Navigation of the Twin GRAIL Spacecraft into Science Formation at the Moon

On February 29, 2012 the twin NASA Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) spacecraft, Ebb and flow, achieved precise synchronized formation for collecting highly sensitive lunar gravity data. This was accomplished after performing a total of 27 propulsive maneuvers between the two spacecraft (13 on Ebb, 14 on Flow) over six months. Each 300 kg GRAIL spacecraft independently flew a 3.8-month, low-energy trajectory to reach the Moon after separation from the launch vehicle on September 10, 2011. The space craft were captured into 11.5 hr co- planar polar orbits after performing Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) maneuvers on New Years Eve (Dec 31, 2011) and New Years Day (Jan 1, 2012), respectively for Ebb, and Flow. Once captured, each spacecraft performed clusters of period reduction maneuvers to bring their orbit periods down to just less than 2 hrs. Finally, the orbiters we replaced into science formation by performing five strategic maneuvers (2 on Ebb, 3 on Flow). These maneuvers ensured 3 months of orbit life time with mean altitudes of 55 km and separations of 82-217 km by targeting the orbits' eccentricity vectors to specific locations. This paper will discuss the navigation strategy and performance of the twin GRAIL spacecraft from the September 10, 2011 launch through the end of the Prime Mission Science Phase in June 2012.

Flyby Error Analysis Based on Contour Plots for the Cassini Tour

The maneuver cancellation analysis consists of cost contour plots employed by the Cassini maneuver team. The plots are two-dimensional linear representations of a larger six-dimensional solution to a multi-maneuver, multi-encounter mission at Saturn. By using contours plotted with the dot product of vectors B and R and the dot product of vectors B and T components, it is possible to view the effects delta V on for various encounter positions in the B-plane. The plot is used in operations to help determine if the Approach Maneuver (ensuing encounter minus three days) and/or the Cleanup Maneuver (ensuing encounter plus three days) can be cancelled and also is a linear check of an integrated solution.

Cassini tour redesign for the Huygens mission

The Cassini spacecraft will arrive at Saturn in 2004 carrying the Huygens probe which will descend into the atmosphere of Saturn's moon Titan. An extra 32-day orbit has been inserted at the beginning of the tour, and the orbiter altitude has been increased during the probe delivery flyby. This paper will detail the changes to the tour.

Monte-carlo maneuver analysis for the microwave anisotropy probe

The results of this trajectory replication are presented, followed by the results of monte-carlo maneuver simulations. The results are subject to two important assumptions: that linearization is valid (as the software used for the monte-carlo simulation, LAMBIC, is based on a linearization of the trajectory about the nominal) and that the planned human-in-the-loop lunar targeting may be approximated by targeting to a fixed aimpoint.
