Development of MHD for NekRS

A spectral-element-based formulation of incompressible MHD is presented in the context of the open-source fluid-thermal code, Nek5000/RS. The formulation supports magnetic fields in a solid domain that surrounds the fluid domain. Several steady-state and time-transient model problems are presented as part of the code verification process. Nek5000/RS is designed for large-scale turbulence simulations, which will be the next step with this new MHD capability.

Why it is Unfortunate that Linear Machine Learning “Works” so well in Electromechanical Switching of Ferroelectric Thin Films

Machine learning (ML) is relied on for materials spectroscopy. It is challenging to make ML models fail because statistical correlations can mimic the physics without causality. Here, using a benchmark band-excitation piezoresponse force microscopy polarization spectroscopy (BEPS) dataset the pitfalls of the so-called “better”, “faster”, and “less-biased” ML of electromechanical switching are demonstrated and overcome. Using a toy and real experimental dataset, it is demonstrated how linear nontemporal ML methods result in physically reasonable embedding (eigenvalues) while producing nonsensical eigenvectors and generated spectra, promoting misleading interpretations. A new method of unsupervised multimodal hyperspectral analysis of BEPS is demonstrated using long-short-term memory (LSTM) β-variational autoencoders (β-VAEs) . By including LSTM neurons, the ordinal nature of ferroelectric switching is considered. Further, to improve the interpretability of the latent space, a variational Kullback–Leibler-divergency regularization is imposed . Finally, regularization scheduling of β as a disentanglement metric is leveraged to reduce user bias. Combining these experiment-inspired modifications enables the automated detection of ferroelectric switching mechanisms, including a complex two-step, three-state one. Ultimately, this work provides a robust ML method for the rapid discovery of electromechanical switching mechanisms in ferroelectrics and is applicable to other multimodal hyperspectral materials spectroscopies.

Improving Thermal Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells by Suppressing Ion Migration Using Copolymer Grain Encapsulation

Thermal stability of organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) remains as one of the critical challenges against the stable operation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) in direct sunlight with elevated temperatures. Here, we show that the addition of a polystyrene-co-polyacrylonitrile (SAN) copolymer can significantly enhance thermal stability of OIHPs and improve the stability of the corresponding PSCs by suppressing the migration of organic cations in OHIP. The methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI) with SAN incorporated within the perovskite layer featured a superior thermal stability compared to pure MAPI without SAN, only displaying an average of 5–15% decrease in PCE even after continuous thermal aging for 24 h at 100 °C. The secondary ion mass spectrometry revealed that the thermal degradation of the pure MAPI was largely associated with MA+ out-migration. Conducting atomic force microscopy analysis further indicated that the incorporated SAN led to a suppression of ionic currents present at the grain boundaries of the perovskite film, which was understood by high immiscibility between SAN and MA+ components as confirmed by the experimentally estimated Flory–Huggins parameter between them. This study newly identifies a potential of using polymer grain encapsulation for enhancing thermal stability of OIHPs and their solar cell performance by suppressing the out-diffusion of cationic organic components.

Mutually Reinforced Polymer–Graphene Bilayer Membranes for Energy‐Efficient Acoustic Transduction

Abstract Graphene holds promise for thin, ultralightweight, and high‐performance nanoelectromechanical transducers. However, graphene‐only devices are limited in size due to fatigue and fracture of suspended graphene membranes. Here, a lightweight, flexible, transparent, and conductive bilayer composite of polyetherimide and single‐layer graphene is prepared and suspended on the centimeter scale with an unprecedentedly high aspect ratio of 10 5 . The coupling of the two components leads to mutual reinforcement and creates an ultrastrong membrane that supports 30 000 times its own weight. Upon electromechanical actuation, the membrane pushes a massive amount of air and generates high‐quality acoustic sound. The energy efficiency is ≈ 10–100 times better than state‐of‐the‐art electrodynamic speakers. The bilayer membrane's combined properties of electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, optical transparency, thermal stability, and chemical resistance will promote applications in electronics, mechanics, and optics.

Enhancing Chemical Stability and Suppressing Ion Migration in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Perovskite Solar Cells via Direct Backbone Attachment of Polyesters on Grain Boundaries

Organic–inorganic halide perovskites feature excellent optoelectronic properties but poor chemical stability. While passivating perovskite grain boundary (GB) by polymers shows prospects on long-term performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), its detailed impact on the ion migration phenomenon, which largely deteriorates the PSC stability, remains less probed. In this work, we introduce a new polar polymer, polycaprolactone (PCL), to passivate GBs of methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite with only 1–2 polymer monolayers via direct backbone attachment. The PSCs with passivated MAPbI 3 , using a classic but less stable Spiro-OMeTAD (2,2',7,7'-tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9'-spirobifluorene) hole transport layer (HTL), exhibit improved power conversion efficiencies up to 20.1%, with 90% of the initial PCE being preserved after 400 h ambient storage, and 80% even after 100 h, 85 °C aging. The improved PSC stability indicates critical roles of PCL GB passivation in retarding moisture-induced decomposition and suppressing ion migration within the perovskite. Furthermore, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry reveals that I– ions can actively migrate into the electrode, HTL, and their interface in nonpassivated PSCs, even without an externally applied electric field, while such migration is significantly mitigated in PCL-passivated PSCs. This effective GB passivation by PCL suggests an important potential of polymer additives toward the development of stable high-performance PSCs.

In-situ X-ray scattering study of isotactic polypropylene/graphene nanocomposites under shear during fused deposition modeling 3D printing

Complementary techniques were applied to characterize the structure property relationships of FDM printed isotactic polypropylene/graphene nanocomposites. Raman spectroscopy indicated that graphene was mostly exfoliated during the nozzle extrusion process. Rheological measurements of the viscosity indicated that the presence of graphene induced shear thinning during extrusion. Azimuthal scans of wide angle x-ray scattering indicate correlated thermal fluctuations of the graphene platelets which stops abruptly at the onset of transcrystallization, or templating of the iPP chains on the graphene. X-ray microbeam SAXS analysis show the formation of ‘shish-kebab’ structures at the core of the unfilled filaments, where the ‘kebab’ component vanishes at the fiber-fiber interface enabling interdiffusion. Weak lamellar structure, and a corresponding decrease in the storage modulus are observed with the addition of 5% graphene. The lamellar structure disappears entirely with the addition of 10% graphene, while the storage modulus is decreased by nearly 50%. Thermal imaging of heat flux dissipation across molded and printed samples shows no orientational effects in pure iPP despite differences in crystal structure. Thermal conductivity increases dramatically in the samples with 10% graphene, and strong orientational effects are observed where the thermal coefficients differ by 180% between samples printed parallel or perpendicular to the heat flux.
