Polarization observables 𝑇 and 𝐹 in the π›Ύβ’π‘β†’πœ‹ 0 ⁒𝑝 reaction at CLAS

Pion photoproduction in the $\vec{Ξ³}$$\vec{p}$ β†’ Ο€ 0 p reaction has been measured in the FROzen Spin Target (FROST) experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. In this experiment, circularly polarized photons with energies up to 3.082 GeV impinged on a transversely polarized frozen-spin target. Final-state protons were detected in the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) Large Acceptance Spectrometer. The polarization observables T and F have been extracted for W from 1445 to 2525 MeV, of which the energy range is much broader, and the precision is better than the existing measurements in higher W ranges. The data generally agree with predictions of present partial-wave analyses but also show marked differences for higher W ranges. By incorporating the present data into the databases, the Scattering Analysis Interactive Data (SAID) fits have been improved with relatively small Ο‡ 2 and significant changes in the parameters of the (1910)1/2 + and N(2190)7/2 βˆ’ have been found with the JΓΌBo model.

Proton transparency and neutrino physics: New methods and modeling

Extracting accurate results from neutrino oscillation and cross section experiments requires accurate simulation of the neutrino-nucleus interaction. The rescattering of outgoing hadrons (final state interactions) by the rest of the nucleus is an important component of these interactions. We present a new measurement of proton transparency (defined as the fraction of outgoing protons that emerge without significant rescattering) using electron-nucleus scattering data recorded by the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory on helium, carbon, and iron targets. This analysis uses a new data-driven method to extract the transparency. It defines transparency as the ratio of electron-scattering events with a detected proton to quasi-elastic electron-scattering events where a proton should have been knocked out. Our results are consistent with previous measurements that determined the transparency from the ratio of measured events to theoretically predicted events. We find that the GENIE event generator, which is widely used by oscillation experiments to simulate neutrino-nucleus interactions, needs to better describe both the nuclear ground state and proton rescattering in order to reproduce our measured transparency ratios, especially at lower proton momenta.

Recoil polarization in 𝐾 + β’π‘Œ electroproduction in the nucleon resonance region with CLAS12

Hyperon recoil polarization measurements for the exclusive electroproduction of 𝐾 + ⁒Λ and 𝐾 + ⁒Σ 0 final states from an unpolarized proton target have been carried out using the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The measurements at beam energies of 6.535 and 7.546 GeV span the range of four-momentum transfer 𝑄 2 from 0.3 to 4.5GeV 2 and invariant mass π‘Š from 1.6 to 2.4 GeV, while covering the full center-of-mass angular range of the 𝐾 + . These new Ξ› polarization observables extend the existing data in a similar kinematic range but from a significantly larger dataset. However, they represent the first electroproduction measurements of this observable for the Ξ£ 0 . These data will allow for better exploration of the reaction mechanism in strangeness production, for further understanding of the spectrum and structure of excited nucleon states that couple to πΎβ’π‘Œ, and for improved insight into the strong interaction in the nonperturbative domain.

Suppression of neutral-pion production in deep-inelastic scattering off nuclei with the CLAS detector

We present the first threefold differential measurement for neutral-pion multiplicity ratios produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic electron scattering on carbon, iron, and lead nuclei normalized to deuterium from CLAS at Jefferson Lab. We found that the neutral-pion multiplicity ratio is maximally suppressed for the leading hadrons (energy fraction 𝑧 β†’ 1), suppression varying from 25% in carbon up to 75% in lead. An enhancement of the multiplicity ratio at low 𝑧 and high 𝑝$^2_𝑇$ is observed, suggesting an interconnection between these two variables. This behavior is qualitatively similar to the previous twofold differential measurement of charged pions by the HERMES Collaboration and, recently, by CLAS Collaboration. The largest enhancement was observed at high 𝑝$^2_𝑇$ for heavier nuclei, namely, iron and lead, while the smallest enhancement was observed for the lightest nucleus, carbon. This behavior suggests a competition between partonic multiple scattering, which causes enhancement, and hadronic inelastic scattering, which causes suppression.

Measurement of single- and double-polarization observables in the photoproduction of πœ‹ + β’πœ‹ βˆ’ meson pairs off the proton using CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory

The photoproduction of πœ‹ + β’πœ‹ βˆ’ meson pairs off the proton has been studied in the reaction π›Ύβ’π‘β†’π‘β’πœ‹ + β’πœ‹ βˆ’ using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and the frozen-spin target (FROST) in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time, the beam and target asymmetries, 𝐼 𝑠,𝑐 and 𝑃 π‘₯,𝑦 , have been measured along with the beam-target double-polarization observables, 𝑃$^{𝑠,𝑐}_{π‘₯,𝑦}$, using a transversely polarized target with center-of-mass energies ranging from 1.51 GeV up to 2.04 GeV. These data and additional πœ‹β’πœ‹ photoproduction observables from CLAS and experiments elsewhere were included in a partial-wave analysis within the Bonn-Gatchina framework. Significant contributions from 𝑠-channel resonance production are observed in addition to 𝑑-channel exchange processes. The data indicate significant contributions from 𝑁* and Ξ”* resonances in the third and fourth resonance regions.

First measurement of π‘Ž$^{0}_{2}$⁑(1320) polarized photoproduction cross section

We measure for the first time the differential photoproduction cross section dΟƒ/dt of the a 2 (1320) meson at an average photon beam energy of 8.5 GeV, using data with an integrated luminosity of 104 pb βˆ’1 collected by the GlueX experiment. We fully reconstruct the Ξ³p β†’ Ξ·Ο€ 0 p reaction and perform a partial-wave analysis in the a 2 (1320) mass region with amplitudes that incorporate the linear polarization of the beam. This allows us to separate for the first time the contributions of natural- and unnatural-parity exchanges. Furthermore, these measurements provide novel information about the photoproduction mechanism, which is critical for the search for spin-exotic states.

Upper Limit on the Photoproduction Cross Section of the Spin-Exotic $Ο€$ 1 (1600)

Here, the spin-exotic hybrid meson Ο€ 1 (1600) is predicted to have a large decay rate to the ωππ final state. Using 76.6 pb -1 of data collected with the GlueX detector, we measure the cross sections for the reactions Ξ³p β†’ ωπ + Ο€ - p, Ξ³p β†’ ωπ 0 Ο€ 0 p, and Ξ³p β†’ ωπ - Ο€ 0 Ξ” ++ in the range E Ξ³ = 8 - 10 GeV. Using isospin conservation, we set the first upper limits on the photoproduction cross sections of the Ο€$^0_1$(1600) and $Ο€^-_1$(1600). We combine these limits with lattice calculations of decay widths and find that photoproduction of Ξ·' Ο€ is the most sensitive two-body system to search for the Ο€ 1 (1600).
