The proximity effect and critical field behavior of Re/Al bilayers

Abstract We report the perpendicular critical field H c 2 properties of disordered Re-Al bilayers via magneto-transport measurements. The bilayers consisted of a d Re = 3 nm bottom layer of Re and an upper Al layer with thickness varying between d Al = 0 − 3 nm. We find that in this range of Al thicknesses, the bilayer transition temperature T c increases with increasing Al thickness, although their monolayer counterparts have T c Re > T c Al . Furthermore, H c 2 of the bilayers has a local maximum at an Al coverage of 1.5 nm with a critical field that is 50% larger than that of the standalone 3 nm Re film. At higher Al thicknesses H c 2 drops rapidly but remains more than an order of magnitude greater that that of comparable thickness standalone Al film. Our data show that a thin, disordered Re under-layer can dramatically increase the magnetic field tolerance of the Al over-layer. This would allow one to retain the desirable chemical and metallurgical properties of Al without sacrificing high field compatibility in quantum circuits, such as topological qubit devices and superinductor circuits.

Multi-$\mathcal{k}$ magnetic structure and large anomalous Hall effect in candidate magnetic Weyl semimetal NdAlGe

Here, the magnetic structure, magnetoresistance (MR), and Hall effect of the noncentrosymmetric magnetic semimetal NdAlGe are investigated, revealing an unusual magnetic state and anomalous transport properties that are associated with the electronic structure of this compound. The magnetization and MR measurements are both highly anisotropic and indicate an Ising-like magnetic system. The magnetic structure is complex in that it involves two magnetic ordering vectors, including an incommensurate spin density wave and commensurate ferrimagnetic state in zero field. We have discovered a large anomalous Hall conductivity that reaches ≈430 Ω –1 cm –1 , implying that it originates from an intrinsic Berry curvature effect stemming from Weyl nodes found in the electronic structure. These electronic structure calculations indicate the presence of nested Fermi surface pockets with nesting wave vectors like the measured magnetic ordering wave vector and the presence of Weyl nodes in proximity to the Fermi surface. We associate the incommensurate magnetic structure with the large anomalous Hall response to be the result of the combination of Fermi surface nesting and the Berry curvature associated with Weyl nodes.

Correlated States of 2D Electrons near the Landau Level Filling ν = 1 / 7

The ground state of two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) at low Landau level filling factors ( ν ≲ 1 / 6 ) has long been a topic of interest and controversy in condensed matter. Following the recent breakthrough in the quality of ultrahigh-mobility GaAs 2DESs, we revisit this problem experimentally and investigate the impact of reduced disorder. In a GaAs 2DES sample with density n = 6.1 × 10 10 / cm 2 and mobility μ = 25 × 10 6 cm 2 / V s , we find a deep minimum in the longitudinal magnetoresistance ( R x x ) at ν = 1 / 7 when T ≃ 104 mK . There is also a clear sign of a developing minimum in R x x at ν = 2 / 13 . While insulating phases are still predominant when ν ≲ 1 / 6 , these minima strongly suggest the existence of fractional quantum Hall states at filling factors that comply with the Jain sequence ν = p / ( 2 m p ± 1 ) even in the very low Landau level filling limit. The magnetic-field-dependent activation energies deduced from the relation R x x ∝ e E A / 2 k T corroborate this view and imply the presence of pinned Wigner solid states when ν ≠ p / ( 2 m p ± 1 ) . Similar results are seen in another sample with a lower density, further generalizing our observations.

High Fermi velocities and small cyclotron masses in LaAlGe

Here, we report quantum oscillation measurements of LaAlGe, a Lorentz-violating type-II Weyl semimetal with tilted Weyl cones. Very small quasiparticle masses and very high Fermi velocities were detected at the Fermi surface. Whereas three main frequencies have been observed, the angular dependence of two Fermi surface sheets indicates possible two-dimensional (2D) character despite the absence of the 2D structural features such as van der Waals bonds. Such conducting states may offer a good platform for low-dimensional polarized spin current in magnetic RAlGe (R = Ce, Pr) materials.

Superconductivity in single crystals of ZrP 1.27 Se 0.73

Results are reported for single crystals of the PbFCl-type layered compound ZrP 1.27 Se 0.73 that were produced using the iodine vapor transport method. Electrical transport, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements reveal disordered metallic behavior and the occurrence of bulk superconductivity, with a transition temperature (T c ) of 7.1 K and an anisotropic orbitally limited upper critical field. 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance measurements provide additional microscopic information, where the line shape, Knight shift, and spin-lattice relaxation data are consistent with the superconductivity originating from the corrugated Zr-P(2c)/Se plane. This suggests that the superconductivity first forms in the corrugated plane and the bulk superconductivity eventually occurs via coupling between the square planar layers. These data also show that either there are multiple superconducting gaps or there is a single gap that does not fully open across the entire Fermi surface. Finally, these results clarify the superconducting state in this material and will enable further measurements that require single-crystal specimens.

Tuning the structural and antiferromagnetic phase transitions in UCr 2 Si 2 : Hydrostatic pressure and chemical substitution

Structural phase transitions in $\textit{f}$-electron materials have attracted sustained attention both for practical and basic science reasons, including the fact that they offer an environment to directly investigate relationships between structure and the $\textit{f}$-state. Here we present results for UCr 2 Si 2 , where structural (tetragonal → monoclinic) and antiferromagnetic phase transitions are seen at $T_S$ = 205 K and $T_N$ = 25 K, respectively. We also provide evidence for an additional second-order phase transition at $T_X$ = 280 K. We show that $T_X$, $T_S$, and $T_N$ respond in distinct ways to the application of hydrostatic pressure and Cr → Ru chemical substitution. In particular, hydrostatic compression increases the structural ordering temperature, eventually causes it to merge with $T_X$, and destroys the antiferromagnetism. In contrast, chemical substitution in the series UCr 2– x Ru x Si 2 suppresses both $T_S$ and $T_N$, causing them to approach zero temperature near $\textit{x}$ ≈ 0.16 and 0.08, respectively. The distinct $\textit{T–P}$ and ${T–x}$ phase diagrams are related to the evolution of the rigid Cr-Si and Si-Si substructures, where applied pressure semiuniformly compresses the unit cell, and Cr → Ru substitution results in uniaxial lattice compression along the tetragonal $\textit{c}$-axis and an expansion in the $\textit{ab}$-plane. These results in this work provide insights into an interesting class of strongly correlated quantum materials in which degrees of freedom associated with $\textit{f}$-electron magnetism, strong electronic correlations, and structural instabilities are readily controlled.

Three-dimensional Fermi surface and small effective masses in Mo 8 Ga 41

We report Fermi surface characteristics of Mo 8 Ga 41 , a two-gap superconductor with critical temperature T c ~10 K, obtained from quantum oscillation measurements. Four major frequencies have been observed with relatively small quastiparticle masses. Angular dependence of major frequencies indicates three-dimensional Fermi surface sheets. This argues for a relatively isotropic superconducting state and, given its relatively high T c , shows that a search for new materials in this class could be of interest for superconducting wire applications.
