Analytical and experimental investigation of a 1/8-scale dynamic model of the shuttle orbiter. Volume 3B: Supporting data

The NASA Structural Analysis System (NASTRAN) Model 1 finite element idealization, input data, and detailed analytical results are presented. The data presented include: substructuring analysis for normal modes, plots of member data, plots of symmetric free-free modes, plots of antisymmetric free-free modes, analysis of the wing, analysis of the cargo doors, analysis of the payload, and analysis of the orbiter.

Analytical and experimental investigation of a 1/8-scale dynamic model of the shuttle orbiter. Volume 1: Summary report

A 1/8-scale structural dynamics model of the space shuttle orbiter was analyzed using the NASA Structural Analysis System (NASTRAN). Comparison of the calculated eigenvalues with preliminary test data for the unrestrained condition indicate that the analytical model was consistently stiffer, being about 20% higher in the first mode. The eigenvectors show reasonably good agreement with test data. A series of analytical and experimental investigations undertaken to resolve the discrepancy are described. Modifications in the NASTRAN model based upon these investigations resulted in close agreement for both eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Closed-pore Insulation Thermal Protection System Design Concept Development

The development of a unique closed-pore ceramic foam insulation (CPI) produced from low cost fly ash cenospheres is reported for space shuttle external thermal protection. Two basic design approaches were developed: bonded and mechanically fastened. A description of the concepts is presented in addition to fabrication and test results.
