Optical diodes

Research on metal-barrier-metal structures is reviewed. Topics discussed include: demonstration of antenna coupling and rectification characteristics with high resistance evaporated structures at a wavelength of 10 microns; application of these devices to coherent conversion of laser radiation and infrared and optical circuit elements; and comparison of the point-contact type of diode structure and the newly developed photolithographic structures.

Electronic tunneling currents at optical frequencies

Rectification characteristics of nonsuperconducting metal-barrier-metal junctions as deduced from electronic tunneling theory have been observed experimentally for optical frequency irradiation of the junction.

Faris, S. M.↗

Coupling characteristics of thin-film metal-oxide-metal diodes at 10.6 microns

Direct detection experiments have demonstrated the coherent coupling of 10.6 micrometer radiation into photolithographically fabricated metal-oxide-metal tunnel junctions. A CO2 laser beam mechanically chopped at 1 KHz was focused at a variable angle of incidence with a power density of about 10 W/sq cm at the diodes. Diodes in which the junction resistance was much greater than the lead resistance displayed angular characteristics dominated by coherent antenna coupling.

Harmonic mixing characteristics of metal-barrier-metal junctions as predicted by electron tunneling

The bias dependence of the nonlinear mixing characteristics of metal-barrier-metal junction currents is deduced assuming an electron tunneling model. The difference-frequency beat voltage at frequency omega sub 1 - (n x omega sub 2), when n is an integer and omega sub 1 and omega sub 2 are the assumed frequencies of two induced currents, is found to have n zeros as the diode bias is varied. Recent experimental observations have demonstrated such characteristics.

Birefringing arising from the reorientation of the polarizability anisotropy of molecules in collisionless gases

The refractive index change in a collisionless gas is evaluated from the Stark shifts of the rotational energy levels that arise from the polarizability anisotropy. For the limit of an extremely short-duration excitation, a multilevel coherent effect resulted in delayed refractive index bursts. Both stationary and transient responses of this birefringence to an optical field were considered for symmetric top molecules, with particular emphasis on the special case of linear molecules.

Ac electronic tunneling at optical frequencies

Rectification characteristics of non-superconducting metal-barrier-metal junctions deduced from electronic tunneling have been observed experimentally for optical frequency irradiation of the junction. The results provide verification of optical frequency Fermi level modulation and electronic tunneling current modulation.
