Medium-resolution far-ultraviolet spectroscopy of PKS 2155-304

Using the Berkeley spectrometer of the Orbiting Retrievable Far and Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer (ORFEUS) we observed the 87-117 nm UV spectrum of the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 with about 0.5 A resolution. In addition to the expected interstellar lines we detected higher quantum number counterparts of the intergalactic Lyman alpha lines discovered earlier with IUE and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in the direction of PKS 2155-304. The Lyman discontinuities indicate for three of the redshifted clouds a combined H I column density of 2-5 x 10(exp 16)/sq cm, while the column density for another cloud appears to be well below 5 x 10(exp 15)/sq cm. No siginificant O VI absorption in the galactic halo toward PKS 2155-304 could be detected from our data. Assuming that saturation effects are negligible for these weak features, we obtain for the O VI column density toward PKS 2155-304 a 3 sigma upper limit of 2.7 x 10(exp 14)/sq cm.

SUMER: Temperatures, densities, and velocities in the outer solar atmosphere

The SUMER (Solar Ultraviolet Measurement of Emitted Radiation) instrumentation that will be mounted on the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft is in development. It has some capability of improving the solar angular resolution and the spectral resolution already obtained in the far UV to the extreme UV, corresponding to the temperature range between 10,000 and a few 1,000,000 K. Some insights into the SUMER spectrometer, developed to study the dynamics and to infer temperatures and densities of the low corona and the chromosphere-corona transition zone in using the 50 to 160 nm wavelength range, are given. The SUMER scientific goals and the techniques used are outlined. The instrumentation and the expected performances are described. The way the observations can be conducted is emphasized and the operation of SUMER in coordination with other SOHO instrumentations and in cooperation with ground based observations is explained.

SUMER: Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation

The experiment Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) is designed for the investigations of plasma flow characteristics, turbulence and wave motions, plasma densities and temperatures, structures and events associated with solar magnetic activity in the chromosphere, the transition zone and the corona. Specifically, SUMER will measure profiles and intensities of Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lines emitted in the solar atmosphere ranging from the upper chromosphere to the lower corona; determine line broadenings, spectral positions and Doppler shifts with high accuracy, provide stigmatic images of selected areas of the Sun in the EUV with high spatial, temporal and spectral resolution and obtain full images of the Sun and the inner corona in selectable EUV lines, corresponding to a temperature from 10,000 to more than 1,800,000 K.

Far and extreme ultraviolet astronomy with ORFEUS

ORFEUS (Orbiting and Retrievable Far and Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer) is a 1 m normal incidence telescope for spectroscopic investigations of cosmic sources in the far and extreme ultraviolet spectral range. The instrument will be integrated into the freeflyer platform ASTRO-SPAS. ORFEUS-SPAS is scheduled with STS ENDEAVOUR in September 1992. We describe the telescope with its two spectrometer and their capabilities i.e., spectral range, resolution and overall sensitivity. The main classes of objects to be observed with the instrument are discussed and two examples of simulated spectra for the white dwarf HZ43 and an O9-star in LMC are shown.

SUMER: Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation

The SUMER (solar ultraviolet measurements of emitted radiation) experiment is described. It will study flows, turbulent motions, waves, temperatures and densities of the plasma in the upper atmosphere of the Sun. Structures and events associated with solar magnetic activity will be observed on various spatial and temporal scales. This will contribute to the understanding of coronal heating processes and the solar wind expansion. The instrument will take images of the Sun in EUV (extreme ultra violet) light with high resolution in space, wavelength and time. The spatial resolution and spectral resolving power of the instrument are described. Spectral shifts can be determined with subpixel accuracy. The wavelength range extends from 500 to 1600 angstroms. The integration time can be as short as one second. Line profiles, shifts and broadenings are studied. Ratios of temperature and density sensitive EUV emission lines are established.

Far-ultraviolet and optical spectrophotometry of X-ray selected Seyfert galaxies

Five X-ray selected Seyfert galaxies were examined via near-simultaneous far-ultraviolet and optical spectrophotometry in an effort to test models for excitation of emission lines by X-ray and ultraviolet continuum photoionization. The observed Ly-alpha/H-beta ratio in the present sample averages 22, with an increase found toward the high-velocity wings of the H lines in the spectrum of at least one of the Seyfert I nuclei. It is suggested that Seyfert galaxies with the most high-velocity gas exhibit the highest Ly-alpha/H-beta ratios at all velocities in the line profiles, and that sometimes this ratio may be highest for the highest velocity material in the broad-line clouds. Since broad-lined objects are least affected by Ly-alpha trapping effects, they have Ly-alpha/H-beta ratios much closer to those predicted by early photoionization calculations.

Observations of the high latitude far ultraviolet background in the 1040-1080 A band

Observations of the far ultraviolet background at high galactic latitudes in a band from 1040-1080 A were carried out with a rocket-borne 1 meter telescope and a 0.23 square degree field of view photometer. The photometer had a sharp cutoff shortward of 1040 A and a sensitivity at hydrogen Lyman alpha of a factor of 0.0001 below its sensitivity at 1060 A. A second photometer monitored geocoronal hydrogen Lyman alpha emission enabling an accurate evaluation of counts due to this background. The hydrogen Lyman alpha flux contributed only 17 percent of the total counts detected in the cosmic background detector. An upper limit to the emission in the 1040-1080 A band of 9700 photons per sq cm-s-sr-A is obtained. This upper limit is compared with previous measurements and theoretical predictions.

Rocket observations of the diffuse ultraviolet background

The objective of the experiment reported here was to obtain additional information on the absolute intensity level and spatial variation of the diffuse ultraviolet background and thereby gain insight into the origin of this radiation. The experiment used three ultraviolet sensitive photometers placed in the focal plane of a 95-cm, f/2.8 normal incidence telescope flown on board an Aries sounding rocket. The measured intensities clearly refute the hypothesis of an isotropic background, the intensities of the high galactic latitude being definitely lower than the intensities seen at intermediate latitudes. Moreover, the count rates in all three channels along the slow scan exhibit local enhancements as well as an overall trend. In general, the spatial variations exhibited by the data correlate with the line of sight of neutral hydrogen column density as determined from 21-cm radio observations. This fact demonstrates that there is a galactic component to the diffuse ultraviolet radiation field.

Experimental limits of the extreme ultraviolet background

Photometric observations of the diffuse extreme ultraviolet background with two photometers having bandpasses of 750-940 A and 1040-1080 A are reported. The payload, which was flown aboard an ARIES sounding rocket in June 1982, is described, including the electron detectors, filters, and calibration. The operation of the probe during the experiment, including its motions, are described. The primary experiment involved spectroscopic observation of the hot white dwarf HZ43. The photometer count rate is shown and the measurements of the diffuse background are compared with theoretical predictions. Despite the lower limits obtained using a narrowband detector, the measurements are not sensitive enough to draw any relevant astrophysical conclusions.

The interstellar spectrum of the supernova 1980k in NGC 6946

Bright supernovae in external galaxies offer a rare opportunity to probe the intervening interstellar media over very extended path-lengths, including the disk and halo of the Galaxy and the parent galaxy of the supernova. SN 1980k was discovered in NGC 6946 on 1980 October 29. In the first month after discovery, high resolution optical and ultraviolet observations were obtained to exploit the supernova as a probe of the intervening interstellar media. The obtained data are discussed. In the spectra, absorption lines were observed of Mg I, Mg II, Fe II, Mn II, Ca II and Na I. The absorption lines are attributed to the intervening interstellar media distributed over the very extended line of sight sampled, of order 7 Mpc. These lines are wider and stronger than any previously measured in the quiescent interstellar gas in the halo and disk of the Milky Way and of external galaxies

MAGELLAN: High resolution spectroscopy at FUV and EUV wavelengths

The aim of ESA's MAGELLAN mission is to provide high resolution spectra of celestial sources down to sixteenth magnitude over the extreme ultraviolet wavelength range (between 50 and 140 nm). This range extends from studies of interstellar matter in the disc and halo of this and other galaxies, to stellar envelopes, hot and evolved stars, clusters, intergalactic matter, nuclei of galaxies, quasars, and, finally, planets and satellites. The instrument has a nonconventional optical design using only one reflecting surface; a high groove density concave grating collects the star light, diffracts it and focuses its spectrum into a bidimensional windowless detector operated in a photon counting mode. The slitless configuration provides the spectra of all the sources (point like and extended) in the field of view of the grating. This field of view is limited by a grid collimator to reduce the diffuse background, the stray light and the probability of overlapping spectra in crowded fields.

The UV emission line spectrum of NGC 6572

Ultraviolet spectra of the medium excitation planetary nebula NGC 6572 were obtained with IUE both in the low and in the high resolution mode. These spectra reveal a superposition of emission lines arising in the expanding atmosphere of the central star, evidenced e.g., by their P Cygni profiles, and features arising in the planetary nebula proper. The latter were analyzed in order to determine C, N, O abundances.

Development of a 1m-normal-incidence-EUV-Telescope

A brief description is given of the 1m-EUV-Telescope and its focal plane instrumentation, namely an EUV spectrometer and six EUV/FUV photometers. The telescope is scheduled for launch on an Aries rocket on June 17, 1982. The principal goals are the white dwarf HZ43 and a photometric scan across the sky in an area of the sky where 21 cm line observations reveal a steep density gradient. The optical bench of the telescope is a cylinder made of a graphite epoxy compound. Despite its low specific weight, the bench shows an excellent mechanical performance, with an elasticity modulus of approximately 70,000 N/cu mm. It is pointed out that by carefully combining layers with different winding angles of the carbon fiber, the thermal expansion along the cylinder axis is almost negligible, even under severe thermal loads

IUE observations of the interstellar medium

Results from a preliminary study of interstellar absorption lines in the spectra of the three stars HD149757, HD93521 and HD153919, observed by the IUE during its commissioning phase are presented. They demonstrate the capabilities of the IUE for interstellar research. Results from a preliminary study of the emission line spectrum of the planetary nebula NGC 7027 are outlined and used to study its interstellar reddening.
