Thermodynamic properties and enhancement of diamagnetism in nitrogen doped lutetium hydride synthesized at high pressure

Nitrogen doped lutetium hydride has drawn global attention in the pursuit of room-temperature superconductivity near ambient pressure and temperature. However, variable synthesis techniques and uncertainty surrounding nitrogen concentration have contributed to extensive debate within the scientific community about this material and its properties. We used a solid-state approach to synthesize nitrogen doped lutetium hydride at high pressure and temperature (HPT) and analyzed the residual starting materials to determine its nitrogen content. High temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry determined the formation enthalpy of LuH 1.96 N 0.02 (LHN) from LuH 2 and LuN to be −28.4 ± 11.4 kJ/mol. Magnetic measurements indicated diamagnetism which increased with nitrogen content. Ambient pressure conductivity measurements observed metallic behavior from 5 to 350 K, and the constant and parabolic magnetoresistance changed with increasing temperature. High pressure conductivity measurements revealed that LHN does not exhibit superconductivity up to 26.6 GPa. We compressed LHN in a diamond anvil cell to 13.7 GPa and measured the Raman signal at each step, with no evidence of any phase transition. Despite the absence of superconductivity, a color change from blue to purple to red was observed with increasing pressure. Thus, our findings confirm the thermodynamic stability of LHN, do not support superconductivity, and provide insights into the origins of its diamagnetism.

Exchange field enhanced upper critical field of the superconductivity in compressed antiferromagnetic EuTe2

Abstract Understanding the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism has been a longstanding challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report high pressure studies on the C -type antiferromagnetic semiconductor EuTe 2 up to 36.0 GPa. A structural transition from the I4/mcm to the C2/m space group is identified at ~16 GPa. Superconductivity is observed above ~5 GPa in both structures. In the low-pressure phase, magnetoresistance measurements reveal strong couplings between the local moments of Eu 2+ and the conduction electrons of Te 5 p orbits. The upper critical field of superconductivity is well above the Pauli limit. While EuTe 2 becomes nonmagnetic in the high-pressure phase and the upper critical field drops below the Pauli limit. Our results demonstrate that the high upper critical field of EuTe 2 in the low-pressure phase is due to the exchange field compensation effect of Eu 2+ and the superconductivity in both structures may arise in the framework of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory.

Data-driven computational prediction and experimental realization of exotic perovskite-related polar magnets

Rational design of technologically important exotic perovskites is hampered by the insufficient geometrical descriptors and costly and extremely high-pressure synthesis, while the big-data driven compositional identification and precise prediction entangles full understanding of the possible polymorphs and complicated multidimensional calculations of the chemical and thermodynamic parameter space. Here we present a rapid systematic data-mining-driven approach to design exotic perovskites in a high-throughput and discovery speed of the A 2 BB ’O 6 family as exemplified in A 3 TeO 6 . The magnetoelectric polar magnet Co 3 TeO 6 , which is theoretically recognized and experimentally realized at 5 GPa from the six possible polymorphs, undergoes two magnetic transitions at 24 and 58 K and exhibits helical spin structure accompanied by magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric coupling. We expect the applied approach will accelerate the systematic and rapid discovery of new exotic perovskites in a high-throughput manner and can be extended to arbitrary applications in other families.

Predicted polymorph manipulation in an exotic double perovskite oxide

Predicted polymorph manipulation offers a cutting-edge route to design function-oriented materials in an exotic double perovskite-related oxide A 2 BB'O 6 with small A-site cations. Herein, first-principles density functional theory calculations in light of the equation of state for solid, for the first time, was used to predict the Mg 3 TeO 6 (R$\bar{3}$) with combining macron])-to-perovskite (P2 1 /n) type phase transition in Mn 3 TeO 6 at around 5 GPa, regardless of the deployment of magnetic interactions. The high-pressure synthesis and synchrotron diffraction crystal structure analysis corroborated experimentally the polymorph variation in Mn 2 2+ Mn 2+ Te 6+ O 6 , which was accompanied by a 13 K increase in the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (37 K) in the high-pressure perovskite polymorph compared to that of the ambient-pressure R$\bar{3}$ phase (24 K). The magnetodielectric coupling remains up to 50 K with the maximum being around the magnetic ordering temperature in the perovskite Mn 3 TeO 6 . Thus, the predicted polymorph manipulation here offers the possibility of discovering accelerated materials by inverse design in exotic perovskite oxides.
