Beam dynamics driven design of powerful energy recovery linac for experiments

Powerful ERL for experiments (PERLE) is a novel energy recovery linac (ERL) test facility [1], designed to validate choices for a 50 GeV ERL foreseen in the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider and the Future Circular Collider and to host dedicated nuclear and particle physics experiments. Its main goal is to demonstrate the high current, continuous wave, multipass operation with superconducting cavities at 802 MHz. With very high beam power (10 MW), PERLE offers an opportunity for controllable study of every beam dynamic effect of interest in the next generation of ERLs and becomes a “stepping stone” between the present state-of-the-art 1 MW ERLs and the future 100 MW scale applications. Modeling of standing wave RF cavities for tracking through multi-pass energy recovery linac

Short bunches, high current and multiple linac pass are all characteristics of Energy Recovery Linacs (ERLs), which may result in collective effects. They in turn, may affect the beam, degrading its quality, or even yield to instabilities causing a beam loss. To study and mitigate these effects one needs a numerical simulation code, that can take into account both the collective effects, as well as, particular ERL features, such as a multi-turn design that does not reach a steady state or the multiple passages of the beam through Radio-Frequency (RF) cavities at different energies. CODAL [1], a code developed by SOLEIL in collaboration with IJCLab, enables such studies. It is a 6 dimensional (6D) tracking code applying 'kicks' based on the integration of the local Hamiltonian for each element of the lattice. It is also capable of simulating space charge, wakefields and coherent synchrotron radiation. However, to correctly take into account the ERL dynamics, an upgrade had to be made to include the effect of a standing wave RF cavity in 6D. In this paper, we will concentrate on the implementation and benchmarking (with DESY’s tracking code ASTRA [2]) of both the longitudinal and the transverse models (by J.B. Rosenzweig and L. Serafini [3]), which we use to carry out tracking of fully analytical 6D RF cavity.

Lattice design of 250 MeV version of PERLE

The PERLE (Powerful Energy Recovery LINAC for Experiment) collaboration is working on a high power energy recuperation linac facility with three acceleration (up to 500 MeV) and three deceleration passes through two cryomodules with an injection current of 20 mA. Here we present the lattice design of the first phase of this machine, which features a single cryo-module and demonstrates six-pass operation at a maximum energy of 250 MeV at a high current. This initial lattice design boasts a simpler structure with fewer elements, resulting in lower initial costs and faster construction and shorter commissioning time. Furthermore, all magnets and cryo-modules are designed to be compatible with both phases, keeping upgrade costs to a minimum.

CACTUS: A depleted monolithic active timing sensor using a CMOS radiation hard technology

The planned luminosity increase at the Large Hadron Collider in the coming years has triggered interest in the use of the particles' time of arrival as additional information in specialized detectors to mitigate the impact of pile-up. The required time resolution is of the order of tens of picoseconds, with a spatial granularity of the order of 1 mm. A time measurement at this precision level will also be of interest beyond the LHC and beyond high energy particle physics. We present in this paper the first developments towards a radiation hard Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (DMAPS), with high-resolution time measurement capability. The technology chosen is a standard high voltage CMOS process, in conjunction with a high resistivity detector material, which has already proven to efficiently detect particles in tracking applications after several hundred of Mrad of irradiation.
