UOTe: Kondo‐Interacting Topological Antiferromagnet in a Van der Waals Lattice

Since the initial discovery of 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials, significant effort has been made to incorporate the three properties of magnetism, band structure topology, and strong electron correlations—to leverage emergent quantum phenomena and expand their potential applications. However, the discovery of a single vdW material that intrinsically hosts all three ingredients has remained an outstanding challenge. Here, in this work, the discovery of a Kondo-interacting topological antiferromagnet is reported in the vdW 5f electron system UOTe. It has a high antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature of 150 K, with a unique AFM configuration that breaks the combined parity and time reversal (PT) symmetry in an even number of layers while maintaining zero net magnetic moment. This angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements reveal Dirac bands near the Fermi level, which combined with the theoretical calculations demonstrate UOTe as an AFM Dirac semimetal. Within the AFM order, the presence of the Kondo interaction is observed, as evidenced by the emergence of a 5ƒ flat band near the Fermi level below 100 K and hybridization between the Kondo band and the Dirac band. The density functional theory calculations in its bilayer form predict UOTe as a rare example of a fully-compensated AFM Chern insulator.

Lattice and magnetic structure in the van der Waals antiferromagnet VBr 3

Here, we report a comprehensive investigation of the lattice and magnetic structure in van der Waals antiferromagnet VBr 3 , characterized by a BiI 3 -type structure at room temperature. Neutron diffraction experiments were performed on both polycrystalline and single-crystalline VBr 3 samples, revealing clear magnetic Bragg peaks emerging below the Néel temperature of T N =26.5 K. These magnetic Bragg peaks can be indexed by k=(0, 0.5, 1) in hexagonal notation. Our refinement analysis suggests that the antiferromagnetic order in VBr 3 manifests as a zigzag structure. Moreover, we observed peak splitting for nuclear Bragg peaks in the HK plane below the structure transition temperature of T S =90.4 K, indicating the breaking of threefold symmetry within the ab plane.

Superconductivity in pressurized trilayer La 4 Ni 3 O 10-$δ$ single crystals

In this study, the pursuit of discovering new high-temperature superconductors that diverge from the copper-based model has profound implications for explaining mechanisms behind superconductivity and may also enable new applications. Here our investigation shows that the application of pressure effectively suppresses the spin–charge order in trilayer nickelate La 4 Ni 3 O 10-δ single crystals, leading to the emergence of superconductivity with a maximum critical temperature (T c ) of around 30 K at 69.0 GPa. The d.c. susceptibility measurements confirm a substantial diamagnetic response below T c , indicating the presence of bulk superconductivity with a volume fraction exceeding 80%. In the normal state, we observe a strange metal behaviour, characterized by a linear temperature-dependent resistance extending up to 300 K. Furthermore, the layer-dependent superconductivity observed hints at a unique interlayer coupling mechanism specific to nickelates, setting them apart from cuprates in this regard. Our findings provide crucial insights into the fundamental mechanisms underpinning superconductivity, while also introducing a new material platform to explore the intricate interplay between the spin–charge order, flat band structures, interlayer coupling, strange metal behaviour and high-temperature superconductivity.

Noncoplanar magnetic order in the breathing kagome lattice compound Pb⁡(OF)⁢Cu 3 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 2⁢ (NO 3 )

We report a comprehensive study investigating the magnetic ordering properties of the quasi-two-dimensional breathing kagome lattice compound Pb⁡(OF)⁢Cu 3 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 2 ⁢(NO 3 ) using neutron diffraction and thermodynamic measurements. A long-range magnetic order emerges below the Néel temperature, T N = 18K, characterized by a propagating vector k = (0,0,1.5). Refinement analysis reveals that the copper moments display a noncoplanar arrangement, with the c components parallelly aligned within the breathing kagome plane and antiparallelly aligned between the layers. In-plane moment components form a chiral “tail-chase” structure. The magnetic order is quickly suppressed under moderate external fields applied both within and perpendicular to the kagome plane. Potential magnetic interactions that may be associated with the noncoplanar chiral magnetic structure are discussed.

Machine-learning-assisted automation of single-crystal neutron diffraction

Neutron scattering is a powerful but expensive technique to study materials and discover new matter. Advanced detector technology has significantly improved the efficiency of neutron experiments, increasing the complexity of neutron data reduction and analysis. Machine learning (ML) brings new directions for neutron diffraction data reduction and experiment operation. Here, this work presents an ML-assisted data reduction and analysis method for precise recognition of Bragg peaks and the corresponding regions of interest; it can then automatically screen and align a measured crystal using the recognized peaks, and subsequently plan and optimize the data collection with user-provided information and uncertainty quantification values of detected peaks. This method shows robust performance in different complex sample environments and enables automated single-crystal neutron diffraction.

Pressure-induced charge orders and their postulated coupling to magnetism in hexagonal multiferroic LuFe 2 O 4

Hexagonal LuFe 2 O 4 is a promising charge order (CO) driven multiferroic material with high charge and spin-ordering temperatures. The coexisting charge and spin orders on Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ sites result in magnetoelectric behaviors, but the coupling mechanism between the charge and spin orders remains elusive. Here, by tuning external pressure, we reveal three charge-ordered phases with suggested correlation to magnetic orders in LuFe 2 O 4 : (i) a centrosymmetric incommensurate three-dimensional CO with ferrimagnetism, (ii) a non-centrosymmetric incommensurate quasi-two-dimensional CO with ferrimagnetism, and (iii) a centrosymmetric commensurate CO with antiferromagnetism. Experimental in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements combined with density functional theory calculations suggest that the charge density redistribution caused by pressure-induced compression in the frustrated double-layer [Fe 2 O 4 ] cluster is responsible for the correlated spin-charge phase transitions. The pressure-enhanced effective Coulomb interactions among Fe-Fe bonds drive the frustrated (1/3, 1/3) CO to a less frustrated (1/4, 1/4) CO, which induces the ferrimagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition. Our results not only elucidate the coupling mechanism among charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in LuFe 2 O 4 , but also provide a new way to tune the spin-charge orders in a highly controlled manner.

Magnetic Order and Its Interplay with Structure Phase Transition in van der Waals Ferromagnet VI 3

We show that Van der Waals magnet VI 3 demonstrates intriguing magnetic properties that render it great for use in various applications. However, its microscopic magnetic structure has not been determined yet. Here, we report neutron diffraction and susceptibility measurements in VI 3 that revealed a ferromagnetic order with the moment direction tilted from the c-axis by ~36° at 4 K. A spin reorientation accompanied by a structure distortion within the honeycomb plane is observed, before the magnetic order completely disappears at $T_C$ = 50 K. The refined magnetic moment of ~1.3$μ_B$ at 4 K is much lower than the fully ordered spin moment of 2$μ_B$/V 3+ , suggesting the presence of a considerable orbital moment antiparallel to the spin moment and strong spin–orbit coupling in VI 3 . This results in strong magnetoelastic interactions that make the magnetic properties of VI 3 easily tunable via strain and pressure.
