode Prepared by Flame Spray Pyrolysis for Li-Ion Batteries

A unique composite cathode structure for Li-ion batteries, designated LT-LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 (or LT-NMC111), has been prepared by flame spray pyrolysis and subsequent annealing between 400 and 650 °C. It is composed predominantly of structurally-integrated and partially-disordered lithiated-spinel and layered components, both of which can be broadly described as partially-disordered rock salt constituents. The paper describes the evolution of the LT-NMC111 structure as a function of the synthesis method, annealing temperature, and electrochemical properties in the context of other recently reported “low-temperature” (LT) materials, such as LT-LiCo 1−x Al x O 2 and LT-LiMn 0.5 Ni 0.5 O 2 or, in spinel notation, LT-Li 2 Co 2–2x Al 2x O 4 and LT-Li 2 MnNiO 4 , respectively.

Effect of Electrolytes on the Cathode-Electrolyte Interfacial Stability of Fe-Based Layered Cathodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Iron (Fe)-based layered oxide cathodes that employ Fe 3+ /Fe 4+ redox reaction present a family of attractive cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries as iron is abundant, low-cost, and environmentally benign. However, their electrochemical performance is not yet satisfactory and requires further improvement. In this study, we investigate the effect of electrolytes on the electrochemical performance of α -NaFeO 2 , a prototypical model of Fe-based layered cathodes. First, we established the critical impact of the poor cathode-electrolyte interfacial stability on cell performances. Systematic electrochemical tests and material characterizations further revealed the degradation mechanism in which the highly reactive Fe 4+ state in the charged Na 1−x FeO 2 electrodes promotes severe electrolyte decomposition and subsequent growth of a thick interface layer that leads to impedance rise and performance degradation. In addition, the superior performance of NaPF 6 over NaClO 4 and the beneficial effect of the FEC additive are reported.
