An Update on the CCSDS Optical Communications Working Group Interoperability Standards

International space agencies around the world are working together in the Interagency Operation Advisory Group (IOAG) and the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) to develop interoperability standards for optical communications. The standards support optical communication systems for both Near Earth and Deep Space robotic and human-rated spacecraft. The standards generally address both free space links between spacecraft and free space links between spacecraft and ground. This paper will overview the history and structure of the CCSDS Optical Communications Working Group and provide an update on the set of optical communications standards being developed. The paper will address the ongoing work on High Photon Efficiency communications, High Data Rate communications, and Optical On/Off Keying communications. It will also cover the working being done within CCSDS on documenting atmospheric measurement techniques and link operations concepts.

Telecommand/Telemetry Ranging for Deep-Space Applications

Conventional two-way pseudonoise (PN) ranging relies on measuring the time delay between a PN signal transmitted to the spacecraft, and a corresponding synchronized PN signal transmitted from the spacecraft and received on the ground. Recently, we introduced a two-way ranging method ([1], [2], [3]) which eliminates the need for the downlink PN ranging signal. In this telemetry ranging scheme, the requisite timing measurements are obtained from a databearing downlink telemetry signal. In the present paper, we extend the telemetry ranging concept by also eliminating the uplink PN signal, which is replaced by a data-bearing telecommand signal. We describe the architecture and concept of such a system, and describe the fundamental limitations of tracking the timing of such uplink telecommand signals when tracking loops or demod-remod correlation techniques are employed. An end-to-end performance analysis shows that in typical scenarios, ranging performance comparable to conventional PN ranging is possible.

Telemetry Ranging - Concept Paper Summary

Background - Previous CCSDS meetings: Spring 2015: Telemetry ranging technique was described; Fall 2015: A comparison to GMSK (Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying) plus PN (Pseudo-random Noise) ranging was made. -How telemetry ranging works: The spacecraft tracks the phase of the uplink PN ranging signal; Receive-time of downlink telemetry frame provides timing information; No downlink ranging signal is used. - This presentation: Summarizes the telemetry ranging concept paper. - Purpose: The purpose of the concept paper is to propose that the RFM (Radio Frequency Multiplier) Working Group consider telemetry ranging for inclusion as a recommended method for two-way ranging in the 401.0-B Blue Book.

Method of Error Floor Mitigation in Low-Density Parity-Check Codes

A digital communication decoding method for low-density parity-check coded messages. The decoding method decodes the low-density parity-check coded messages within a bipartite graph having check nodes and variable nodes. Messages from check nodes are partially hard limited, so that every message which would otherwise have a magnitude at or above a certain level is re-assigned to a maximum magnitude.

Fading Losses on the LCRD Free-Space Optical Link Due to Channel Turbulence

The Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) will implement an optical communications link between a pair of Earth terminals via an Earth-orbiting satellite relay. Clear air turbulence over the communication paths will cause random fluctuations, or fading, in the received signal irradiance. In this paper we characterize losses due to fading caused by clear air turbulence. We illustrate the performance of a representative relay link, utilizing a channel interleaver and error-correction-code to mitigate fading, and provide a method to quickly determine the link performance.

Self-configurable radio receiver system and method for use with signals without prior knowledge of signal defining characteristics

A method, radio receiver, and system to autonomously receive and decode a plurality of signals having a variety of signal types without a priori knowledge of the defining characteristics of the signals is disclosed. The radio receiver is capable of receiving a signal of an unknown signal type and, by estimating one or more defining characteristics of the signal, determine the type of signal. The estimated defining characteristic(s) is/are utilized to enable the receiver to determine other defining characteristics. This in turn, enables the receiver, through multiple iterations, to make a maximum-likelihood (ML) estimate for each of the defining characteristics. After the type of signal is determined by its defining characteristics, the receiver selects an appropriate decoder from a plurality of decoders to decode the signal.

Coded Modulation in C and MATLAB

This software, written separately in C and MATLAB as stand-alone packages with equivalent functionality, implements encoders and decoders for a set of nine error-correcting codes and modulators and demodulators for five modulation types. The software can be used as a single program to simulate the performance of such coded modulation. The error-correcting codes implemented are the nine accumulate repeat-4 jagged accumulate (AR4JA) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, which have been approved for international standardization by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems, and which are scheduled to fly on a series of NASA missions in the Constellation Program. The software implements the encoder and decoder functions, and contains compressed versions of generator and parity-check matrices used in these operations.

Frame Synchronization Without Attached Sync Markers

A new frame synchronizer was presented. It eliminates the need to transmit attached sync markers (ASMs). In approximately 10 iterations, the decoder can distinguish between sync and non-sync states.
