Nonlinear diffusion in the solid phase
A Fourier series expansion method has been used to develop simple and relatively accurate solutions for nonlinear Fickian diffusion in the solid phase. For the fundamental harmonic, the first term in the Fourier expansion is qualitatively similar but quantitatively quite different from the conventional exponential function. In contrast, the Fourier coefficients of the higher order harmonics are combinations of fast-decay and slow-decay components. The simple analytical results agree well with numerical solutions for one sample calculation.
