Shape of solitons in classically forbidden states - 'Lorentz expansion'

The shape of extended objects in classically forbidden regions is shown to undergo expansion analogous to Lorentz contraction of a relativistic body of finite velocities. The problem of two interacting Dirac particles moving in one dimension is solved explicitly and the results are generalized to soliton solutions of field theories. An estimate of the effect on tunneling rates is also given, including solitons in (CH)z.

Diffusion and localization of a particle in a periodic potential coupled to a dissipative environment

The phase diagram of a Hamiltonian which describes a particle moving in a periodic potential and coupled to an external heat bath has been analyzed in detail. By renormalization-group methods, it is proved that this system exhibits an unusual transition between diffusive behavior and a self-trapped phase. The dynamics along the transition line is shown to be integrable and the order parameter, the mobility, is computed exactly.

Friction and particle-hole pairs

The effect induced by dissipation on quantum phenomena has recently been considered, taking into account as a starting point a phenomenological Hamiltonian in which the environment is simulated by an appropriately chosen set of harmonic oscillators. It is found that this approach should be adequate to describe the low-energy behavior of a wide class of environments. The present investigation is concerned with an analysis of the case in which the environment is a gas (or liquid) of fermions, and the relevant low-energy excitations are particle-hole pairs. A study is conducted regarding the extent to which the quantum results obtained for harmonic oscillators are also valid in the considered situation. Linear-response theory is used to derive an effective action which describes the motion of an external particle coupled to a normal Fermi fluid.

Scaling relations in the equation of state, thermal expansion, and melting of metals

A simple and yet quite accurate prediction of volume as a function of pressure for metals and alloys is presented. Thermal expansion coefficients and melting temperatures are predicted by simple, analytic expressions and results compare favorably with experiment for a broad range of metals. All of these predictions are made possible by the discovery of universality in binding energy relations for metals.
