Highly stretchable organic electrochemical transistors with strain-resistant performance

Realizing fully stretchable electronic materials is central to advancing new types of mechanically agile and skin-integrable optoelectronic device technologies. Here we demonstrate a materials design concept combining an organic semiconductor film with a honeycomb porous structure with biaxially prestretched platform that enables high-performance organic electrochemical transistors with a charge transport stability over 30-140% tensional strain, limited only by metal contact fatigue. In this work, the prestretched honeycomb semiconductor channel of donor-acceptor polymer poly(2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-diketo-pyrrolopyrrole-alt-2,5-bis(3-triethyleneglycoloxy-thiophen-2-yl) exhibits high ion uptake and completely stable electrochemical and mechanical properties over 1,500 redox cycles with 10(4) stretching cycles under 30% strain. Invariant electrocardiogram recording cycles and synapse responses under varying strains, along with mechanical finite element analysis, underscore that the present stretchable organic electrochemical transistor design strategy is suitable for diverse applications requiring stable signal output under deformation with low power dissipation and mechanical robustness. Highly stretchable organic electrochemical transistors with stable charge transport under severe tensional strains are demonstrated using a honeycomb semiconducting polymer morphology, thereby enabling controllable signal output for diverse stretchable bioelectronic applications.

Design, synthesis and characterization of fused bithiazole- and dithiophene-based low bandgap thienylenevinylene copolymers

The structural rigidity of fused units in the polymer backbone, in addition to the resulting stabilizing effect of the quinoidal structure, and tunable electronic properties have played a key role in promoting highly-ordered π-stacking moieties, exhibiting promising charge carrier mobilities. The electron-deficient thiazole moiety shows high planarity and effective π–π stacking, which leads to the reduction in the energy levels of the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (HOMO/LUMO), and ideally enhances the electron charge mobility. Four heterocycle-based monomers BTzS, BTzSe, DTS, and DTG based on fused bithiazole and dithiophene units incorporated with sulfur, selenium, silicon, and germanium as the bridging atoms were synthesized and characterized. Here, the monomers were copolymerized with the electron-rich alkylated thienylenevinylene (TV) unit to afford copolymers P1–P4. The thermal, optical, and electrochemical properties and crystallinity of the copolymers were thoroughly investigated. Extensive OFET device optimization using different solvents and annealing temperatures resulted in the best charge mobility of 0.09 cm2 V –1 s –1 for the electron-deficient bithiazole BTzS copolymer P1 and 0.36 cm2 V –1 s –1 for the DTS copolymer P3.

Over 15% Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by Conformation Tuning of Newly Designed Asymmetric Small‐Molecule Acceptors

Abstract The prosperous period of polymer solar cells (PSCs) has witnessed great progress in molecule design methods to promote power conversion efficiency (PCE). Designing asymmetric structures has been proved effective in tuning energy level and morphology, which has drawn strong attention from the PSC community. Two hepta‐ring and octa‐ring asymmetric small molecular acceptors (SMAs) (IDTP‐4F and IDTTP‐4F) with S‐shape and C‐shape confirmations are developed to study the relationship between conformation shapes and PSC efficiencies. The similarity of absorption and energy levels between two SMAs makes the conformation a single variable. Additionally, three wide‐bandgap polymer donors (PM6, S1, and PM7) are chosen to prove the universality of the relationship between conformation and photovoltaic performance. Consequently, the champion PCE afforded by PM7: IDTP‐4F is as high as 15.2% while that of PM7: IDTTP‐4F is 13.8%. Moreover, the S‐shape IDTP‐4F performs obviously better than their IDTTP‐4F counterparts in PSCs regardless of the polymer donors, which confirms that S‐shape conformation performs better than the C‐shape one. This work provides an insight into how conformations of asymmetric SMAs affect PCEs, specific functions of utilizing different polymer donors to finely tune the active‐layer morphology and another possibility to reach an excellent PCE over 15%.
