Scaling behavior of low-temperature orthorhombic domains in the prototypical high-temperature superconductor La 1.875 Ba 0.125 CuO 4

Structural symmetry breaking and recovery in condensed-matter systems are closely related to exotic physical properties such as superconductivity (SC), magnetism, spin density waves, and charge density waves (CDWs). The interplay between different order parameters is intricate and often subject to intense debate, as in the case of CDW order and superconductivity. In La 1.875 Ba 0.125 CuO 4 (LBCO), the low-temperature structural domain walls are hypothesized as nanometer-scale pinning sites for the CDWs. Coherent x-ray diffraction techniques have been employed here to visualize the domain structures associated with these symmetry changes directly during phase transition. We have pushed Bragg coherent diffractive imaging (BCDI) into the cryogenic regime where most phase transitions in quantum materials reside. Utilizing BCDI, we image the structural evolution of LBCO microcrystal samples during the high-temperature tetragonal to low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO) phase transition. Our results show the formation of LTO domains close to the transition temperature and how the domain size decreases with temperature. In conclusion, the number of domains follows the secondary order parameter (or orthorhombic strain) measurement with a critical exponent that is consistent with the three-dimensional universality class.

Photon energy and polarization-dependent electronic structure of Cr-doped Bi 2 Se 3

In this article, we report a comparative study of the electronic structure of Cr-doped and pristine Bi 2 Se 3 . Circular dichroism and photon-energy-dependent angle-resolved photoemission experiments were performed. Even though the surface states seen on the Cr-doped samples are gapped, they exhibit strong circular dichroism, for which we provide its origin in accordance with the nontrivial band structure of the bulk. We note the surface electronic structure measurements with linear and circular polarized light show signatures that the orbital composition of the surface states is changed with Cr doping. Our observations not only provide further spectroscopic information about topological materials, but also promotes an alternative experimental tool to control their spin-orbital texture.

Disappearance of Superconductivity Due to Vanishing Coupling in the Overdoped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ

In cuprate superconductors, superconductivity is accompanied by a ‘plethora of orders’, and phenomena that complicate our understanding of superconductivity in these materials. Prominent in the underdoped regime, these orders weaken or vanish with overdoping. Here, we approach the superconducting phase from the more conventional overdoped side. We present angle-resolve photoemission spectroscopy studies of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ , cleaved and annealed in ozone to increase the doping all the way to the non-superconducting phase. In this work, we show that the mass renormalizationin the antinodal region of the Fermi surface, associated with the structure in the quasiparticle self-energy, that possibly reflects the pairing, weakens with doping and completely disappears precisely where superconductivity disappears the evidence that in the overdoped regime, superconductivity is determined by the coupling strength. A doping dependence and an abrupt disappearance above the transition temperature eliminate phononic mechanism of the observed renormalization and identify the onset of spin-fluctuations as its likely origin.
