Thermal Disorder‐Induced Strain and Carrier Localization Activate Reverse Halide Segregation

The reversal of halide ions is studied under various conditions. However, the underlying mechanism of heat-induced reversal remains unclear. This work finds that dynamic disorder-induced localization of self-trapped polarons and thermal disorder-induced strain (TDIS) can be co-acting drivers of reverse segregation. Localization of polarons results in an order of magnitude decrease in excess carrier density (polaron population), causing a reduced impact of the light-induced strain (LIS – responsible for segregation) on the perovskite framework. Meanwhile, exposing the lattice to TDIS exceeding the LIS can eliminate the photoexcitation-induced strain gradient, as thermal fluctuations of the lattice can mask the LIS strain. Under continuous 0.1 W cm -2 illumination (upon segregation), the strain disorder is estimated to be 0.14%, while at 80 °C under dark conditions, the strain is 0.23%. However, in situ heating of the segregated film to 80 °C under continuous illumination (upon reversal) increases the total strain disorder to 0.25%, where TDIS is likely to have a dominant contribution. Therefore, the contribution of entropy to the system's free energy is likely to dominate, respectively. Various temperature-dependent in situ measurements and simulations further support the results. These findings highlight the importance of strain homogenization for designing stable perovskites under real-world operating conditions.

Top Stack Optimization for Cu 2 BaSn(S, Se) 4 Photovoltaic Cell Leads to Improved Device Power Conversion Efficiency beyond 6%

Earth-abundant and air-stable Cu 2 BaSnS 4-x Se x (CBTSSe) and related thin-film absorbers are regarded as prospective options to meet the increasing demand for low-cost solar cell deployment. Devices based on vacuum-deposited CBTSSe absorbers have achieved record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.2 % based on a conventional device structure using CdS buffer and i-ZnO/ITO window layers, with open-circuit voltage (V OC ) posing the major bottleneck for improving solar cell performance. The current study demonstrates a >20 % improvement in V OC (from 0.62 V to 0.75 V) and corresponding enhancement in PCE (from 5.1 % to 6.2 % without anti-reflection coating; to 6.5 % with MgF 2 anti-reflection coating) for solution-deposited CBTSSe solar cells. This performance improvement is realized by introducing an alternative successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR)-deposited Zn 1-x Cd x S buffer combined with sputtered Zn 1-x Mg x O/Al-doped ZnO window/top contact layer, which offer lower electron affinities relative to the conventional CdS/i-ZnO/ITO stack and better matching with the low electron affinity of CBTSSe. A combined experimental (temperature- and light intensity-dependent V OC measurements) and device simulation (SCAPS-1D) evaluation points to the importance of addressing relative band offsets for both the buffer and window layers relative to the absorber in mitigating interfacial recombination and optimizing CBTSSe solar cell performance.

Emerging inorganic solar cell efficiency tables (version 2)

Abstract This paper presents the second version of the efficiency tables of materials considered as emerging inorganic absorbers for photovoltaic solar cell technologies. The materials collected in these tables are selected based on their progress in recent years, and their demonstrated potential as future photovoltaic absorbers. The first part of the paper consists of the guidelines for the inclusion of the different technologies in this paper, the verification means used by the authors, and recommendation for measurement best practices. The second part details the highest world-class certified solar cell efficiencies, and the highest non-certified cases (some independently confirmed). The third part highlights the new entries including the record efficiencies, as well as new materials included in this version of the tables. The final part is dedicated to review a specific aspect of materials research that the authors consider of high relevance for the scientific community. In this version of the efficiency tables, we are including an overview of the latest progress in quasi one-dimensional absorbers, such as antimony chalcogenides, for photovoltaic applications.

Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 solar cells with over 10% power conversion efficiency enabled by heterojunction heat treatment

Sulfide kesterite Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 provides an attractive low-cost, environmentally benign and stable photovoltaic material, yet the record power conversion efficiency for such solar cells has been stagnant at around 9% for years. Severe non-radiative recombination within the heterojunction region is a major cause limiting voltage output and overall performance. Here we report a certified 11% efficiency Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 solar cell with a high 730 mV open-circuit voltage using heat treatment to reduce heterojunction recombination. This heat treatment facilitates elemental inter-diffusion, directly inducing Cd atoms to occupy Zn or Cu lattice sites, and promotes Na accumulation accompanied by local Cu deficiency within the heterojunction region. Consequently, new phases are formed near the hetero-interface and more favourable conduction band alignment is obtained, contributing to reduced non-radiative recombination. Using this approach, we also demonstrate a certified centimetre-scale (1.11 cm2) 10% efficiency Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 photovoltaic device; the first kesterite cell (including selenium-containing) of standard centimetre-size to exceed 10%.
