Role of a microbore capillary column in the development of a portable gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer

An approach to the development of a high-performance, field portable gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer is presented which is based on a combination of a short microbore capillary column and a miniaturized, light-weight focal plane mass spectrograph. Performance results of the short microbore column for the mixture separation of the major pollutants and data on time-resolved mass spectral measurements of overlapped gas chromatograph peaks are reported.

Development of a miniaturized gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer with a microbore capillary column and an array detector

A review is presented of the demonstration of a miniaturized focal plane mass spectrograph using a microbore capillary column with an array detector to measure multiple mass spectra from narrow and closely eluted gas chromatograph peaks. It is shown that the system possesses high sensitivity and a high speed of spectral mass measurements. The combination of the capillary column with the miniaturized mass spectrograph is uniquely suited for the development of a field-portable, high-performance system.

GC/MS Gas Separator Operates At Lower Temperatures

Experiments show palladium/silver tube used to separate hydrogen carrier gas from gases being analyzed in gas-chromatography/mass-spectrometry (GC/MS) system functions satisfactorily at temperatures as low as 70 to 100 degrees C. Less power consumed, and catalytic hydrogenation of compounds being analyzed diminished. Because separation efficiency high even at lower temperatures, gas load on vacuum pump of mass spectrometer kept low, permitting use of smaller pump. These features facilitate development of relatively small, lightweight, portable GC/MS system for such uses as measuring concentrations of pollutants in field.
