The FBXW7-binding sites on FAM83D are potential targets for cancer therapy

Increasing evidence shows the oncogenic function of FAM83D in human cancer, but how FAM83D exerts its oncogenic function remains largely unclear. Here, we investigated the importance of FAM83D/FBXW7 interaction in breast cancer (BC). We systematically mapped the FBXW7-binding sites on FAM83D through a comprehensive mutational analysis together with co-immunoprecipitation assay. Mutations at the FBXW7-binding sites on FAM83D led to that FAM83D lost its capability to promote the ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation of FBXW7; cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in vitro; and tumor growth and metastasis in vivo, indicating that the FBXW7-binding sites on FAM83D are essential for its oncogenic functions. A meta-evaluation of FAM83D revealed that the prognostic impact of FAM83D was independent on molecular subtypes. The higher expression of FAM83D has poorer prognosis. Moreover, high expression of FAM83D confers resistance to chemotherapy in BCs, which is experimentally validated in vitro. We conclude that identification of FBXW7-binding sites on FAM83D not only reveals the importance for FAM83D oncogenic function, but also provides valuable insights for drug target.

Robust Model Predictive Control for Attack Mitigation of Virtual Synchronous Generators (VSGs) in an Islanded Microgrid

With the increasing application of power converters in distributed energy systems, power electronics converters face an increasing number of cyber-attacks. To mitigate the cyber-attack impact on voltage source converters (VSCs) and microgrids, a robust model predictive control (RMPC) is proposed for virtual synchronous generators (VSG) in an islanded microgrid. This RMPC is designed to compensate for the frequency deviations, thus maintaining frequency stability of the whole islanded microgrid against cyber threats. Finally, to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, comparisons between the proposed method and the conventional VSC controller are provided in different attack scenarios.

Data-Driven Cyber-Attack Detection for PV Farms via Time-Frequency Domain Features

The internetworking of grid-connected power electronics converters (PECs) in photovoltaic (PV) farms has inevitably expanded the cyber-attack surfaces. Here this paper presents a comprehensive study on cyber-attack detection and diagnosis for PEC-enabled PV farms via single waveform sensor to distinguish between normal conditions, open-circuit faults, short-circuit faults, and cyber-attacks. To our knowledge, this has not been attempted before. Firstly, we propose frequency-domain magnitude-based residuals to identify short-circuit faults and a time-domain mean current vector-based feature to distinguish open-circuit faults from other threats. These features can fully reflect the specific physical characteristics of PV farms during threat duration. Secondly, unlike micro phasor measurement units (µPMU) and raw electric waveform-based methods, the proposed innovative features can address novel cyber-attacks that are excluded from the training process. Thirdly, an online hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testbed using the OPAL-RT real-time digital simulator has verified the effectiveness. The monitoring system runs in real-time while using HIL as an operational solar farm and a National Instruments (NI) data acquisition card as the electric waveform sensor at the point of coupling.

Cyber-Attack Detection for Photovoltaic Farms Based on Power-Electronics-Enabled Harmonic State Space Modeling

Here in this paper, a physics-data-based detection method is proposed to detect a variety of cyber-attacks in Photovoltaic (PV) farms using the power electronics-enabled harmonic state space (HSS) models, which, to our knowledge, is original. At the device level, HSS-based detection is developed to monitor harmonic vectors of individual PV converter with minimum sensor measurements, thus improving accuracy and robustness compared to Kalman Filter-based detection. At the system level that involves multiple PV converters, a clustering approach is developed to investigate attack propagation and accurately locate attack sources within a PV farm. The proposed approach is one of the first attempts to address PV security through interaction between the device and system, maximizing the accuracy and robustness at different levels. To verify the feasibility, a comprehensive attacks model is built, including single attack, coordinated attacks, and replay attacks. Besides, the impacts of irradiance changes are taken into consideration in the test scenarios. With the real-time data acquisition and hardware-in-the-loop testbed, comprehensive test results are provided to verify the feasibility of the proposed detection methodology.

Model-based Cyber-attack Detection for Voltage Source Converters in Island Microgrids

With the upgrading of communication and control in microgrids, cyber threats on the power converters are increasing. Here, in this paper, a novel model-based cyber-attack detection methodology is proposed for each voltage source converter in microgrids. The Harmonics State Space Matrix (H-Matrix) is used to build the closed-loop transfer function, providing model-based estimation with the grid voltage and control reference. Then, the space phase model (SPM) is used to calculate residual to detect cyber-attacks in voltage source converter (VSC). As controller and converter parameters are included in the H-matrix, the proposed method also could detect cyber-attacks when voltage fluctuation occurs in the grid. To verify the feasibility of the proposed method, several attacks targeting VSC in an islanded microgrid are simulated in MATLAB. Simulation and detection results are introduced to demonstrate the resilience and feasibility of the proposed method.

A Review of Cyber-Physical Security for Photovoltaic Systems

In this paper, the challenges and a future vision of the cyber-physical security of photovoltaic (PV) systems are discussed from a firmware, network, PV converter controls, and grid security perspective. The vulnerabilities of PV systems are investigated under a variety of cyber-attacks, ranging from data integrity attacks to software-based attacks. A success rate metric is designed to evaluate the impact and facilitate decision making. Model-based and data-driven methods for threat detection and mitigation are summarized. In addition, the blockchain technology that addresses cyber-attacks in software and cyber networks is described. Simulation and experimental results that show the impact of cyber-attacks at the converter (device) and grid (system) levels are presented. Finally, potential research opportunities are discussed for next-generation, cyber-secure power electronics systems. These opportunities include multi-scale controllability, self-/event-triggering control, artificial intelligence/machine learning, hot patching, and online security. As of today, this study will be one of the few comprehensive studies in this emerging and fast-growing area.

Hardware-in-the-Loop Testbed for Cyber-Physical Security of Photovoltaic Farms

In the last decades, modem grids with distributed energy resources, such as photovoltaic (PV) farms, are increasingly vulnerable to cyber-attacks that seriously affect the stability and performance of the power system. While cyber-physical security of smart grids is extensively studied, most of the existing work focuses on the grid level and neglects the modeling and features of device-level power electronics converters (PECs). Furthermore, establishing a high-fidelity simulation testbed that can simulate harmonic frequencies of the PV farm is in urgent need. In this paper, a high-fidelity and real-time hardware-in- the-loop testbed is built to simulate the harmonics of power electronics converters for cyber-physical security of PEC-enabled PV farms. Based on this testbed, the impact of typical cyber-attacks and physical faults on the PV converter can be analyzed, thus providing a foundation for cyber-attack detection, root cause diagnosis, and resilient control to mitigate the adverse effects of cyber-attacks.

Cyber-physical security framework for Photovoltaic Farms

With the evolution of PV converters, a growing number of vulnerabilities in PV farms are exposing to cyber threats. To mitigate the influence of cyber-attack on PV farms, it is necessary to study attacks' impact and propose detection methods. To meet this requirement, a cyber-physical security framework is proposed for PV farms. Data integrity attacks (DIAs) are studied on different control loops. As μPMU is gaining in popularity, a lower sampling rate of μPMU data is applied to develop a detection algorithm. We have evaluated two data-driven methods, which are support vector machine (SVM) and long short-term memory (LSTM). Lastly, the data-driven methods verify the feasibility of μPMU data in attack detection.
