Regulated high efficiency, lightweight capacitor-diode multiplier dc to dc converter

A voltage multiplier having a capacitor-diode voltage multiplying network is disclosed which is fed with voltage pulses from a dc source through a first switching means. Pulses of a second polarity are also supplied through a second switching means to the input of the capacitor-diode voltage multiplier from a second dc source whose voltage is adjustable to change the voltage of the pulses of second polarity. The switching means are alternately rendered conducting by signals from a control circuit. The second dc source may be controlled by a voltage comparator which compares the output voltage of the capacitor-diode voltage multiplier to the reference source.

A 30-cm mercury ion thruster performance with a 1 kW capacitor-diode voltage multiplier beam supply

A 1 kW solar array and capacitor-diode voltage multiplier converter (S/A-CDVM) was successfully integrated with a 30 cm diameter mercury ion thruster system to provide ion beam power. Measurements were made to compare steady state and transient response performance of a conventional bridge converter with the S/A-CDVM converter used for the ion beam supply. The ability to recover from screen to accelerator arcs and promptly re-establish stable thruster performance was demonstrated. Solar array transient response to thruster arcing was measured.

DC-to-DC conversion with voltage multipliers

Compact device uses transformerless capacitor/diode voltage multiplier. Advantages include efficiency at high power levels, increased reliability due to elimination of magnetics and associated electrical transients, no magnetic shielding requirement, and adaptability to modular or integrated circuit systems.

Efficiency and weight of voltage multiplier type ultra lightweight d.c.-d.c. converters

This paper presents an analytical and experimental study of a capacitor-diode voltage multiplier without a transformer which offers the possibility of high efficiency with light weight. Dc-dc conversion efficiencies of about 94% were achieved at output powers of 150 watts at 1000 volts using 8x multiplication. A detailed identification of losses was made, including forward drop losses in component, switching losses, reverse junction capacitance charging losses, and charging losses in the main ladder capacitors.

High performance dc-dc conversion with voltage multipliers

An experimental 100W 1000V dc-dc converter using a capacitor diode voltage multipler (CDVM) with a nominal frequency of 100 kHz is studied. A component weight of about 1 kg/kW was obtained. Design equations for current, output -ripple and -power, efficiency and output voltage are derived. Agreement between experimental results and calculations is fairly good except for ripple.

Method for measuring static Young's modulus of tungsten to 1900 K

An instrument system was developed and tested to measure static Young's modulus of elasticity of refractory metals in tension at temperatures to 1900 K. The extensometer uses capacitance displacement sensors for measuring total elongation of a specimen and incorporates a unique high-resolution remote zero-adjusting mechanism. Details of a method for calibrating capacitance displacement sensors at temperatures to 800 K are included. The system was built to adapt to a vacuum furnace on a tensile machine and was tested on unalloyed tungsten rod specimens. The test results show that the system can measure the modulus of tungsten to 1900 K to within a precision of + or - 5 percent. The uncertainty of the measurement is estimated to be of the same order as the precision.
