Lattice QCD for Neutrino Physics

Neutrinos are the most poorly understood particles in the Standard Model but may be key to understanding fundamental mysteries of the universe, including matter-antimatter asymmetry. Most experiments to improve our knowledge of neutrinos depend on neutrino interactions with hadronic matter and therefore rely on a solid theoretical understanding of these interactions. Lattice QCD offers a first-principles, model-independent method of analyzing hadronic systems and their responses to external currents, including the electroweak currents induced by neutrino interactions. In this talk, I will discuss my work on using lattice QCD to understand the hadronic systems needed for both neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments and the impact of this work on neutrino physics.

Towards Lattice QCD Calculations of Pion Production

Neutrino oscillation experiments require accurate reconstructions of neutrino energies, which depend in part on a theoretical understanding of the axial N→Δ transition form factors. A lattice QCD study of this transition will require construction of all hadronic states with energies up to mΔ, which at the physical point includes Nπ and Nππ. Building interpolating operators from sparse grids at the source and sink is a versatile method that allows construction of a wide range of diagram topologies and has successfully been used in other multi-hadron calculations. We will discuss application of this method to nucleon-pion systems and present preliminary results.

Update on the gradient flow scale on the 2+1+1 HISQ ensembles

We report on the ongoing effort of improving the determination of the gradient flow scale on the (2+1+1)-flavor HISQ ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration. We compute the scales $\sqrt{t_0}/a$ and $w_0/a$ with the Wilson and Symanzik flow using three discretizations for the action density: clover, Wilson and tree-level Symanzik improved. For the absolute scale setting, we intend to employ the $\Omega$-baryon mass, but are also using the pion decay constant while the $\Omega$-mass calculations are in progress.

Nuclear Matrix Elements for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay from Lattice QCD

Neutrinoless double-beta decay (0vbb) is a hypothetical nuclear decay that is only possible if the neutrino is a Majorana fermion. Experimental searches for this process with ever-increasing sensitivity have placed strong constraints on the 0vbb half-lives of relevant isotopes. Relating these experimental half-lives to the underlying particle physics -- the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino -- requires understanding of the nuclear matrix elements for the transition. These matrix elements can be computed within a nuclear effective field theory framework, but input from lattice QCD is necessary to constrain low-energy constants relevant for the decay. This talk will discuss calculations of these matrix elements using lattice QCD and the implications for determination of nuclear EFT parameters.

Lattice QCD Constraints on the Fourth Mellin Moment of the Pion Light Cone Distribution Amplitude using the HOPE method

The light-cone distribution amplitude (LCDA) of the pion contains information about the parton momentum carried by the quarks and is an important theoretical input for various predictions of exclusive processes at high energy, including the pion electromagnetic form factor. Progress towards constraining the fourth Mellin moment of the LCDA using the heavy-quark operator product expansion (HOPE) method is presented.

Nucleon-Pion Spectroscopy from Sparsened Correlators

Neutrino oscillation experiments require accurate reconstructions of neutrino energies, which depend in part on a theoretical understanding of the axial $N\rightarrow\Delta$ transition form factors. A lattice QCD study of this transition will require construction of all hadronic states with energies up to $m_\Delta$, which at the physical point includes $N\pi$ and $N\pi\pi$. Building interpolating operators from sparse grids at the source and sink is a versatile method that allows construction of a wide range of diagram topologies and has successfully been used in other multi-hadron calculations. We will discuss application of this method to nucleon-pion systems and present preliminary results.

Progress in calculation of the fourth Mellin moment of the pion light-cone distribution amplitude using the HOPE method

The pion light-cone distribution amplitude (LCDA) is a central non-perturbative object of interest for the calculation of high-energy exclusive processes in quantum chromodynamics. This article describes the progress in the lattice QCD calculation of the fourth Mellin moment of the pion LCDA using a heavy-quark operator product expansion (HOPE).
