Catalytic Upgrading of Pyrolysis Products for the Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The objective of this project is advance the state-of-technology for a catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) + hydrotreating (HT) process to produce sustainable aviation fuel and other biogenic products. Our approach focuses on performing integrated experiments using realistic biomass feedstocks and non-noble metal technical catalyst formulations. CFP is performed in an ex-situ configuration using a fluidized bed reactor without co-fed hydrogen. Research advancements over the past two years include establishing benchmark yield structures and compositional data for each step of the biomass-to-SAF process, demonstrating the ability to produce a cycloalkane-rich SAF product that meets key ASTM 4054 guidelines, generating benchmark characterization data for technical catalyst formulations with an emphasis on determining the unique composition and combustion properties of biogenic coke, and establishing bio-oil critical material attributes to mitigate the risk of plugging during down-stream hydroprocessing. Other impacts from this project include generation of broadly enabling scientific knowledge (12 publications/12 presentations since 2021), engagement with industry partners (Johnson Matthey, ExxonMobil, Phillips 66), and identification of a promising pathway to market that addresses emerging demands for biogenic refinery feedstocks.

Investigation of Cu Species in Dealuminated Beta Zeolite Studied by Operando Closed-Cell Gas Reaction STEM

Direct conversion of ethanol to C3+ olefins is an attractive pathway to produce sustainable aviation fuels [1]. We recently reported a copper-containing catalyst supported on dealuminated (DeAl) beta zeolite that is capable of catalyzing cascade ethanol to olefins reactions with high olefins selectivity (88% C3+ olefin selectivity at 100% ethanol conversion). However, one of the deactivation mechanisms of the catalyst is copper sintering [2]. It was found that copper agglomerates can be redispersed through a simple oxidative treatment. To better understand the kinetics and process conditions conducive to redispersion, we studied the atmosphere and temperature dependent Cu species in Cu/DeAl-Beta catalyst under conditions matching those of the working catalyst.

BETO 2021 Peer Review - Advanced Catalyst Synthesis and Characterization (ACSC) Project WBS 2.5.4.304; 303; 305

The Advanced Catalyst Synthesis and Characterization (ACSC) project, in close collaboration with the Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy (ChemCatBio) Consortium enabling projects, CatCost, and the Engineering of Catalyst Scale-Up project, (1) provides fundamental insight into working catalysts leading to actionable recommendations for all of the ChemCatBio catalysis projects, (2) addresses overarching catalysis challenges central to the ChemCatBio Consortium, and (3) adapts and applies new synthesis methodologies and in situ/operando characterization capabilities to meet the evolving needs of the catalysis projects. The outcome is a transition from empirical catalyst development to rational design through the prediction of materials with targeted properties based on advanced characterization combined with computational modeling, and the synthesis of next generation catalysts with predicted structures that yield demonstrated improvements in catalytic performance. In FY18, the ACSC helped to demonstrate the utility of the complete catalyst and process development cycle for dimethyl ether to high-octane gasoline over metal-modified zeolite catalysts for the Upgrading of C1 Building Blocks project, and in FY21 will leverage capabilities, expertise, and computational models established for this effort to target next-generation catalysts for ethanol to distillates for the Upgrading of C2 Intermediates project with enhanced performance in half the time.
