Absorption spectra of Fe I in the 1550-3215-A region

The high-dispersion absorption spectrum of Fe I is reported in the 1550-3215-A region. Included are wavelengths of about 3000 observed spectral features, improved spectral assignments, 248 new energy levels, and a value for the ionization potential of 63 737/cm obtained from extrapolation of Rydberg series. Improved wavelengths for several hundred V I and Ti I spectral lines determined on the same spectrograms as the iron data also are presented.

Spectral studies related to dissociation of HBr, HCl and BrO

Concern over halogen catalyzed decomposition of O3 in the upper atmosphere has generated need for data on the atomic and molecular species X, HX and XO (where X is Cl and Br). Of special importance are Cl produced from freon decomposition and Cl and Br produced from natural processes and from other industrial and agricultural chemicals. Basic spectral data is provided on HCl, HBr, and BrO necessary to detect specific states and energy levels, to enable detailed modeling of the processes involving molecular dissociation, ionization, etc., and to help evaluate field experiments to check the validity of model calculations for these species in the upper atmosphere. Results contained in four published papers and two major spectral compilations are summarized together with other results obtained.

Need for high resolution in VUV Rydberg state spectroscopy

The paper emphasizes the necessity of high energy resolution (resolving powers greater than 100,000) in VUV spectroscopic determinations of atomic and molecular Rydberg electronic structures. Attention is given to spectral observations of Rydberg levels in Ge I near the 4p 2P(0)1/2 limit, in Sr I near the 4d 2D3/2 limit, and in diatomic hydrogen halides (especially H I) below the X2Pi3/2 limit.

Absorption spectrum of Pb I between 1350 and 2041 A

The high resolution absorption spectrum of Pb I is reported between 1350 and 2041 A. Transitions are observed from the 6p2 (1/2,1/2)0, (3/2,1/2)1, and (3/2,1/2)2 levels to levels with J less than or equal to 2 associated with 6pns and 6pnd configurations. Energy levels have been determined with n(asterisk) values as high as 74. More than 500 spectral features and 370 odd parity energy levels are reported, a major part of which are new. These observations include five electric quadrupole transitions and 31 nuclear-spin-induced transitions from the Pb-207 isotope. Ionization limits of 59819.57 per cm and 73900.64 per cm have been determined for levels converging on the 6p 2P(1/2)O and 6p 2P(3/2)O levels of Pb II, respectively. An analysis of these data in terms of Lu-Fano graphical methods and multichannel quantum defect parametrization also is presented.

Ultraviolet solar identifications based on extended absorption series observed in the laboratory spectrum of Si I

The absorption spectrum of Si I in the wavelength region between 1500 and 1900 A has been photographed at high resolution. The silicon vapor was produced in a 122-cm-long King furnace at 1800 to 2300 C. Forty-two Rydberg series have been observed from the ground state terms 3p(2)3P and 1D to terms associated with the 3pns and 3pnd configurations. All of the series from these configurations with J less than 4 have been extended with the 3pnd 3D(3) levels reaching n = 56. Numerous perturbations have been observed. This laboratory work has provided the basis for extending the identification of silicon lines in the solar spectrum. Nearly all lines found in the laboratory spectrum are also found in rocket spectrograms of the solar chromosphere. More than 300 lines have been attributed to Si I. The excellent correlation between laboratory and solar Si I lines is illustrated.
