Nonlinear MHD interactions in some solar coronal structures

The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) interactions of solar coronal fast shock waves of flare and/or nonflare origin with the boundaries of such structures like the streamer and the coronal hole are considered. These boundaries are treated as MHD tangential discontinuities (TD). Different parameters of the observed corona are used. The general case of oblique interaction is studied. It is shown that a fast shock wave is usually refracted as a fast shock wave inside the coronal streamer. But for a special case of the velocity shear across a TD a slow shock wave may be generated. On the contrary the shock wave is refracted inside the coronal hole, indeed as a slow shock wave. The significance of different effects due to the interaction of fast and slow shock waves with the coronal magnetic field is noticed, especially at the time of coronal mass ejection (CME). Thus slow shock waves may help to 'open' the coronal magnetic field, and fast shock waves - to 'close' it. It is also shown, that an oblique fast MHD coronal shock wave may trigger an instability at the boundary of a streamer considered as a TD. It might have a relation with the observed abrupt process of disappearance of the streamer's boundary in the solar corona.

The variety of MHD shock waves interactions in the solar wind flow

Different types of nonlinear shock wave interactions in some regions of the solar wind flow are considered. It is shown, that the solar flare or nonflare CME fast shock wave may disappear as the result of the collision with the rotational discontinuity. By the way the appearance of the slow shock waves as the consequence of the collision with other directional discontinuity namely tangential is indicated. Thus the nonlinear oblique and normal MHD shock waves interactions with different solar wind discontinuities (tangential, rotational, contact, shock and plasmoidal) both in the free flow and close to the gradient regions like the terrestrial magnetopause and the heliopause are described. The change of the plasma pressure across the solar wind fast shock waves is also evaluated. The sketch of the classification of the MHD discontinuities interactions, connected with the solar wind evolution is given.

Interactions of oblique interplanetary discontinuities and their manifestations during STIP intervals 15-19

The generation of slow shock waves as the result of the interaction of Alfven discontinuities with solar wind contact surfaces is considered. The latter are taken to be the boundaries of proton and alpha-particle concentration inhomogeneities. It is found that the intensity of the Alfven discontinuity may be increased as the result of its interaction with the more dense plasma. The converse (i.e., decrease of the Alfven discontinuity's intensity following interaction with a less dense plasma) is also indicated. Also discussed is the generation of a magnetic cloud as the result of the interaction of a quasi-parallel Alfven discontinuity with a dense plasma contact surface. It is shown that the (solar-generated) Alfven discontinuity may then be transformed into non-flare fast and slow shock waves as the result of this interaction. Thus, it is indicated that some fast shock waves in the solar wind may have a nonsolar origin.
