Discovery of quantum phases in the Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu 2 (BO 3 ) 2 under extreme conditions of field and pressure

The 2-dimensional layered oxide material SrCu 2 (BO 3 ) 2 , long studied as a realization of the Shastry-Sutherland spin topology, exhibits a range of intriguing physics as a function of both hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field, with a still debated intermediate plaquette phase appearing at approximately 20 kbar and a possible deconfined critical point at higher pressure. Here, we employ a tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) technique to probe the behavior in the combined extreme conditions of high pressure, high magnetic field, and low temperature. We reveal an extensive phase space consisting of multiple magnetic analogs of the elusive supersolid phase and a magnetization plateau. In particular, a 10 x 2 supersolid and a 1/5 plateau, identified by infinite Projected Entangled Pair States (iPEPS) calculations, are found to rely on the presence of both magnetic and non-magnetic particles in the sea of dimer singlets. These states are best understood as descendants of the full-plaquette phase, the leading candidate for the intermediate phase of SrCu 2 (BO 3 ) 2

Toward tunable quantum transport and novel magnetic states in Eu 1– x Sr x Mn 1– z Sb 2 ( z < 0.05)

Magnetic semimetals are very promising for potential applications in novel spintronic devices. Nevertheless, realizing tunable topological states with magnetism in a controllable way is challenging. Here, we report novel magnetic states and the tunability of topological semimetallic states through the control of Eu spin reorientation in Eu 1–x Sr x Mn 1–z Sb 2 . Increasing the Sr concentration in this system induces a surprising reorientation of noncollinear Eu spins to the Mn moment direction and topological semimetallic behavior. The Eu spin reorientations to distinct collinear antiferromagnetic orders are also driven by the temperature/magnetic field and are coupled to the transport properties of the relativistic fermions generated by the 2D Sb layers. These results suggest that nonmagnetic element doping at the rare earth element site may be an effective strategy for generating topological electronic states and new magnetic states in layered compounds involving spatially separated rare earth and transition metal layers.

Polaronic Conductivity in Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 Single Crystals

We report that intrinsic 2D ferromagnetic semiconductors are an important class of materials for spin-charge conversion applications. Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 retains long-range magnetic order in the bilayer at cryogenic temperatures and shows complex magnetic interactions with considerable magnetic anisotropy. Here, a series of structural, magnetic, X-ray scattering, electronic, thermal transport and first-principles calculation studies are performed, which reveal that localized electronic charge carriers in Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 are dressed by the surrounding lattice and are involved in polaronic transport via hopping that is observed via magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This opens the possibility for manipulation of charge transport in Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 —based devices by electron–phonon- and spin–orbit coupling-based tailoring of polaron properties.

Quantum oscillations in the field-induced ferromagnetic state of MnBi 2-x Sb x Te 4

The intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 undergoes a metamagnetic transition in a c-axis magnetic field. It has been predicted that ferromagnetic MnBi2Te4 is an ideal Weyl semimetal with a single pair of Weyl nodes. Here we report measurements of quantum oscillations detected in the field-induced ferromagnetic phase of MnBi 2-x Sb x Te 4 , where Sb substitution tunes the majority carriers from electrons to holes. Single-frequency Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations were observed in a wide range of Sb concentrations (0.54≤x≤1.21). The evolution of the oscillation frequency and the effective mass shows reasonable agreement with the Weyl semimetal band structure of ferromagnetic MnBi 2 Te 4 predicted by density functional calculations. Intriguingly, the quantum oscillation frequency shows a strong temperature dependence, indicating that the electronic structure depends sensitively on magnetism.

Superstructures and Superconductivity Linked with Pd Intercalation in Nb 2 Pd x Se 5

Single crystals of Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 have been grown covering a broad range of palladium stoichiometries, from x = 0.68 to x = 0.95 (Pd2 occupancies 0.36 and 0.90 respectively). Miscibility gaps in the Pd stoichiometry range are related to superstructures resulting from staged filling and ordering of the partially filled Pd atom site (Pd2, Wyckoff site 2a). For Pd2 near 1/2 occupancy, a superstructure based on an incommensurate occupation wave with modulation along the monoclinic b-axis is identified. Here, a superconducting dome is found for Pd2 occupancies above 0.58, with maximum Tc for Pd2 occupancy of approximately 2/3. DFT calculations for the fully and 1/2 occupied Pd2 site show that Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 can be considered an intercalation compound for Pd2 occupancy above the minimum required for structural stability.

Néel-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic field–temperature phase diagram in the spin-1/2 rare-earth honeycomb compound YbCl 3

Most of the searches for Kitaev materials deal with 4 d / 5 d magnets with spin-orbit-coupled J = 1 / 2 local moments such as iridates and α - RuCl 3 . Here we propose the monoclinic YbCl 3 with a Yb 3 + honeycomb lattice for the exploration of Kitaev physics. We perform thermodynamic, a c susceptibility, angle-dependent magnetic torque, and neutron diffraction measurements on YbCl 3 single crystal. We find that the Yb 3 + ion exhibits a Kramers doublet ground state that gives rise to an effective spin J eff = 1 / 2 local moment. Additionally, the compound exhibits short-range magnetic order below 1.20 K, followed by a long-range Néel-type antiferromagnetic order at 0.60 K, below which the ordered Yb 3 + spins lie in the a c plane with an angle of 16(11) ° away from the a axis. These orders can be suppressed by in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields at around 6 and 10 T, respectively. Moreover, the Néel temperature varies nonmonotonically under the out-of-plane magnetic fields, suggesting a reduced spin dimensionality. Finally, together with the strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy and the reduced order moment 0.8(1) μ B at 0.25 K, all indicate that YbCl 3 could be a two-dimensional spin system to proximate the Kitaev physics.

Exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect due to anticrossing of spin-split bands in the antiferromagnetic half-Heusler compound TbPtBi

We have investigated the magnetotransport properties and the topological electronic structure of the half-Heusler compound TbPtBi. Our experiments reveal an exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the canted antiferromagnetic state of TbPtBi with the anomalous Hall angle reaching ~0.68–0.76, which is a few times larger than the previously reported record in GdPtBi. First-principles electronic structure and the associated anomalous Hall conductivity were computed in order to interpret the experimental results. Furthermore, our analysis shows that the AHE in TbPtBi does not originate from the Weyl points but that it is driven by the large net Berry curvature produced by the anticrossing of spin-split bands near the Fermi level in TbPtBi.

Evidence from transport measurements for YRh 6 Ge 4 being a triply degenerate nodal semimetal

We have investigated magnetotransport properties of YRh 6 Ge 4 , which was recently predicted to be a triply degenerate nodal semimetal. We find it exhibits remarkable signatures of a chiral anomaly, manifested by large negative longitudinal magnetoresistance, the quadratic field dependence of magnetoconductance and the planar Hall effect. Furthermore, we have also observed Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations in the magnetoresistivity measurements on this material. The analyses of the SdH data reveal two pointlike Fermi surfaces and these pockets are found to host nearly massless fermions. The small size of these Fermi pockets is in a good agreement with the theoretical prediction that the triply degenerate point in YRh 6 Ge 4 is much closer to the Fermi level than previously demonstrated triply degenerate nodal semimetals such as MoP and WC. These results suggest YRh 6 Ge 4 may serve as a model system to probe exotic properties of three-component fermions and understand their underlying physics.

Dirac fermions and flat bands in the ideal kagome metal FeSn

A kagome lattice of 3d transition metal ions is a versatile platform for correlated topological phases hosting symmetry-protected electronic excitations and magnetic ground states. However, the paradigmatic states of the idealized two-dimensional kagome lattice-Dirac fermions and flat bands-have not been simultaneously observed. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and de Haas-van Alphen quantum oscillations to reveal coexisting surface and bulk Dirac fermions as well as flat bands in the antiferromagnetic kagome metal FeSn, which has spatially decoupled kagome planes. Our band structure calculations and matrix element simulations demonstrate that the bulk Dirac bands arise from in-plane localized Fe-3d orbitals, and evidence that the coexisting Dirac surface state realizes a rare example of fully spin-polarized two-dimensional Dirac fermions due to spin-layer locking in FeSn. Finally, the prospect to harness these prototypical excitations in a kagome lattice is a frontier of great promise at the confluence of topology, magnetism and strongly correlated physics.
