Ion irradiation induced crystalline disorder accelerates interfacial phonon conversion and reduces thermal boundary resistance

Traditional understanding of the thermal boundary resistance (TBR) across solid-solid interfaces posits that the vibrational densities of states overlap between materials dictates interfacial energy transport, with phonon scattering occurring at the interface. Using atomistic simulations, we show a mechanism for control of TBR; point defects near an interface can lead to both short- and midrange disorder, accelerating the conversion of vibrational energy between bulk and interfacial modes, ultimately reducing the TBR. In conclusion, we experimentally demonstrate this reduction through ion irradiation of gallium nitride and subsequently measuring the TBR across Al/GaN interfaces.

An Extensive Catalog of Early-type Dwarf Galaxies in the Local Universe: Morphology and Environment

We present an extensive catalog of 5405 early-type dwarf (dE) galaxies located in the various environments, i.e., clusters, groups, and fields, of the local universe (z < 0.01). The dEs are selected through visual inspection of the Legacy survey's g–r–z combined tricolor images. The inspected area, covering a total sky area of 7643 deg 2 , encompasses two local clusters (Virgo and Fornax), 265 groups, and the regions around 586 field galaxies of M K < -21 mag. The catalog aims to be one of the most extensive and publicly accessible collections of data on dEs, despite its complex completeness limits, which may not accurately represent its statistical completeness. The strength of the catalog lies in the morphological characteristics, including nucleated, tidal, and ultradiffuse dEs. The two clusters contribute nearly half (2437 out of 5405) of the dEs, and the 265 groups contribute 2103 dEs. There are 864 dEs in 586 fields, i.e., ~1.47 dEs per field. Using a standard definition commonly used in literature, we identify 100 ultradiffuse galaxies (UDGs), which compose ~2% of the dE population. We find that 40% of our sample dEs harbor a central nucleus, and among the UDG population, a majority (79%) are nonnucleated. About 1.3% of dEs suffer from ongoing tidal disturbance by nearby massive galaxies, and only 0.03% show a sign of recent dwarf–dwarf mergers. The association between dEs and their nearest bright neighbor galaxies suggests that dEs are more likely created where their neighbors are non-star-forming ones.

Interface-independent sound speed and thermal conductivity of atomic-layer-deposition-grown amorphous AlN / Al 2 O 3 multilayers with varying oxygen composition

Dielectric amorphous multilayers (AMLs) play a critical role in a wide array of technologies such as optical coatings, nanoelectronics, energy harvesting, and recovery devices. However, despite their wide applications, a robust understanding of the effect of the interplay between chemical and structural disorder on the thermal properties of AMLs is still lacking. Therefore, in this paper, we experimentally and numerically investigate the effects of composition and interface density on the sound speed and thermal conductivity of a series of amorphous aluminum nitride and aluminum oxide multilayers grown via plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition. To systematically change the composition, the oxygen content of the AMLs is proportionally varied with interface density during growth. We find that the longitudinal sound speed of these AMLs is dictated by the oxygen content instead of the number of interfaces. The thermal conductivity, in contrast, is dictated by both interface density and oxygen content. The interfaces act to decrease the thermal conductivity, whereas the oxygen content increases the thermal conductivity. Due to the competing influence of the interfaces and oxygen content, the thermal conductivity of the AMLs remains nearly constant as a function of interface density. Furthermore, our study provides crucial insights into the effect of the interplay of composition and interfaces on the sound speed and thermal conductivity of AMLs.

Thickness-Independent Vibrational Thermal Conductance across Confined Solid-Solution Thin Films

In this study, we experimentally show that the thermal conductance across confined solid-solution crystalline thin films between parent materials does not necessarily lead to an increase in thermal resistances across the thin-film geometries with increasing film thicknesses, which is counterintuitive to the notion that adding a material serves to increase the total thermal resistance. Confined thin epitaxial Ca 0.5 Sr 0.5 TiO 3 solid-solution films with systematically varying thicknesses in between two parent perovskite materials of calcium titanate and (001)-oriented strontium titanate are grown, and thermoreflectance techniques are used to accurately measure the thermal boundary conductance across the confined solid-solution films, showing that the thermal resistance does not substantially increase with the addition of solid-solution films with increasing thicknesses from ~1 to ~10 nm. Contrary to the macroscopic understanding of thermal transport where adding more material along the heat propagation direction leads to larger thermal resistances, our results potentially offer experimental support to the computationally predicted concept of vibrational matching across interfaces. This concept is based on the fact that a better match in the available heat-carrying vibrations due to an interfacial layer can lead to lower thermal boundary resistances, thus leading to an enhancement in thermal boundary conductance across interfaces driven by the addition of a thin “vibrational bridge” layer between two solids.

Molecular tail chemistry controls thermal transport in fullerene films

Herein we report on the thermal conductivities of alkyl- and indene-group functionalized fullerene derivative thin films as measured via time domain thermoreflectance and steady state thermoreflectance. The thermal conductivities vary from 0.064 ± 0.007 W m – 1 K – 1 for [6,6]-phenyl C 61 -butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) to 0.15 ± 0.017 W m – 1 K – 1 for indene- C 60 bisadduct at room temperature and do not exhibit significant temperature dependence from 300 to 375 K. In comparison to the thermal conductivity of PCBM, increasing the length of the alkyl chain, as in the case of [6,6]-phenyl C 61 -butyric acid butyl ester, and [6,6]-phenyl C 61 -butyric acid octyl ester leads to higher thermal conductivities. Likewise, increasing the number of alkyl chains attached to the fullerenes as in the case of bisadduct PCBM leads to a higher thermal conductivity compared to that of PCBM. We present atomistic insights into the role of chemical functionalization on the overall heat transfer in these fullerene derivatives by conducting molecular dynamics simulations and lattice dynamics calculations. The thermal conductivities predicted via our atomistic simulations qualitatively agree with the experimental trends for our fullerene derivatives. Lattice dynamics calculations reveal that one of the main factors dictating the ultralow thermal conductivities in fullerene derivatives is the large reduction in modal diffusivities in the molecular crystals as calculated from the Allen-Feldman model, thus providing an explanation for their largely reduced thermal conductivities as compared to that of C 60 crystals. The low diffusivities result from high degrees of localization of Einstein-like vibrations in fullerene derivatives due to the molecular side chains, providing the ability to dial-in the properties of these low thermal conductivity solids via molecular engineering.
