Non-Centrosymmetric Sr 2 IrO 4 Obtained Under High Pressure

Sr 2 IrO 4 with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Hubbard repulsion (U) hosts Mott insulating states. The similar crystal structure, magnetic and electronic properties, particularly the d-wave gap observed in Sr 2 IrO 4 enhanced the analogies to cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductor, La 2 CuO 4 . The incomplete analogy was due to the lack of broken inversion symmetry phases observed in Sr 2 IrO 4 . Here, under high pressure and high temperature conditions, we report a non-centrosymmetric Sr 2 IrO 4 . The crystal structure and its noncentrosymmetric character were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM). The magnetic characterization confirms the Ir 4+ with $\textit{S}$ = 1/2 at low temperature in Sr 2 IrO 4 with magnetic ordering occurred at around 86 K, where a larger moment is observed than the ambient pressure Sr 2 IrO 4 . Moreover, the resistivity measurement shows three-dimensional Mott variable-range hopping existed in the system. Further, this non-centrosymmetric Sr 2 IrO 4 phase appears to be a unique material to offer further understanding of high-$T_c$ superconductivity.

Creating Functional Oxynitride–Silicon Interfaces and SrNbO 2 N Thin Films for Photoelectrochemical Applications

Photoelectrochemical performance dependence upon absorption length, carrier diffusion length, and surface area of an oxynitride photoabsorber is investigated. How best to fabricate optical-quality thin films of bandgap-tunable oxynitrides is also discussed. We targeted the stoichiometric compound SrNbO 2 N as an optimal wide-bandgap photoabsorber (1.9 eV) for use with silicon (1.1 eV) in a tandem structure photoelectrochemical cell. Preparation of perovskite oxynitrides at high-temperature as isolated powders is often straightforward, but it is difficult to integrate them as thin films in tandem junction devices with low-temperature materials. Here we develop the first method to prepare optical-quality SrNbO 2 N thin-films of tunable thickness and roughness on single-crystal silicon substrate. This achievement required an interfacial layer of ultra-thin TaN to be used as a barrier to reduce the inter-diffusion of silicon and oxygen during oxynitride syn-thesis. We produced a variety of SrNbO 2 N film thicknesses (20-440 nm) on n + -Si(100) surfaces. Roughness factor (0.14-21) scaled with thickness. The intrinsic photoelectrochemical activity of these devices was evaluated using a low-barrier sacrificial electron donor. Photocurrent density and photovoltage revealed a significant (and non-linear) dependence on film thickness and roughness. Furthermore, absorption length, carrier diffusion length, and surface area were each found to play key roles. Balancing these is required for optimally performing devices.

A Polar Magnetic and Insulating Double Corundum Oxide: Mn2MnSbO6 with Ordered Mn(II) and Mn(III) Ions

A new magnetic insulator Mn2MnSbO6 with a polar crystal structure and an ordered Mn2+ and Mn3+ arrangement was synthesized under a high pressure of 7.5 GPa and 1300 degrees C. The crystal structure of Mn2MnSbO6, investigated by synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, was found to be isomorphous with that of Ni3TeO6-type, space group R3. The non-centrosymmetric structure was confirmed by the second-harmonic generation measurements. The X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy measurement confirmed the nominal oxidation states of Mn22+Mn3+SbO6. Magnetic measurements indicate that Mn2MnSbO6 orders antiferromagnetically below 44 K and undergoes a field-induced spin-flop transition at 5 K. First-principles calculations indicate an antiferromagnetic ground state with up/up/up/down/down/down (uuuddd) spin configuration of the six crystallographically unique Mn ions in the c-axis doubled magnetic structure. The density functional theory calculations also substantiate the experimentally observed charge ordering of the Mn2+/Mn3+ ions and the insulating behavior due to a bandgap of 0.52 eV. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first double corundum oxide containing Jahn-Teller active Mn3+ ions.

Spin Reorientation in Antiferromagnetic Layered FePt 5 P

FePt 5 P, a substitutional variant of the anti-CeCoIn 5 structure type in the space group P4/mmm, was synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state method and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. FePt 5 P contains layers of FePt 12 clusters formed by magnetically active Fe and heavy Pt with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC); the layers are separated by P atoms. The various Fe–Pt distances in FePt 12 clusters generate complex magnetic orders in FePt 5 P. According to temperature-dependent magnetic and specific heat measurements, FePt 5 P shows a stripe-type antiferromagnetic order at T N ≈ 90 K, which is also confirmed by resistivity measurements. Furthermore, a spin reorientation occurs at ~74 and ~68 K in and out of the ab plane based on the specific heat measurements. The temperature-dependent neutron powder diffraction patterns demonstrate the antiferromagnetic order in FePt 5 P, and the spins orientate up to 58.4° with respect to the c axis at 10 K. First-principles calculations of FePt 5 P show the band splitting at the Fermi level by strong SOC and the s–d hybridization between P and Fe/Pt electrons enhances the structural stability and affects the magnetic ordering.

Defect-engineered room-temperature ferromagnetism in quasi-two-dimensional nitrided CoTa 2 O 6

Thermal ammonolysis of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) CoTa 2 O 6 yields the O 2– /N 3– and anionic vacancy-ordered Co 2+ $Ta^{5+}_{2}$O 6–x N 2x/3 $\square$ x/3 (x $\leqslant$ 0.15), which exhibits a transition from antiferromagnetism to defect-engineered above-room-temperature ferromagnetism. First-principles calculations reveal that the origin of ferromagnetism is a particular CoO 5 N configuration with N located at Wyckoff position 8j, which breaks mirror symmetry about the ab plane. A pressure-induced electronic phase transition is also predicted at ~24.5 GPa, accompanied by insulator-to-metal transition and magnetic moment vanishing.

A combinatory ferroelectric compound bridging simple ABO 3 and A-site-ordered quadruple perovskite

The simple ABO 3 and A-site-ordered AA' 3 B 4 O 12 perovskites represent two types of classical perovskite functional materials. There are well-known simple perovskites with ferroelectric properties, while there is still no report of ferroelectricity due to symmetry breaking transition in A-site-ordered quadruple perovskites. Here we report the high pressure synthesis of an A-site-ordered perovskite PbHg 3 Ti 4 O 12 , the only known quadruple perovskite that transforms from high-temperature centrosymmetric paraelectric phase to low-temperature non-centrosymmetric ferroelectric phase. The coordination chemistry of Hg 2+ is changed from square planar as in typical A-site-ordered quadruple perovskite to a rare stereo type with 8 ligands in PbHg 3 Ti 4 O 12 . Thus PbHg 3 Ti 4 O 12 appears to be a combinatory link from simple ABO 3 perovskites to A-site-ordered AA' 3 Ti 4 O 12 perovskites, sharing both displacive ferroelectricity with former and structure coordination with latter. This is the only example so far showing ferroelectricity due to symmetry breaking phase transition in AA' 3 B 4 O 12 -type A-site-ordered perovskites, and opens a direction to search for ferroelectric materials.

Ambient and High Pressure CuNiSb 2 : Metal-Ordered and Metal-Disordered NiAs-Type Derivative Pnictides

The mineral Zlatogorite, CuNiSb 2 , was synthesized in the laboratory for the first time by annealing elements at ambient pressure (CuNiSb 2 -AP). Rietveld refinement of synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data indicates that CuNiSb 2 -AP crystallizes in the NiAs-derived structure ( P 3 m 1, #164) with Cu and Ni ordering. The structure consists of alternate NiSb 6 and CuSb 6 octahedral layers via face-sharing. The formation of such structure instead of metal disordered NiAs-type structure ( P 6 3 / mm c, #194) is validated by the lower energy of the ordered phase by first-principle calculations. Interatomic crystal orbital Hamilton population, electron localization function, and charge density analysis reveal strong Ni-Sb, Cu-Sb, and Cu-Ni bonding and long weak Sb-Sb interactions in CuNiSb 2 -AP. The magnetic measurement indicates that CuNiSb 2 -AP is Pauli paramagnetic. First-principle calculations and experimental electrical resistivity measurements reveal that CuNiSb 2 -AP is a metal. The low Seebeck coefficient and large thermal conductivity suggest that CuNiSb 2 is not a potential thermoelectric material. Single crystals were grown by chemical vapor transport. The high pressure sample (CuNiSb 2 -8 GPa) was prepared by pressing CuNiSb 2 -AP at 700 °C and 8 GPa. However, the structures of single crystal and CuNiSb 2 -8 GPa are best fit with a disordered metal structure in the P 3 m 1 space group, corroborated by transmission electron microscopy.

A Pressure-Induced Inverse Order–Disorder Transition in Double Perovskites

Chemical intuition tells us that pressure increases ordering in most known materials. The discovery of pressure-induced disorder in the double perovskites Y 2 CoIrO 6 and Y 2 CoRuO 6 , which is reported by Z. Deng, C.-J. Kang, C. Jin, M. Greenblatt, and co-workers in their Research Article on page 8240, is in contrast to traditional theories of order–disorder mechanisms and calls for reconsideration of pressure effects in solid state sciences.

A Pressure‐Induced Inverse Order–Disorder Transition in Double Perovskites

Abstract Given the consensus that pressure improves cation ordering in most of known materials, a discovery of pressure‐induced disordering could require recognition of an order–disorder transition in solid‐state physics/chemistry and geophysics. Double perovskites Y 2 CoIrO 6 and Y 2 CoRuO 6 polymorphs synthesized at 0, 6, and 15 GPa show B‐site ordering, partial ordering, and disordering, respectively, accompanied by lattice compression and crystal structure alteration from monoclinic to orthorhombic symmetry. Correspondingly, the long‐range ferrimagnetic ordering in the B‐site ordered samples are gradually overwhelmed by B‐site disorder. Theoretical calculations suggest that unusual unit‐cell compressions under external pressures unexpectedly stabilize the disordered phases of Y 2 CoIrO 6 and Y 2 CoRuO 6 .

High-Pressure, High-Temperature Synthesis and Characterization of Polar and Magnetic LuCrWO 6

We report a new polar and magnetic oxide, LuCrWO 6 , was synthesized under high pressure (6 GPa) and high temperature (1673 K). LuCrWO 6 is isostructural with the previously reported polar YCrWO 6 (SG: Pna21, no. 33). The ordering of CrO 6 and WO 6 octahedra in the edge-shared dimers induce the polar structure. The effective size of rare earth, Ln cation does not seem to affect the symmetry of LnCrWO 6 . Second harmonic generation measurements of LuCrWO 6 confirmed the noncentrosymmetric character and strong piezoelectric domains are observed from piezoresponse force microscopy at room temperature. LuCrWO 6 exhibits antiferromagnetic behavior, T N , of ~18 K with a Weiss temperature of -30.7 K.
