Beam Commissioning and Integrated Test of the PIP-II Injector Test Facility

The PIP-II Injector Test (PIP2IT) facility is a near-complete low energy portion of the Superconducting PIP-II linac driver. PIP2IT comprises the warm front end and the first two PIP-II superconducting cryomodules. PIP2IT is designed to accelerate a 2 mA H⁻ beam to an energy of 20 MeV. The facility serves as a testbed for a number of advanced technologies required to operate PIP-II and provides an opportunity to gain experience with commissioning of the superconducting linac, significantly reducing project technical risks. Some PIP2IT components are contributions from international partners, who also lend their expertise to the accelerator project. The project has been successfully commissioned with the beam in 2021, demonstrating the performance required for the LBNF/DUNE. In this paper, we describe the facility and its critical systems. We discuss our experience with the integrated testing and beam commissioning of PIP2IT, and present commissioning results. This important milestone ushers in a new era at Fermilab of proton beam delivery using superconducting radio-frequency accelerators.

Design, Manufacturing, Assembly, Testing, and Lessons Learned of the Prototype 650 MHz Couplers

Six 650 MHz high-power couplers will be integrated into the prototype High Beta 650 MHz (HB650) cryomodule for the PIP-II project at Fermilab. The design of the coupler is described, including design optimizations from the previous generation. This paper then describes the coupler life-cycle, including manufacturing, assembly, testing, conditioning and the lessons learned at each stage.

Processing and Test Result of 650 MHz 50 kW CW Prototype Couplers for PIP-II Project

For PIP-II project Fermilab is developing 650 MHz couplers to deliver up to 50 kW CW RF power to the superconducting low-beta (LB650) and high-beta (HB650) cavities. To meet project requirements two different designs of the couplers were proposed, one is conventional design with copper plated stainless steel walls. In second design (EM-shielded) a copper screen is used to shield stainless steel wall from electromagnetic field. For prototyping we built two couplers of each type and tested them at 50kW with full reflection at different reflection phases. In each test the assembly of two couplers were processed with DC bias up to +5 kV, starting with short pulses and ramping power up to 100 kW. Final run for 2 hours in CW mode at 50 kW to reach equilibrium temperature regime and qualify couplers. One pair of couplers was also processed without DC bias. Finally, all four couplers demonstrated full requirements and were qualified. Based on test results the conventional coupler with some modification was chosen as a baseline design. Modified version of coupler is now ordered for prototype of HB650 cryomodule. In paper we will discuss details of coupler processing and results

Longitudinal Emittance Measurements at PIP2IT

The PIP-II particle accelerator is a new upgrade to the Fermilab accelerator complex, featuring an 800-MeV H⁻ superconducting linear accelerator that will inject the beam into the present Fermilab Booster. A test accelerator known as PIP-II Injector Test (PIP2IT) has been built to validate the concept of the front-end of PIP-II. One of the paramount challenges of PIP2IT was to demonstrate a low longitudinal emittance at the end of the front end. Having a low longitudinal emittance is crucial in order to ensure the stability of the beam in the accelerator. We present a longitudinal emittance calculation at 14.3 MeV at the SSR1-8 cavity in the High Energy Transport line (HEBT). The signal is collected by a Fast Faraday Cup (FFC) at the end of HEBT and recorded by a high-bandwidth oscilloscope.

Test Results of the Prototype SSR1 Cryomodule for PIP-II at Fermilab

A prototype cryomodule containing eight Single Spoke Resonators type-1 (SSR1) operating at 325 MHz and four superconducting focusing lenses has been successfully assembled and cold tested in the framework of PIP-II project at Fermilab. The performance of cavities and focusing lenses along with test results of other cryomodule’s key parameters are presented in this contribution.
