Fundamental Neutron Physics: Theory and Analysis

The goal of the proposed research is the study of the possible manifestations of new physics beyond the Standard model in fundamental neutron physics, with emphasis on fundamental symmetries and "exotic'' interactions. The main part of the research will be focused on theoretical support of the search for Time Reversal Invariance Violation (TRIV) in neutron nuclei scattering. The existence of our universe, and the prevalence of matter over antimatter, requires TRIV (the impossibility of going from the past to the future). However, the source of TRIV in the Standard model is not strong enough to explain why our universe exists. Thus, the observation of large TRIV effects will be a clear signal of new physics. The proposed research topics include calculations of Parity Violating (PV) and TRIV effects in neutron nuclei scattering on different targets, and the study of the possible manifestations of new physics in neutron-decays, neutron-antineutron oscillations, and in interactions of ultra-cold neutrons with nuclei. This research will provide theoretical support to the ongoing experimental programs related to the search for TRIV in neutron scattering at Los Alamos National Laboratory and J-PARC (Japan), and will contribute in the efforts in searching for new physics in fundamental neutron physics experiments at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and at other national and international neutron research centers.

A Possible Neutron-Antineutron Oscillation Experiment at PF1B at the Institut Laue Langevin

We consider a possible neutron–antineutron ($n-\overline{n}$) oscillation experiment at the PF1B instrument at Institut Laue Langevin. It can improve the best existing constraint on the transition rate and also allow the testing of the methods and instrumentation which would be needed for a later larger-scale experiment at ESS. The main gain factors over the most competitive experiment, performed earlier at PF1 instrument at ILL, are: a more intense neutron beam and a new operating mode based on coherent n and $\overline{n}$ mirror reflections. The installation of such an experiment would need a temporary replacement of the existing ballistic neutron guide by a specially designed n/$\overline{n}$ guide with a gradually increasing cross section and a specially selected coating as well as the development and construction of an advanced $\overline{n}$ annihilation detector with a high efficiency and low background. The overall gain factor could reach up to an order of magnitude and depends on the chosen experiment configuration.

Fundamental Neutron Physics: Theory and Analysis

The research topic of the project focus on the theoretical study of the possibility to search for manifestations of new physics beyond the Standard model in fundamental neutron physics, with emphasis on fundamental symmetries and "exotic'' interactions. The mail goals concentrate on the search for Time Reversal Invariance Violation (TRIV) in neutron nuclei scattering, and on possible manifestations of new physics in neutron-antineutron oscillations and their interactions with nuclei. Theoretical methods for analysis and interpretations of TRIV parameters in neutron scattering with the possible background interactions, and for unambiguous separation of the effects related to manifestations of new physics have been developed. The obtained results will be applied for the development of experimental programs in fundamental neutron physics at the Spallation Neutron Sources (SNS) in USA, Japan, and Europe.

Neutron spin dynamics in polarized targets

We present neutron elastic scattering amplitude for arbitrary polarized target in irreducible spherical tensor representation. Here, the general approach for the description of neutron spin dynamics for the propagation trough the medium with an arbitrary polarization is discussed in a relation to the search for time reversal invariance violation in neutron scattering.
