Geospatial Capabilities to Couple Hazard and Social Vulnerability Data in Water Distribution Criticality Analysis

A resilience analysis of a water distribution system is greatly enhanced by the integration of up-to-date geospatial data describing the water system, hazards, and surrounding community. The Water Network Tool for Resilience (WNTR), an open-source Python package designed to simulate and analyze the resilience of water distribution systems, was recently updated to incorporate geographic information system (GIS) data into the resilience analysis. This paper describes the GIS capabilities and includes a case study using the drinking water distribution system model for a large city in Pennsylvania. The case study focuses on potential pipe damage from landslides and on pipes that are particularly difficult to repair. The analysis couples data on hazards, social vulnerability, and the location of emergency services to identify and prioritize high-impact critical infrastructure for mitigation. Results demonstrate that pipes can be prioritized for mitigation based on water shortage and vulnerable populations that are affected. In conclusion, the methods can be adopted for general use and are available as part of the WNTR software.

Leveraging PMU for Protection and Control

This presentation discusses the application of synchronized measurement in transmission system protection. The proposed wide area system protection (WASP) scheme uses PMU data to perform zonal current differential protection for the whole transmission system with high IBR penetration. This novel protection concept uses synchronized measurement, which is one of the key tasks proposed in the award DE-EE0010655.

SANSMIC v.1.0

SAND2024-01036O The updated Sandia Solution Mining Code (SANSMIC) modeling software models the dissolution of underground salt cavern walls due to raw-water injection (leaching), assuming an oil blanket. A previous version of this software modeled the impacts of leaching at the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and has been used in research for several decades, but the source code was not available. The new version will enhance current research as additional subsurface storage of energy in solution-mined caverns increases. It will also allow research reproducibility by making the software available to the wider research community. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

Annual Report of Available Drawdowns for Each Oil Storage Cavern in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve

DOE maintains an up-to-date documentation of the number of available full drawdowns of each of the caverns at the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). This information is important for assessing the SPR’s ability to deliver oil to domestic oil companies expeditiously if national or world events dictate a rapid sale and deployment of the oil reserves. This report is the latest in a series of annual reports, and it includes the baseline available drawdowns for each cavern.
