Exploring DAOS as a Burst Buffer for a 100 Gbps DAQ Real-Time Streaming System

We present an experimental evaluation of a burst buffer for a real-time DAQ streaming system designed to transmit instrument data to remote data centers. The system is based on EJ-FAT, a load balancing system capable of Nx 100Gbps streams, distributing data from event sources to processing nodes. We explore applying the DAOS system as a burst buffer to serve a number of purposes: improve resiliency, elasticity and add new functions into the processing pipeline. In the evaluation a sender transmits events over a 100Gbps network to a receiver integrated with DAOS to store the reassembled events using DAOS APIs. We evaluate the system for possible bottlenecks and provide end-to-end evaluation with a burst buffer using DAOS storage abstractions. We show that a receiver node can support 38.1 Gbps. This proves the viability of our approach and allows us to extend this work to investigate scale-out properties and new streaming optimizations.

An Approach to Quantify Workload in a System of Agents

The role of humans in aviation and other domains continues to shift from manual control to automation monitoring. Studies have found that humans are often poorly suited for monitoring roles, and workload can easily spike in off-nominal situations. Current workload measurement tools, like NASA TLX, use human operators to assess their own workload after using a prototype system. Such measures are used late in the design process and can result in ex- pensive alterations when problems are discovered. Our goal in this work is to provide a quantitative workload measure for use early in the design process. We leverage research in human cognition to de ne metrics that can measure workload on belief-desire-intentions based multi-agent systems. These measures can alert designers to potential workload issues early in design. We demonstrate the utility of our approach by characterizing quantitative differences in the workload for a single pilot operations model compared to a traditional two pilot model.

Potential Effects of Health Care Policy Decisions on Physician Availability

Many regions in America are experiencing downward trends in the number of practicing physicians and the number of available physician hours, resulting in a worrisome decrease in the availability of health care services. Recent changes in American health care legislation may induce a rapid change in the demand for health care services, which in turn will result in a new supply-demand equilibrium . In this paper we develop a system dynamics model linking physician availability to health care demand and profitability. We use this model to explore scenarios based on different initial conditions and describe possible outcomes for a range of different policy decisions.

Common Metrics for Human-Robot Interaction

This paper describes an effort to identify common metrics for task-oriented human-robot interaction (HRI). We begin by discussing the need for a toolkit of HRI metrics. We then describe the framework of our work and identify important biasing factors that must be taken into consideration. Finally, we present suggested common metrics for standardization and a case study. Preparation of a larger, more detailed toolkit is in progress.
