Effect of Dilute Magnetism in a Topological Insulator

Three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) has emerged as a unique state of quantum matter and generated enormous interests in condensed matter physics. The surfaces of a 3D TI consist of a massless Dirac cone, which is characterized by the Z 2 topological invariant. Introduction of magnetism on the surface of a TI is essential to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect and other novel magneto-electric phenomena. Here, by using a combination of first-principles calculations, magneto-transport and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we study the electronic properties of gadolinium (Gd)-doped Sb 2 Te 3 . Our study shows that Gd doped Sb 2 Te 3 is a spin-orbit-induced bulk band-gap material, whose surface is characterized by a single topological surface state. Our results provide a new platform to investigate the interactions between dilute magnetism and topology in magnetic doped topological materials.

Anisotropically large anomalous and topological Hall effect in a kagome magnet

Recently, kagome materials have become an engrossing platform to study the interplay among symmetry, magnetism, topology, and electron correlation. The latest works in RMn6Sn6 (R = rare earth metal) have illustrated that this family could be intriguing to investigate various physical phenomena due to large spin-orbit coupling and strong magnetic ordering. However, combined transport and spectroscopic studies in RMn6Sn6 materials are still limited. Here, we report magnetic, magneto-transport, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of a kagome magnet ErMn 6 Sn 6 that undergoes antiferromagnetic (T N = 345 K) to ferrimagnetic (T c = 68 K) phase transitions. We observe a large anomalous and topological Hall effect serving as transport signatures of the nontrivial Berry curvature. Our spectroscopic results complemented by theoretical calculations show the multi-orbital kagome fermiology. This work provides new insight into the tunability and interplay of topology and magnetism in a kagome magnet.

Magnetic structure, excitations and short-range order in honeycomb Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6

Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 has a layered hexagonal structure with a honeycomb lattice constituted by Ni 2+ and a chiral charge distribution of Na + that resides between the Ni layers. In the present work, the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 is confirmed at TN˜ 27 K, and further, it is found to be robust up to 8 T magnetic field and 1.2 GPa external pressure; and, without any frequency-dependence. Slight deviations from nominal Na-content (up to 5%) does not seem to influence the magnetic transition temperature, TN. Isothermal magnetization curves remain almost linear up to 13 T. Our analysis of neutron diffraction data shows that the magnetic structure of Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 is faithfully described by a model consisting of two phases described by the commensurate wave vectors vec kc, (0.5 0 0) and (0.5 0 0.5), with an additional short-range order component incorporated in to the latter phase. Consequently, a zig-zag long-range ordered magnetic phase of Ni 2+ results in the compound, mixed with a short-range ordered phase, which is supported by our specific heat data. Theoretical computations based on density functional theory (DFT) predict predominantly in-plane magnetic exchange interactions that conform to a J1-J2-J3 model with a strong J3 term. The computationally predicted parameters lead to a reliable estimate for TN and the experimentally observed zig-zag magnetic structure. A spin wave excitation in Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 at E ˜ 5 meV at T = 5 K is mapped out through inelastic neutron scattering experiments, which is reproduced by linear spin wave theory calculations using the J values from our computations. Our specific heat data and inelastic neutron scattering data strongly indicate the presence of short-range spin correlations, at T > TN, stemming from incipient antiferromagnetic clusters.

Magnetic anisotropy in uranium monosulfide probed by magnetic torque measurements

We have studied the magnetic torque in uranium monosulfide (US) single crystals to explore the magnetic anisotropy in this material. Uranium monosulfide crystallizes in a cubic, NaCl-type of crystal structure and exhibits the largest magnetocrystalline anisotropy observed in cubic systems. By performing detailed torque measurements we observe a strongly anisotropic behavior in the paramagnetic phase due to crystal defects and quadrupolar pair interactions. Our studies also confirm the presence of a large anisotropy in the ferromagnetic state of the US system with the <100>, <111>, and <110> directions being the hard, easy, and intermediate axes, respectively. Furthermore, the anisotropy in the paramagnetic phase shows similar characteristics to the anisotropy observed in the ferromagnetic phase, as characterized by second and fourth rank susceptibility terms. The similarity of the anisotropic behaviors in paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases is the consequence of strong magnetoelastic properties in this system, which possibly lead to the rhombohedral structural distortion, not only in the ferromagnetic phase but also in the paramagnetic phase (induced by applied magnetic field).

Absence of long-range magnetic order in lithium-containing honeycombs in the Li–Cr–Sb(Te)–O phases

Li 3 ((LiCr)(Te/Sb))O 6 compounds where Cr atoms along with Li and Te or Sb are part of a honeycomb and are studied using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and neutron diffraction. The oxides stoichiometries as determined from the neutron diffraction studies are Li 4.47 Cr 0.53 TeO 6 and Li 3.88 Cr 1.12 SbO 6 with a stable oxidation state of +3 for Cr. Both the compounds crystallize in space group C2/m with intermixing of cations at the 4g sites leaving the 2a sites preferentially for Te or Sb. Again, the Li + ions alone predominantly occur in the interlayer sites. Both the compounds show a broad anomaly in specific heat at 8 K, which is robust against 8 T. A corresponding anomaly is absent in the magnetic susceptibility but recovers from its derivative, dχ(T)/dT. Here, we ascertain the magnetic anomaly temperatures (T a ) of Li 4.47 Cr 0.53 TeO 6 and Li 3.88 Cr 1.12 SbO 6 as 5.9 K and 6.7 K respectively from specific heat. Although the physical properties indicated a low temperature anomaly, neutron diffraction data did not reveal a magnetic signal or a structural anomaly down to 1.5 K. This rules out a conventional long-range ordered magnetic ground state in either compounds. Combining the results from specific heat, neutron diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance, we put forth a scenario of depleted honeycomb lattice of Cr 3+ with predominant short-range magnetic correlations as the magnetic ground states of the title compounds.

Crossover from Kondo to Fermi-liquid behavior induced by high magnetic field in 1 T -VTe 2 single crystals

The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of metallic 1T -VTe 2 single crystals were investigated at temperatures from 1.3 to 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 35 T. Upon applying a high magnetic field, it is found that the electrical resistivity displays a crossover from the logarithmic divergence of the single-impurity Kondo effect to the Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures. The Brillouin scale of the negative magnetoresistivity above the Kondo temperature T K = 12 K indicates that the Kondo features originate from intercalated V ions, with S = 1/2. Both magnetic susceptibility and the Hall effect show an anomaly around T K . By using the modified Hamann expression we successfully describe the temperature-dependent resistivity under various magnetic fields, which shows the characteristic peak below T K due to the splitting of the Kondo resonance.

The influence of lattice defects, recombination, and clustering on thermal transport in single crystal thorium dioxide

Thermal transport is a key controlling property for thorium dioxide in many applications where defect-generating radiation fields are present. An understanding of the effect of nanoscale lattice defects on thermal transport in this material is currently unavailable due to a lack of high-quality, single crystal material from which unit processes may be investigated. In this work, a series of thorium dioxide single crystals are exposed to 2 MeV proton irradiation at room temperature and 600°C to create microscale regions with varying densities and types of point and extended defects. Defected regions are investigated using spatial domain thermoreflectance to quantify the change in thermal conductivity as a function of ion fluence as well as transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy to interrogate the structure of the generated defects. Together, this com- bination of methods provides important initial insight into defect formation, recombination, and clustering in thorium dioxide and the effect of those defects on thermal transport. These methods also provide a promising pathway for the quantification of the smallest-scale defects which cannot be captured using traditional microscopy techniques and play and outsized role in degrading thermal performance.

Magnetic, transport and thermal properties of δ-phase UZr 2

Here, polycrystals of hexagonal δ-phase UZr 2 have been synthesised and studied by means of heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetisation, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, thermoelectric power, thermal conductivity measurements, for the first time, at temperatures from 1.8 to 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 8 T. The weak temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the small value of both Seebeck (0.75 μV/K at room temperature) and of the Sommerfeld coefficient (13.5 mJ mol –1 K –2 ) point to 5f-electrons in this material having a delocalised nature. The electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance indicate the presence of significant electronic disorder in δ-UZr 2 , consistent with the disorder in its crystal structure. Density functional theory calculations have been performed and compared to experimental results.

Observation of gapped state in rare-earth monopnictide HoSb

The rare-earth monopnictide family is attracting an intense current interest driven by its unusual extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) property and the potential presence of topologically non-trivial surface states. The experimental observation of non-trivial surface states in this family of materials are not ubiquitous. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, magnetotransport, and parallel first-principles modeling, we examine the nature of electronic states in HoSb. Although we find the presence of bulk band gaps at the G and X-symmetry points of the Brillouin zone, we do not find these gaps to exhibit band inversion so that HoSb does not host a Dirac semimetal state. Our magnetotransport measurements indicate that HoSb can be characterized as a correlated nearly-complete electron-hole-compensated semimetal. Our analysis reveals that the nearly perfect electron-hole compensation could drive the appearance of non-saturating XMR effect in HoSb.

Additive-assisted synthesis and optoelectronic properties of (CH 3 NH 3 ) 4 Bi 6 I 22

Hybrid organic-inorganic halides containing Bi and Sb generally exhibit higher stability and lower toxicity compared to Pb analogues. Here, in this work, synthesis, crystal and electronic structures and optical properties of a brand-new methylammonium bismuth iodide, (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 (MA + = CH 3 NH 3 + ), are reported. Interestingly, we find that the presence of the HgI2 is necessary for the targeted preparation of (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 . (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 contains isolated [Bi 6 I 22 ] 4- clusters made of six edge-sharing octahedral BiI6 units, which are separated by MA + cations in its 0D crystal structure. A relatively low optical band gap of 1.9 eV was estimated for (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 based on diffuse reflectance measurements. An intense photoluminescence peak emerges at 636 nm at low temperatures that supports the assigned band gap value. Electronic structure calculations show the presence of flat bands in the valence and conduction bands, consistent with the low-dimensional structure of (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 , and slightly indirect nature of the bandgap. Our findings suggest that the use of facilitator moieties such as HgI 2 may provide a pathway to obtaining alternative methylammonium bismuth iodides to (MA) 3 Bi 2 I 9 .

Experimental observation of drumhead surface states in SrAs 3

The topological nodal-line semimetal (TNS) is a unique class of material with a one dimensional line node accompanied by a nearly dispersionless two-dimensional sur- face state. However, a direct observation of the so called drumhead surface state within current nodal-line materials is still elusive. Here, using high-resolution angle- resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) along with first-principles calculations, we report the observation of a topological nodal-loop (TNL) in SrAs 3 , whereas CaAs 3 exhibits topologically trivial state. Our data reveal that surface projections of the bulk nodal-points are connected by clear drumhead surface states in SrAs 3 . Furthermore, our magneto-transport and magnetization data clearly suggest the presence (absence) of surface state in SrAs 3 (CaAs 3 ). Notably, the observed topological states in RAs 3 (R = Ca, Sr) are well separated from other bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level. RAs 3 , thus, offers a unique opportunity to realize an archetype nodal-loop semimetal and establish a platform for gaining a deeper understanding of the quantum phase transitions.
