Capacity of the Generalized Pulse-Position Modulation Channel

We show the capacity of a generalized pulse-position modulation (PPM) channel, where the input vectors may be any set that allows a transitive group of coordinate permutations, is achieved by a uniform input distribution. We derive a simple expression in terms of the Kullback Leibler distance for the binary case, and the asymptote in the PPM order. We prove a sub-additivity result for the PPM channel and use it to show PPM capacity is monotonic in the order.

Coupled receiver-decoders for low rate turbo codes

We present a rate 1/31 turbo code that achieves a bit error rate of 10(sup -6) at Eb/No = -0.9 db. At this coding gain, insufficient energy per symbol is present for a conventional receiver to recover the carrier phase properly. We present a method to overcome this problem by coupling the receiver and decoder functions.

Constrained coding for the deep-space optical channel

We investigate methods of coding for a channel subject to a large dead-time constraint, i.e. a constraint on the minimum spacing between transmitted pulses, with the deep-space optical channel as the motivating example.

Constrained coding for the deep-spaced optical channel

In this paper, we demonstrate a class of low-complexity modulation codes satisfying the (d,k) constraint that offer throughput gains over M-PPM on the order of 10-15%, which translate into SNR gains of .4 - .6 dB.

Laboratory characterization of silicon avalanche photodiodes (APD) for pulse position modulation (PPM) detection

Two commercially available large area silicon avalanche photodiodes (APD) were characterized in the laboratory. Specifically, the response of the APD’s to a sequence of 8-bit pulse position modulated (256-PPM) laser pulses, with and without background noise, was recorded and stored for post analysis. Empirical probability distribution functions (pdf) were constructed from the signal and noise slot data and compared to pdf’s predicted by an analytical model based on Webb/Gaussian statistics. The limited pulse sequence was also used to generate bit-error rate (BER) versus signal photons per pulse values, albeit with large error bars. These BER measurements were also compared to results predicted using the Gaussian and Webb/Gaussian models for APD channel statistics. While the measurements qualitatively reflect features predicted by theory, significant quantitative deviations are displayed between the measurements and theory. The source of these discrepancies is not currently well understood, but it is surmised that inaccurate knowledge of detector parameters such as gain and noise equivalent temperature models may explain the discrepancies.

Capacity and capacity sensitivity of soft output optical channels

In this paper, we derive the capacity of pulse position modulation (PPM) on a general soft output, memoryless channel, and evaluate the capacity formula for a variety of optical channel models, including AWGN, webb (1), and Webb plus Gaussian distributions.

Capacity of PPM on APD-Detected Optical Channels

This report defines the fundamental parameters affecting the capacity of a soft-decision optical channel, and relates them to corresponding parameters for the well-understood AWGN channel.

New codes for the optical channel

We present new codes and modulation formats for the deep space optical channel. By taking maximum avdvantage of inherent physical constraints on the communications link, these codes and modulation formats substantially close the large gap between state of the art systems and the Shannon limit.

Capacity of Pulse-Position Modulation (PPM) on Gaussian and Webb Channels

This article computes the capacity of various idealized soft-decision channels modeling an optical channel using an avalanche photodiode detector (APD) and pulse-position modulation (PPM). The capacity of this optical channel depends in a complicated way on the physical parameters of the APD and the constraints imposed by the PPM orthogonal signaling set. This article attempts to identify and separate the effects of several fundamental parameters on the capacity of the APD-detected optical PPM channel. First, an overall signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) parameter is de ned such that the capacity as a function of a bit-normalized version of this SNR drops precipitously toward zero at quasi-brick-wall limits on bit SNR that are numerically the same as the well-understood brick-wall limits for the standard additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. A second parameter is used to quantify the effects on capacity of one unique facet of the optical PPM channel (as compared with the standard AWGN channel) that causes the noise variance to be higher in signal slots than in nonsignal slots. This nonuniform noise variance yields interesting capacity effects even when the channel model is AWGN. A third parameter is used to measure the effects on capacity of the difference between an AWGN model and a non-Gaussian model proposed by Webb (see reference in [2]) for approximating the statistics of the APD-detected optical channel. Finally, a fourth parameter is used to quantify the blending of a Webb model with a pure AWGN model to account for thermal noise. Numerical results show that the capacity of M-ary orthogonal signaling on the Webb channel exhibits the same brick-wall Shannon limit, (M ln 2)=(M 1), as on the AWGN channel ( 1:59 dB for large M). Results also compare the capacity obtained by hard- and soft-output channels and indicate that soft-output channels o er a 3-dB advantage.

Capacity of PPM on Gaussian and Webb Channels

This paper computes and compares the capacities of M-ary PPM on various idealized channels that approximate the optical communication channel: (1) the standard additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel;(2) a more general AWGN channel (AWGN2) allowing different variances in signal and noise slots;(3) a Webb-distributed channel (Webb2);(4) a Webb+Gaussian channel, modeling Gaussian thermal noise added to Webb-distributed channel outputs.

A Joint Viterbi Algorithm to Separate Cochannel FM Signals

This paper presents a method for separating cochannel FM signals. We show that the Viterbi algorithm, traditionally limited to estimation of digital quantities, can jointly track analog FM signals by quantizing the derivative of their instantaneous frequencies.

A Real-Time Testbed for Satellite and Terrestrial Communications Experimentation and Development

This paper describes a programmable DSP-based testbed that is employed in the development and evaluation of blind demodulation algorithms to be used in wireless satellite or terrestrial communications systems. The testbed employs a graphical user interface (GUI) to provide independent, real-time control of modulator, channel and demodulator parameters and also affords realtime observation of various diagnostic signals such as carrier, timing recovery and decoder metrics. This interactive flexibility enables an operator to tailor the testbed parameters and environment to investigate the performance of any arbitrary communications system and channel model. Furthermore, a variety of digital and analog interfaces allow the testbed to be used either as a stand-alone digital modulator or receiver, thereby extending its experimental utility from the laboratory to the field.
