Pre-Launch Algorithm and Data Format for the Level 1 Calibration Products for the EOS AM-1 Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) radiometric calibration product is described for the thermal emissive and the reflective solar bands. Specific sensor design characteristics are identified to assist in understanding how the calibration algorithm software product is designed. The reflected solar band software products of radiance and reflectance factor both are described. The product file format is summarized and the MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST) Homepage location for the current file format is provided.

Calibration of passive remote observing optical and microwave instrumentation; Proceedings of the Meeting, Orlando, FL, Apr. 3-5, 1991

Various papers on the calibration of passive remote observing optical and microwave instrumentation are presented. Individual topics addressed include: on-board calibration device for a wide field-of-view instrument, calibration for the medium-resolution imaging spectrometer, cryogenic radiometers and intensity-stabilized lasers for EOS radiometric calibrations, radiometric stability of the Shuttle-borne solar backscatter ultraviolet spectrometer, ratioing radiometer for use with a solar diffuser, requirements of a solar diffuser and measurements of some candidate materials, reflectance stability analysis of Spectralon diffuse calibration panels, stray light effects on calibrations using a solar diffuser, radiometric calibration of SPOT 23 HRVs, surface and aerosol models for use in radiative transfer codes. Also addressed are: calibrated intercepts for solar radiometers used in remote sensor calibration, radiometric calibration of an airborne multispectral scanner, in-flight calibration of a helicopter-mounted Daedalus multispectral scanner, technique for improving the calibration of large-area sphere sources, remote colorimetry and its applications, spatial sampling errors for a satellite-borne scanning radiometer, calibration of EOS multispectral imaging sensors and solar irradiance variability.

Earth Observing System instrument performance - Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer case study

The requirements for characterization and calibration of instruments for the Earth Observing System space segment are defined in terms of tracking the Level 1 data for a sensor. The data must be traceable over the 15 year program, and must provide corrections for radiometric, spectral and geometric coefficients which capture the combined design and performance characteristics of the sensor. These requirements are then developed for MODIS-N to identify a set of techniques which can be used in the laboratory, spacecraft integrator's facility and in-orbit. The in-orbit of the so-called reflectance and radiance methods are reviewed, and the cross-calibrations available between HIRIS and MODIS through these techniques are listed. A scheme for the use of all available tools for instrument performance is provided as a Figure showing an estimated time interval over which each tool is expected to be useful. The final calibration strategy and plan must be developed through the understanding of a useful strategy for each of these candidate mechanisms.

Radiance calibration of spherical integrators

Techniques for improving the knowledge of the radiance of large area spherical and hemispherical integrating energy sources have been investigated. Such sources are used to calibrate numerous aircraft and spacecraft remote sensing instruments. Comparisons are made between using a standard source based calibration method and a quantum efficient detector (QED) based calibration method. The uncertainty involved in transferring the calibrated values of the point source standard lamp to the extended source is estimated to be 5 to 10 percent. The use of the QED allows an improvement in the uncertainty to 1 to 2 percent for the measurement of absolute radiance from a spherical integrator source.

Role of calibration in remote sensing for the Earth Observing System

The management aspects of achieving the required calibration for the Earth Observing System (EOS) are discussed. The use of moon and on-board reference targets to determine the cross-calibration of various instruments making measurements of similar physical quantities is described. A case study employing the Shuttle Solar Backscatter UV Radiometer is presented.
