Searching for life with the Terrestrial Planet Finder: Lagrange point options for a formation flying interferometer

In this paper, we describe the mission design for TPF assuming a distributed spacecraft concept using formation flight around both a halo orbit around L2 as well as a heliocentric orbit. Although the mission architecture is still under study, the next two years will include study of four design cncepts and a downselect to two concepts around 2005.

Invariant Manifolds, the Spatial Three-Body Problem and Space Mission Design

The invariant manifold structures of the collinear libration points for the spatial restricted three-body problem provide the framework for understanding complex dynamical phenomena from a geometric point of view. In particular, the stable and unstable invariant manifold 'tubes' associated to libration point orbits are the phase space structures that provide a conduit for orbits between primary bodies for separate three-body systems. These invariant manifold tubes can be used to construct new spacecraft trajectories, such as 'Petit Grand Tour' of the moons of Jupiter. Previous work focused on the planar circular restricted three-body problem. The current work extends the results to the spatial case.

Simulation of formation flight near Lagrange points for the TPF Mission

In this paper, we focus on an orbit near the L***2***. Lagrange point. Our work in the study of the feasibility of formation flight near the Lagrange points indicates that 1) formation flight near L***2*** is dynamically possible for the TPF Mission and 2) linear control around a nonlinear baseline libration orbit near L***2*** is adequate for the TPF Mission.

Simulation of formation flight near Lagrange Points for the TPF Mission

The formation flight problem near the Lagrange points is of great interest. Recent work in the study of the feasibility of formation flight near the Lagrange points indicates that 1.) Formation flight near L2 is dynamically possible for the TPF Mission; and 2. Linear control around a nonlinear baseline libration orbit near L2 is adequate for the TPF Mission. This paper provides simulations which validate these conclusions.

Program on stimulating operational private sector use of Earth observation satellite information

Ideas for new businesses specializing in using remote sensing and computerized spatial data systems were developd. Each such business serves as an 'information middleman', buying raw satellite or aircraft imagery, processing these data, combining them in a computer system with customer-specific information, and marketing the resulting information products. Examples of the businesses the project designed are: (1) an agricultural facility site evaluation firm; (2) a mass media grocery price and supply analyst and forecaster; (3) a management service for privately held woodlots; (4) a brokerage for insulation and roofing contractors, based on infrared imagery; (5) an expanded real estate information service. In addition, more than twenty-five other commercially attractive ideas in agribusiness, forestry, mining, real estate, urban planning and redevelopment, and consumer information were created. The commercial feasibility of the five business was assessed. This assessment included market surveys, revenue projections, cost analyses, and profitability studies. The results show that there are large and enthusiastic markets willing to pay for the services these businesses offer, and that the businesses could operate profitably.
