Combined Dimensional and Topology Optimization of Synchronous Machine Rotors Using a Material Density Interpolation Method
This article presents a magneto-structural combined dimensional and topology optimization technique for interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) and wound field synchronous machine (WFSM) rotors. Dimensional changes to the permanent magnet (PM) and rotor winding location or size are accomplished by interpolating or projecting a smoothed Heaviside rectangular function representing the presence of PM material onto the IPMSM rotor design domain mesh, whereas the presence of copper material for WFSM rotor is interpolated in the same manner. A density based Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) topology optimization approach is then used to vary the presence of electrical steel in mesh elements to form flux barriers around the PM. The proposed method enforces a defined shape for the PM without requiring the mesh in the design domain to be deformed. Four examples are presented to demonstrate the technique: Two flat bar IPMSM, one V-shaped IPMSM, and a WFSM. Here, a comparative study is performed on one of the flat bar IPMSMs using Metamodel of Optimal Prognosis (MOP) based method.
Low complexity domains of the nucleocapsid protein of SARS-CoV-2 form amyloid fibrils
The self-assembly of the Nucleocapsid protein (NCAP) of SARS-CoV-2 is crucial for its function. Computational analysis of the amino acid sequence of NCAP reveals low-complexity domains (LCDs) akin to LCDs in other proteins known to self-assemble as phase separation droplets and amyloid fibrils. Previous reports have described NCAP’s propensity to phase-separate. Here we show that the central LCD of NCAP is capable of both, phase separation and amyloid formation. Within this central LCD we identified three adhesive segments and determined the atomic structure of the fibrils formed by each. Those structures guided the design of G12, a peptide that interferes with the self-assembly of NCAP and demonstrates antiviral activity in SARS-CoV-2 infected cells. Our work, therefore, demonstrates the amyloid form of the central LCD of NCAP and suggests that amyloidogenic segments of NCAP could be targeted for drug development.

Magneto-Structural Combined Dimensional and Topology Optimization of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine Rotors
A magneto-structural combined dimensional and topology optimization approach for interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) rotor design is proposed using the Solid Isotropic Material Penalization (SIMP) density-based topology optimization method. This method optimizes the location and dimensions of the permanent magnets (PMs) embedded in the rotor, while simultaneously optimizing the lamination flux barriers using topology optimization. To allow for the location and dimensions of the PMs to change while retaining the same number of mesh elements and connectivity, the mesh must be deformed. Mesh deformation is accomplished using a Laplace smoothing technique. To increase the range of PM displacement and size changes, the non-PM areas of the rotor design domain are divided into sub-regions along whose boundaries the mesh nodes are redistributed also using a Laplace smoothing algorithm. Three examples of IPMSM rotor optimizations are presented to demonstrate the proposed approach.

Microfluidic Fabrication Techniques for High-Pressure Testing of Microscale Supercritical CO 2 Foam Transport in Fractured Unconventional Reservoirs
Pressure limitations of many microfluidic platforms have been a significant challenge in microfluidic experimental studies of fractured media. As a result, these platforms have not been fully exploited for direct observation of high-pressure transport in fractures. This work introduces microfluidic platforms that enable direct observation of multiphase flow in devices featuring surrogate permeable media and fractured systems. Such platforms provide a pathway to address important and timely questions such as those related to CO 2 capture, utilization and storage. This work provides a detailed description of the fabrication techniques and an experimental setup that may serve to analyze the behavior of supercritical CO 2 (scCO 2 ) foam, its structure and stability. Such studies provide important insights regarding enhanced oil recovery processes and the role of hydraulic fractures in resource recovery from unconventional reservoirs. This work presents a comparative study of microfluidic devices developed using two different techniques: photolithography/wet-etching/ thermal-bonding versus Selective Laser-induced Etching. Both techniques result in devices that are chemically and physically resistant and tolerant of high pressure and temperature conditions that correspond to subsurface systems of interest. Both techniques provide pathways to high-precision etched microchannels and capable lab-on-chip devices. Photolithography/wet-etching, however, enables fabrication of complex channel networks with complex geometries, which would be a challenging task for laser etching techniques. This work summarizes a step-by-step photolithography, wet-etching and glass thermal-bonding protocol and, presents representative observations of foam transport with relevance to oil recovery from unconventional tight and shale formations. In conclusion, this work describes the use of a high resolution monochromatic sensor to observe scCO 2 foam behavior where the entirety of the permeable medium is observed simultaneously while preserving the resolution needed to resolve features as small as 10 μm.
The correlation between N deficiency and the mechanical properties of the Ti 2 AlNy MAX phase
The role of X deficiency on the mechanical properties of MAX phases was studied by synthesizing Ti 2 AlN through powder metallurgy in stoichiometric and sub/extra-stoichiometric nitrogen compositions. XRD analyses and ab initio calculations indicate that nitrogen vacancies result in a lattice contraction predominantly along the c-axis. The elastic moduli and intrinsic hardness of substoichiometric Ti 2 AlN 0.9 measured from nanoindentation tests are shown to be slightly smaller than that of Ti 2 AlN. The key mechanical indexes, bulk (B), shear (G) and Young’s (E) moduli as well as the hardness variation are calculated in density functional theory, and show different responses depending on the concentration of N vacancies. Overall, this joint experimental and theoretical study provides a full understanding of the energetics, chemical bonding, electronic structure, and mechanics of the N deficient MAX phases which would increase the application of nitride ceramics.
